Metroid Prime: Federation Force Review Thread

Every once great japanese video game franchise needs a mediocre co-op action spinoff, it seems. Resident Evil has Umbrella Corps, Metroid's got Freedom Force, Metal Gear will soon have Survive.

Cant wait for Final Fantasy's

Isn't Final Fantasy Explorers a Coop action spinoff?

Regarding the whole "enthusiast website" thing, I find it amusing that it is "Nintendo Enthusiast" that has given the lowest score in the OP.

I guess. What's always bothered me about this image is that you could apply it to a bunch of Nintendo's franchises, why single out Metroid? Where's my sad Captain Falcon cupcake artwork?

Yes, it can apply to a bunch of other Nintendo franchises, but Metroid Prime is considered one of the best games of all time. It sits at #15 in Metacritics top games of all time, with only Mario and Zelda as fellow Nintendo games near the top of that list.

Mario and Zelda mainline sequels are a given, not for Metroid though.

Plus Super Metroid perfected the exploratory gameplay of Metroidvania. Samus is also one of the most popular female characters and only recently has Other M gone out of its way to defecate on her status as a powerful character.

So as of now, Federation Force is the lowest rated title in the series, beating Other M by 10 points on Metacritic (not counting the GBA version of Metroid NES).

There's no reason real they used Metroid for this, either.

This has more in common with Metroid than say Mario Kart has with Mario. Nintendo has always used preexisting IP to boost sales potential of new game ideas. Smash didn't start off as a Nintendo mascot brawler.

I actually thought it'll do worse so ThisIsFine.jpg

But seriously, this year has been the shittiest year of Nintendo in the last decade or so due to the not so great amount of titles they've released. All the games they've released so far have been meh or simply not with the top notch quality we're used to see from Nintendo. SO dissapointed for that.

Ouch. I seriously doubt this is a worse game than Other M, but I can obviously see how it's way less appealing.

Not that I didn't expect these reviews or have any sympathy for the project, mind you.

It might just be the reviews I read, but it seemed like the more negative ones focused more on the Single Player, versus the positive ones (like Kotaku) who played mostly in Multiplayer.

Well hopefully Emily's rumor about the NX having some really strong 1st party support comes to fruition. Also that rumor about Next Level having another secret project in the works

Lol @ the mixed reviews. "It's actually great!" "It sucks." "Tons of variety!" "Every mission is boring." "Definitely a Metroid game!" "Absolutely not a Metroid game." Yikes.

Also those wondering: GameXplain isn't one guy. Derrick Bitner reviews most of the games and is almost always overly positive; Andre Segers, who gave the negative review of TPHD, is a lot less lenient.

Yeah, that's what it looks like- the game was designed and balanced around the co-op mode and then they slapped a few things on top of it to make it just barely playable in solo mode.

Tbf, quite a few games on that list have been well received. Fates, Robobot and TMS spring to mind.

I guess one could argue that nothing on that list reaches the highest Nintendo echelons, which is a shame.

Fingers crossed for that. I honestly cannot wait to move onto Nintendo new hardware : /

Well, you got a point there! Quite a big amount of titles but honestly, most of them quite forgettable. Few exceptions of course like FE Fates, Kirby, MH: Generations... I totally forgot about Mario and Luigi Paper Jam existence!

Wii U side is totally screwed with nothing to look forward other than Paper Mario Color Splash and that awkward robot game from Miyamoto wich I still can't believe is still in the works. After that, good bye Wii U. Well, Zelda BOTW is coming but if the NX version turns out to be superior then there's no reason to stick with the Wii U version of Zelda.

I've got to admit, some of the environments shown in IGN's review actually looked pretty decent. Why didn't they show off any of those better looking levels before? The concept is still woefully unappealing to me and the reviews only confirm that it's just as bad as it seemed.

Anyway, I'm going to repost my gif and you're going to like it.

Why ew? Some aren't out yet and some of those reviewed very well.

Even the critics seemed really conflicted on this one. Doesn't seem like there is a solid conclusion yet.

Kind of fits, given the developer has a really hit-or-miss track record.

There have been worse years for certain. I'm on mobile so I can't look them up. But as I said above there are plenty of games in that list not released yet and plenty others that reviewed solidly or better.

So it's garbage. Poor NLG, got suckered into helping this project.

A lot of the negative reviews actually fault things NLG directly developed though. Like the beam charge and level design. I actually think the game is good, like many others. I don't get how anyone could review this game a 5.9.

It's certainly the weakest year I could remember from Nintendo. I did enjoy Star Fox Zero though.

From what I am gathering:

+ 10-15 hour campaign
+ Co-op can be a lot of fun
+ online is rock solid! (Edit: non-region locked)
+ Deep customization/strategy during Co-op
+ Great mission variety
+ Great replay value on top of campaign length

= Solo may or may not be fun, depends on you

- disappointing as a "Metroid" entry (I know what I would be getting into)
- primary weapon not very interesting, advanced ammo is rare (only IGN?)
- possible griefing by other players grabbing the upgrades (?)

This sounds like a AAA 3DS package to me. I believe this will be my final 3DS purchase, and it feels like a worthy one!

It sounds like single player is rated between downright terrible to OK, while co-op is rated between not great to pretty good.

Even the positive reviews don't seem huge on the single player, but I bet that's the most commonly played mode given the nature of it being a handheld game.

Yeah it's pretty slim, not much interesting outside of #FE and Fates.

Are you a non-Pokemon fan and also a sadist?

Hunters having an 85 seems so off.

It was back in the days when adapting any form of gameplay to touch controls was seen as so innovative that the scores got a huge boost. See Phantom Hourglass's scarcely believable 90 on Metacritic for further confirmation. The vast majority of those games have NOT aged well. Hunters was far from terrible though, and graphically it was incredible for the hardware it was on.

Scores were generally inflated back then anyway. It was the era of "<8 means shit sux".

Even if I don't like the game, I expected a metascore above 75. This looks quite bad.

Considering that the game will not be released in Europe until September 2nd, that metascore can grow up with the European reviews, or get even worse.

Poor Metroid... At least we got AM2R, the 30th anniversary wasn't bad at all.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.

The irony is that most gyro-aiming shooters (FF included) on the 3ds and the wiiU gamepad utterly destroy the best stylus control schemes on the ds.

Yeah, I'd be curious to see a game as nervous as Kid Icarus Uprising with gyro controls.
Answer is none. Stylus control shits all over gyro control, because it's nearly as accurate and fast as mouse.

Other M's Metascore is at least 10 points too high. Many reviewers scored that game on inertia and brand alone. The real backslash started later. You only need to read IGN's textbook example of a bad review (gave it an 8.5) to see it.

If you want to go that deep, one could say the opposite happened this time.
