Metroid Prime: Federation Force Review Thread

Game was incredible fun, enjoyed it as much as any Prime game, the hard mode in particular was amazing. Loved how bold and well thought it was, the pacing, and the return to pulp. The scores were well deserved. It's only after some people made up stuff about "misogyny" in the story that the "worst game ever" meme took off, ruining the whole franchise potential into hyperbolic hysteria. A Wii U sequel would have been great.

Hilariously so, to the point of parody.

Literally all that poster does in these threads is whine about Metroid fans
I love every single Metroid game released, so I still click on Metroid threads. But all people like you literally do is whine about Metroid, including the games you have never played, and sometimes I react to that. When the main thread about the latest release has an OP warning so that discussion is still possible, you know things got to a critical point.

I'm going to ignore the idea that Other M was well thought out or had good pacing (this game has literally hours of unskippable cutscenes), but blaming the game for not getting a sequel on a meme that got out of control is ridiculous blame shifting. The game failed because it sold like shit.

And the insistence that the misogyny in the game was made up is something I would love to hear you elaborate on.

Here's another set of Coulda Woulda Shouldas.

If Tanabe wants to make a Metroid game from a perspective other than Samus's... Just make a Metroid game with a different character. He keeps making games with other hunters in them... Why not just make a game centered around one of them with their own set of powerups unique from Samus?

If Nintendo management demands the IP appeal to the nonexistent Japanese audience, then make the artstyle be anime with realistic proportions (Valkyria Chronicles, Fate/ games.) rather than the bullshit runaround of chibi being because technical reasons.

If they insist on having a story, do it how Prime did it, maybe some radio dialog that doesn't interrupt gameplay, or hell, the Codec system from Metal Gear. If they really want cutscenes, they need to be rewards for intense sequences of gameplay as a breather moment, rather than constant interruptions that kill the pace.

Not trying to shit on the game whatsoever, but just noting nobody pre-ordered this game at my GameStop. I opened at the store today and put our only copy (yup, only got 1) out behind me and not one person asked about it. My store has a pretty popular 3DS base, the new Kirby game sold a lot here. I guess nobody is really interested in it, and it doesn't help that they didn't advertise it at ALL in the store, where the 3DS section is still littered with Kirby and Pokemon.

Gaf has a ton of diehard Metroid fans, me included. As of right now, the Fed Force review thread has 4 pages, the Fed Force ending thread has 4 pages, and the thread for people who bought and are playing the game (the OT)... just made it to two. Two pages.

That tells me loud and clear that no one is going to buy this game.

Also, I think the Federation has had too much Good Guy screentime since Fusion's release FOURTEEN YEARS AGO.

Bring on Metroid 5 with Federation mooks replacing space pirates - And, y'know what, hell, have the Federation Force characters as a 4-man boss battle if the mess that FF's plot is has to be canon.

Slightly OT: I wouldn't mind a Metroid game where Samus starts without the suit or arm cannon or any special equipment (IE, not the Zero suit either damnit.), just civilian clothes with basic protective gear (Saw some fanart of this somewhere as part of an anti-Zero Suit argument. I'll look it up again.) and a pistol slightly infinitely more powerful than the Zero Mission pistol and the basic Power Suit itself is something that has to be acquired. Would be a nice way for some subtle post-Fusion storytelling through Samus's state (Visible latent health issues not fully healed from X infection, longer and unkempt hair from not being able to get it cut due to frozen (or tracked) bank account in a world that's presumably long past physical currency, maybe some Prime 3 scars showing up again from stress.).

Stuff that shows just how much Samus has gone through by the time Fusion is over and establishes just how dire her situation is after destroying the research station, being in anything but her prime state and the Federation homing in to arrest her on whatever planet she's hiding on while she's not prepared for a fight, or being shot down, crashing on a planet, and having to flee from a Federation search team without having time to suit up - etc etc.

If it drops in price to like half rrp, say ~£15, I probably will out of morbid curiosity, but there's no chance until then.

It's next level games I feel bad for, they sign an exclusivity deal with Nintendo, then this title happens. I hope they're not going to be hit too hard, but they clearly should never have been put on the metroid series.

You know Im thinking this was more Nintendo management giving them something to work on and stay busy/pay their staff while Nintendo works out its future plan. You know, something to keep a good part of NLG working on a project while they (potentially) staff up for a NX title.

Also it allows thwm to give Tanabe a low risk, lower budget chance to move his vision of Metroid Prime along. I could see Nintendo management seeing it as killing two birds with one stone for a low price. They likely didnt think fans wou!d react so strongly to it, but I doubt they ever saw this a potential multi million selling blockbuster. Just keeping people busy, satisfying a senior producer, and filling a spot in the schedule.

For the record, I completely agree with you, and all my concerns for Metorid's future stem from the vitriolic response of a vocal part of the fan base.

If nintendo decided to put metroid in the freezer I'd completely understand their decision.

Hows the difficulty, the last Kirby games I played were the 2 Wii ones. One normalish one which I really enjoyed, and the yarn one, which was adorable but I got really bored of it.

Bravely Default was bad so I just assume bravely second is too.

its definately not as easy as epic yarn. The robots are quite powerful but way more clunky so i had a few times were i missed a jump (which usually never happens in a kirby game) also the focus is on the puzzles anyways

You clearly don't know any better if you can't understand why most people didn't like this game. Or maybe you never played any of the previous Metroid games. Because there is a HUGE difference in how the game is played and how the story is presented. You may prefer Other M's style more but your condescending babbling about "misoginy" and "memes" is nonsensical and has nothing to do with why fans hated it.

No it wasn't. It was fun with a very strange way of portraying a character
The game by itself was a decent action game, yes. And fun. But the problem is that it's a terrible Metroid game. This is why people hated it.

Oh wow. I expected this to do bad, but not to this extent RIP.

I guess this really goes to show that even if people like to blame Metroid fans for being picky and whiny, the sad truth is that this game was never a good idea. You can't just make a spinoff of a relatively niche series and make it obviously unappealing to its fans, then barely give it any marketing so it ends up having literally no audience.

It's a bit unfair and sad that it'll sell worse than Other M, but eh, Nintendo brought this to themselves when they decided to greenlight something like this that anyone with a bit of common sense could tell was gonna bomb from the start.

After playing the game, I can understand why there were so many complaints about the solo difficulty. It gets pretty tight without Lone Wolf, and I'm not even that far.

Sounds like the region-free multiplayer is solid so I'll play it with randoms.

Maybe the people who bought the game are actually playing it and enjoying it.

Actually the other threads where haters who weren't going to buy it would be complaining don't have that many posts either, maybe they are playing it and enjoying it too.

There must be dozens.

Yeah... I'm going with that's not what has happened. It'll probably take a miracle for the game to chart in the top 5 anywhere.

Im so ready for the Gamexplain discussion about this game. Not just because of the potential guests but because theres gonna be one person playing devils advocate the entire time even with the flaws of the game.

Wonder if this game or Metal Gear Survive will be forgotten quicker.

Metal Gear Survive because it's a game you totally expect of Konami nowadays. Thoughtless. It's 'oh, we hope you won't hate us with our next game.' A dime a dozen Zombie game :|

This game was treated like the fans didn't know what they were thinking when Nintendo initially received all the hate it got.

While Metal Gear fans got a complete story followed up by shit, Metroid fans got shit, no communication for 6 years, then another piece of shit.

As a fan of Metal Gear from the very beginning I'm fine with Survive. It's a spin off of a dead franchise which had run it's course.

The fact it's Konami certainly factors in too, they dropped or killed most of thier other series years prior so them canning Kojima wasn't that big of a surprise.

Regardless, I still think people are overreacting over this game.

Easiest Kirby game I've played, personally. Still really good, though. Kirby games aren't really meant to be challenging, IMO, just fun.

It's not even a unique game to Nintendo. Concept wise, it's the exact same game as Triforce Heroes, with a lot of the same problems. Problem is the Zelda fanbase is bigger and the series is still getting games. Metroid isn't. This isn't just a spin-off, it's a rehashed spin-off.

It's embarrassing how Nintendo this gen continues to make two of every single genre they touch. 2 Mario Karts, 2 2D Marios, 2 3D Marios, 2 Mario Tennis', 4 Zelda remakes, 2 Yoshi games, 2 online co-op MH rip-offs, 2 Smashes.

This image has single handedly ruined any humor i get out of Super Paper Mario now because of its use in modern gaming to try and shut down fan criticism of titles.

Wow whats that, fans of series want an entry using the gameplay people love it for and not for it to be horribly mismanaged? Oh nooooooo

Hence why the NX is supposed to unify the chaos.

If Other M is misogynistic then Skyward Sword is misandristic. I could make up a case for anything, but when you put the fact that Samus is scared of Ridley as a way to emphasize this "abusive relationship" then something has gone haywire.

If that was your takeaway from the blog you should probably read it again.

Criticism is fine, the image was aimed at the overreactions bit.

And this game is a spin-off(and originally not a metroid game at all), expecting the same gameplay of a mainline metroid prime game was unwise.

It won't stop their producers/directors from making games people clearly don't want, which this is.

And I'm guessing it'll sell worse than Tokyo Mirage Sessions, and that game did horrible. Then we'll see what Nintendo does. Because if there's a Metroid game in development past this mess, it's gonna be canned pretty quick.

How is it a rehashed spin off? Hunters was a totally different thing and puzzle elements existed only in single player. I agree though that they are making too many versions of the same thing and canibalizing their own sales. I am glad that they have an hybrid comming up with nx

I haven't played FF but I did play Other M and reviewers were very lenient on that one. But I can definitely see how the opposite could be happening to FF

After playing the game for a few hours, I actually feel like the score is too high. The controls are extremely clunky in either configuration, the "puzzles" are very easy to figure out but pretty tedious to execute, combat encounters are an exercise in patience rather than being engaging, and the graphics are pretty bad. I went into the game expecting nothing and was somehow disappointed regardless.

Im definitely getting it when it gets down in price, simply because i want to check it out for myself, being a huge Metroid-fan. But yeah, that will probably be in a years time or something like that.

Triforce Heroes is a MH rip-off? I've heard it all.
