I like a lot of the ideas that go into Star Trek V and I like Kirk playing the cynical guy among everyone else who's marveled by the idea of meeting their maker.

Um, excuse me?

Kirk straight up questioning "God" is fucking great. Trek V (along with the first movie and Generations) would have made excellent TV show episodes

Concept of the movie was great. There was so much junk (useless Klingon antagonist, Sybok, the whole neutral zone planet elements, smaller budget than normal, general incompetence etc) that got in the way though.

The core of the movie was exploring somewhere no-one thought possible. Capping that with camping trips with "family" in Yellowstone was perfect. It's the Trek movie that probably should have been one of the best, and it completely fell apart. The Alpha Protocol of ST, so to speak.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
Really happy with the amazing rottentomato score, but I'm going to need it to drop 4% down to 89%.

Can't have this beating Civil War for best live action film of 2016.

Just read some of the first german reviews here. They sound exceptionally good without falling into hype. I'm so stoked.

I count a bunch of live action movies with higher scores than Civil War. So that war has already been lost.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
You guys seem to really like First Contact. I've never seen it, but watching the Plinkett review makes it seem like you really have to shut your brain off to enjoy it, and even then it looks weak.

Giacchino has been posting some clips from rehearsals of his live score. Sounds beautiful with some nice new themes.

Has anyone said anything about the soundtrack?

I am stunned this didn't turn out to be a piece of shit. I was banking on this being worse than Ghostbusters.
Had Paramount remained insane and let Roberto Orci direct this movie, we probably would have gotten an awful, awful movie. Like franchise killer awful (*cough* Blade Trinity *cough*).

I am glad Paramount came to their senses before it was too late.

If you listen to the writer commentary, you get the impression that they shat out an action film to meet a deadline.

The funny thing is that they did the same with All Good Things and that's the best TNG movie.

Rotten tomatoes Critics Consensus is up:

Star Trek Beyond continues the franchise's post-reboot hot streak with an epic sci-fi adventure that honors the series' sci-fi roots without skimping on the blockbuster action.

So Abramsverse is 3 for 3.

That's pretty impressive.

You can enjoy First Contact if you abandon the entirety of Picard's characterization and several key events that occurred in the TNG universe after Best of Both Worlds. In the end, First Contact suffers the fate of all TNG movies; Trying to make an action movie with a cast and a franchise (at the time) that was unfit to do action movies.

I can't wait. I had faith (of the heart) that Beyond was gonna be great.

Is Justin Lin the best action director since James Cameron? I like to think so.

Concept of the movie had been done before, was completely half baked, actually did betray all the other members of the crew except Kirk, AND the budget what actually the largest the TOS movies had (tied with the first).

Pretty much. I agree it's the best of the TNG movies, and has positive aspects, but it was not a good character piece for Picard.

5 is a Shatner masturbation project, much like Nemesis was for Spiner and Insurrection was for Stewart.
I guess it says something that Nimoy was the only one who didn't try to push himself in the movies he had control over.

TNG movies are pretty funny. Generations had the closest characterisation to the TV series. First Contact was the closest to being a great movie. Insurrection had the closest story and plotting to the TV series. Nemesis was the closest to actually looking like a film.

Movie is so fucking overhyped. Like probably the most oberhyped movie of all time. No way it approaches the quality of the TOS episodes, it's slow, dumb, predictable and the "kirk is old" angle has zero weight to it.

Can't believe this movie is beloved, I guess it's the memes.

You've been waiting to call something I thought was good overhyped since that Neon Demon thread haven't you

This is a joke

But no, I'm old enough to have seen it in the theater and I like it because it's a fun romp that's actually written and performed better than it ever needed to be. It's a filler episode turned into memorable popcorn flick.

I certainly don't hate on TOS, it's still my favorite Star Trek even against TNG and DS9, but WOK just had a different energy than TOS without throwing it under the bus.

Yeah, no. Its one of the most boring, overrated films I've ever seen.

Hey I dunno, maybe it was just better at the time after all. /shrug

Do you like TMP?

Plinkett has the ability to destroy any movie in existence. I wouldn't judge a movie solely based on one of those videos.

We should change the name of this thread to "Rank The Star Trek Movies."

He doesn't destroy Star Trek 2009 or Titanic in the same way. His points for First Contact are completely valid.

Probably a good descriptor for it. I have a hard time usually explaining why I don't find it that bad in comparison to the on-the-surface less offensive and bland TNG movies (Generations and Insurrection especially), and I think this is it—it actually aims for something, and for all Shatner's weaknesses as a director he was given probably the shittiest scenario to make a Trek film ever, from writers strikes to following on the heels of IV, to production issues.

Hopeful about this film. If the reviews keep up I might go see it this weekend.

I can never forgive V for pretty much ruining the side characters though, good thing VI salvaged it

Well of course his points are valid! I'm simply saying that forming your own opinion and critiques of a movie is just as valid, if not more valid, than relying on the drunken (however coherent) ramblings of a pizza-roll obsessed character to affect your stance on a film that you haven't even seen.

Oh that's what you meant. My bad. Yeah, one should definitely see the movie first. I used to like First Contact a lot. I don't hate it now, but i don't hold it in as high regard as I used to.

So modern Trek is the opposite of old trek movies where the odd numbered movies will be good.

oh fuck, you're right, even if we count the old movies

man fuck Nemesis for fucking up the pattern

I still think Search for Spock is good though

But the internet said this movie was going to be terrible because there was a Beastie Boys song in the trailer and Captain Kirk rides a motorbike.

I always thought the complaints about the Borg Queen were overblown, but rematching First Contact the other day I do admit that the final confrontation with Picard just seems weird and unnecessary. Having a single controlling voice to the Collective is fine, but that she turns out to be so vindictive and petty seems totally out of character with the Borg—she's manipulative to get what she wants, but the Borg seem like a force that's not about anything personal, it's just business when they wipe out your world.

I generally hate how Red Letter Media has become tantamount to unassailable gospel, though, instead of just being treated as the single critic voice that they are.

I hold their opinions in very high regard, even if I don't always agree with them.

I generally blame them for a really skewed view on The Lego Movie.

I just watched this. I absolutely loved it. Best Star Trek film for me so far. Some of the hand to hand action scenes were cut too fast but overall this was amazing. Damn I didn't expect to like it this much.

I felt that the Queen added a nice hypocritical taint to the Borg that before wasn't really explored. Honestly, before the Queen the Borg were boring. The whole force of nature thing was sort of already dampened by Locutus. Having the Borg being controlled by a vindictive individual made for an interesting dynamic, its why I actually love the way the Borg are used in Voyager.

Do you like TMP?

TMP is probably the best cure for Insomnia ever devised by man.

But like I've said before, I've never been a fan of anything Star Trek aside from the Abrams films. Despite constant attempts by my other friends to get me interested in the "Real" Star Trek, as they call they them (You can guess what they think 09 and ID).

I just don't find Star Trek interesting, never have. Just feels way too cheesy and preachy to me.

Just saw it.

Yeah it's pretty good, also that twist at the end. It will keep your attention and has really nice nods to the past. And the send off to Nimoy is really touching.

btw question,
did they make Sulu's character gay?

So modern Trek is the opposite of old trek movies where the odd numbered movies will be good.

When you include Galaxy Quest in it's proper place between Insurrection and Nemesis then the good every other movie trend continues without interruption.

Yes! He has such an awesome and cute little moment. Also, he's badass in this film.

Ah I was a bit confused at the part when Kirk asked him.
So essentially Sulu implied their daughter was from the other guy?

And yeah. Pretty much has the strength the good ST films have - they let all of the characters do something.

Hmm, I assumed
they had adopted the kid. Was great to see this happy family when they got together in Yorktown. I heard some loud gasps in my audience at this moment.

By the way can I safely say they MACROSS'd the climax?

Exactly, hence I was confused. Wasn't the dialog like...

Kirk: So... did she come from your side?
Sulu: You're kidding right?

Or maybe I misheard.
