is it me or was James Chen REALLY bad this weekend?

he was only good at the royal rumble exhibition.
but on tournament weekend, all of his commentary flaws were quite noticeable.
capcom really needs to find another commentator to switch up their default choice of ultradavid, james chen and skisonic.

no more awful than usual. LMAO @ that long-ass pause when he forgot what a "round" was

"and that's gonna be enough to take...

*a minute passes*

*a hour passes*

*many suns set in the west*

*species are born into creation, scared and crying in the sun. Over time, the specifies grows and evolves, changing into forms unrecognizable from its initial inception. Eventually, the species dies out, giving way to the new in the ever-lasting circle of life*

"...the round"

I agree with this. He was shining Friday night.

James Chen was fine today. AND LOL at Art's stream right now.

I feel like James Chen did fine this weekend, and no different from past majors. I don't know what's with people picking him apart lately here and on r/kappa.

There were 87k viewers today and Chen's style of commentary is perfect for people who know jack shit about SF. The elaborations can be excessive for the rest of us but I find that he paints a good picture of the game to the viewers. Have some perspective.

I think this is the year EVO gets to 200K on Sunday.

Edit: James Chen wasn't that bad today, and I'm surprised you're complaining about him when the commentary for MKX was terrible. Whomever was commentating with UltraDavid during MKX constantly dropped sentences, didn't follow up on UltraDavid's comments, and didn't provide much insights for MKX. He also couldn't get people interested in Tanya mirrors, or didn't even try.

Say what you will about James Chen, at least the guy is passionate about commentating and tries his best.

He's not any better at that than other commentators. Ultrachen for USF4 isn't superior to UltraGodspeed for MKX.

Also, the issue isn't about wanting a Yipes style commentator over what he's providing. It's that his explanations aren't always appropriate. More than in game explanations, he tries to conjure player stories that are just broad assumptions on his part. X player hates this because this happened two weeks ago. It almost sounds like gossip.

Ski and David aren't right 100 percent of the time, but they don't take these leaps like James does.

Don't know what you're talking about, James was usual James today

overly longwinded and at times inaccurate but occasionally being okay but mostly not

Jchensor is like the bridge to get the non FGC audience understanding the game. You guys are just gonna have to deal with it and stop shitting on a guy that travels all over the country to help the scene.

I used to think that but tbh I'm not even sure he's the best bridge anymore.

He's not as bad as Ski tho

I don't follow sf4 much outside of watching majors sometimes, but Rog was great. Very smart player but the looks of it. Kind of arrogant too. And what's up with his hair? balding?
The matches overall were pretty incredible, maybe even better than seam (I have bad memory)

Rog used to be around all the time, but then he "retired"/got a job so we haven't seen him much. He's still great tho, as we saw.

No one is at the level of ski.
I like Chen, dunno why but I do.

I mean the new ski as in people hating on him just to hate on him. I actually think Ski is absolutely fine as a commentator as well. The Ski hate is a meme at this point.

James Chen is fine, he's just a poor hype man that still tries to get hype more often than he should

To be honest DMS is the only mute-worthy awful commentator that's been on the mic for a major lately, in general everyone is way better than they used to be, even Ski.

ski and chen have similar flaws but i honestly think ski has been the better commentator lately because he actually watches streams and keeps himself updated with tournament results.

I think I figured out why I'm not the biggest fan of James Chen' commentating. He takes too much time to get his thoughts across, during which a whole lot of stuff could have happened. All the while he continues to talk and drowns out the other commentator, usually UltraDavid. I actually don't mind listening to James run solo on commentary and he can hold it pretty well. When he's part of a pair though, I just get the feeling like they're both in contention for who gets to speak
