DC needs more Harley's and less every damn thing else. Marvel right now is just sticking their hand out screaming " HEY YOU GUYS, WE GOT BOOKS!"

Even if half the books get canned or more, at least i got to read some weird fun stuff every once in awhile. DC said they had some ongoings that were going to be starting with that Future's End 3d tie-in 99 cent cheeseburger that's entirely not rat meat, i'm hoping there will be some standouts that are worth picking up on their own merits and not because of hype reasons.

I really love Marvel's "All-New" iniative where they give their books a fresh take. I completely ignored the X-Men line for decades until I heard the pitch the original X-Men time travel to the present and have Back to The future antics. Never read a Ghost Rider comic in my life but a Fast & Furious reboot sounds enticing I'm so there.

Some ideas will fail but I appreciate these fresh takes. It's why I actually think the 90s was a good time for comics. The 00s for the most part was this really weird conservative regression to Silver Age concepts and characters.

I think my problem with it was that I followed the story, happily, for the first 60 issues when it was coming out, but then I just caught onto this repetitious pattern of false drama created by the 'anybody and everybody will die' shit that Kirkman built into the heart of the story. That and Kirkman's writing on it is just the flattest fucking thing. I feel like the surge and sales in the comics comes from mostly non-comic readers who got exposure through the game, which is a better story than any of the comic issues, and the show.

Those first 60 issues though...that was one of my favorite books at the time much like Fables. Invincible escaped the lull for me though, even if the Kirkman style is flat, the book is just more likable and energetic than Walking Dead now. King Carl needs to run the show.

Marvel has to respond to this

Holding the line at $4.99 initiative is GO

"When you look at the video game industry, lower-priced games are often seen as 'lesser' or 'cheaply-made', Alonso said, "we don't want to get potential readers or our current fanbase that impression. We have the best writers, artists, colorists, letterers, and editors in the business. That's why we're raising all our prices to $4.99 starting immediately. Fans will know when they see that price tag, much like a pair of Jordans, its a seal of quality."

there needs to be a death row reference somewhere

You don't think videogame heads who hadn't heard of it flocked to grab the comic based on such a good game? Numbers-wise, the show has way fucking more exposure, but that game made rounds, man.

I just think by sheer numbers of people watching the show it has beaten out the game. People see the show weekly and see the trades up at the front of bookstores. Businesses are trying to sell the trades to people looking for more after the show. I agree the game is fantastic and much better than the show. But the tv show gets talked about around the water cooler each week. Its insane how many people follow the show.

Walking Dead comics have been around for over a decade. As mentioned it started to decline before the show even started. It's one of the few things where I read the comic long before the TV show.

The show, and I suppose the game, have been huge. Walking Dead is probably the biggest example of where the show is helping comic sales. I betcha most of the current WD comic and trade sales are from new fans of the show, and not from the fans who were buying the comics before the show.

I think the book still has its ups and downs. I'm still reading it, but I can't wait for the current story arc to be over. Invincible is clearly the superior Kirkman book.

Okay, I'm going to put this out there, and it'll be a popular opinion: any medium has to be profitable to attract quality writers and artists. The margins on physical copies are getting less and less, so it makes sense for prices to go up. I'm okay with that.

Having said that, the margins on digital copies are insane. I would be happy if there was a dollar discount online to entice buyers, but the stores would be up in arms.

Right now i'm going to assume you think that quote was real and frown because it's believable.

April solicits were fulllllllllllll of 4.99 and 5.99 books, but with extra pages. Which is how 3.99 prices came to be Xo.

GAF, I need some advice. I've been out of comics for the last few months and I'm playing catch up.

Here's what I'm currently interested in pulling every month:
Black Science
Daredevil
Hawkeye
Invincible
Lazarus
The Punisher
Rat Queens
Saga
Sex Criminals

Here are a few I'm interested in but not 100% sold:
Captain America
Chew
Dead Body Road
The Manhattan Project
Ms. Marvel
The Planetoid

I'm not too interested in DC, but am I missing anything significant? Anything I should drop from the first list? Anything I should move up from the second? I don't want to pull more than 8-10 titles a month.

The Punisher and Daredevil are my favorite Marvel characters, so they're pretty much a lock. Saga, too. Everything else is flexible.

Cap is the no contest stand out of your maybe list

Cool. I left off at issue ~9, so I'll have to catch up. I was absolutely loving the Dimension Z stuff. I'll probably swap that out for Invincible, since I have a huge backlog there (practically the entire series sitting on Comixology unread, oh boy).

Are any of those lackluster or stinkers I can just ignore?

Your list is good, I would buy Chew as it is fantastic and even though its dc pick up Harley Quinn and maybe try Tomasi's Batman and Robin series. Lots of us here love it, but it really depends on how you feel about Batman/Damien.

Maybe give American Vampire a go.

Ms Marvels first issue is fun.

Wait for the trade of Dead Body Road. I feel that is going to read well as a trade plus it's only 6 issues altogether

Edit: ah misread, you said a few months. You prob read most of these. Still...I tried :(

Check out Zero by Ales Kot. I reckon you'll like it based on what you pull and each issue is a different artist, so your list will never feel stale!

Pssshht, I WISH three people here gave a shit about my favourite series.

Glad so many dig on my #2 though! War Rat Queens <3 <3 <3

Is your favourite series Rachel Rising?

Chew and The Manhattan Project are crazy awesome and are must reads. Ms. Marvel's first issue was ok.

I quit Batman and DC when they started the origin story. I'm sure it ended up being grea, just not for me. I have the first Chew TPB and it's really good. I'm not positive what I'd swap it out for. Thanks for the other suggestions...Ms. Marvel is something I'll keep an eye on.

Based on what you like and what others here who read similar stuff like, you'd probably do well to pick up Deadly Class.

I love Remender. How many books does he put out a month? I wasn't even aware of this one. Uncanny X-Force for life!

Check out Zero by Ales Kot. I reckon you'll like it based on what you pull and each issue is a different artist, so your list will never feel stale!

I'll check it out, thanks.

Read Deadly Class #1, this seems like it's going to be pretty rad. Its got that trademark Remender kinda too try-hard but also kinda endearing edginess to it. Will pick up the second issue.

Also hey Maq, check ya PM inbox.

As much as I enjoyed the first issue, I think it lingered a little too long in some places. But the second issue is great.

Chew is the best book currently being published sooooo yeah go buy it.

Kipp

but I am taking tiny steps forward
Has anyone read Concrete by Paul Chadwick? Just heard of it and it seems pretty good. Is it worth picking up?

Also, I'm about 2/3rds through Life and Times of Martha Washington right now and really loving it.
Dark Horse put this collection together with a lot of care, too. Before and sometimes after every separate miniseries, there's always a few paragraphs by either Gibbons or Miller providing a really interesting insight into the creation of the miniseries or the context.

Wow, Aquaman was great. Who knew a super hero going to his high school reunion would be so entertaining.

I might check that now

Thanks GAF for the Batman-related help last thread. Ordered some stuff regarding it, as well as a few Sandman volumes. :D

Castaway in Dimension Z Volumes 1 and 2

Cool, thanks!

Does anyone know what instocktrades usually has for a discount on marvel and DC? Is it usually lower than they are right now? I'd like to wait until next month to buy some stuff but I might just grab it now depending on how much of a price difference there is.

That's something I've not heard talk of in some time, Concrete was a great book. I would imagine it's still worth reading as the core story is pretty timeless, as well as nicely drawn.

I love MP, reading it in trades myself. That's the problem with Image for me, their books are so good that I know they'll be shelf-worthy early on so I jump off to trade. Doing it with Saga, MP, Lazarus, Black Science, Deadly Class, East of West... I just rely on you guys to steer me to the good stuff.

How do you read Hawkeye monthly? I am up to date and I only seem to get issues once every 2-3 months

Man you can tell some of you whippersnappers are new to comics. Hawkeye's delays used to be fairly normal for the industry for good books, it's only in the past few years they've spoiled us with double shipping and last minute fill in artists. Books come out when they come out, don't pretend your memory is so addled you can't keep track of this stuff :p

There's a Cartoon Network crossover event from IDW coming out which I'll probably end up buying. There'll also be a series of one shots of Cow and Chicken and other Cartoon network shows not yet published.

"I just ate a whoooooooole bottle of valium!"

Also what the hell happened to that second Black Beetle series? C'mon Francavilla. I know you're a busy guy but I needs it.

Mannnnn... This is one of my most anticipated books coming out! Francavilla is one of my favs,, I've bought books just because of his covers lol. Last I heard It was suppose to be releasing in JUNE?!

Speaking of Francavilla, anybody think Afterlife with Archie will get hardcovers?

I would forsure double dip, I'm sure that'd be a beautiful HC. I love the single issues,, Great paper, some of the best covers I've seen imo. I've bought almost all of the Afterlife Francavilla covers (1st&2nd printings)
