iOS Gaming August 2016 | A sever-ly hot summer

Hello iOS GAF! I am lurking these threads from time to time but it's time to ask.

I was hardcorely playing Marvel: Contest of Champions for almost two years but those greedy bastards just doing everything to earn money. Since I like to invest time instead of money on the games, i've decided to part ways with the game and even sell my account since they are still selling like pies.

Now I need a new addiction. Pokemon GO is the one, but it's kinda on the go. Anyone can advice something like MCOC where you can play for ages and get some champs/gear/rpg_stuff?

I'm thinking of picking up Teeny Titans but it's not a F2P and looks like i'll finish it at some point.

i wish Marvel could work with a developer and create a grindy f2p iphone game with more compelling gameplay. i tried them all and found them lacking.

i have played a lot of non-Marvel grindy f2p phone games as well, and there are only 2 that i still have:

Hearthstone - Blizzard's CCG, fun core gameplay, super polished app, compelling grind to keep me coming back to get new cards & card backs

Vainglory - the only MOBA to really click with me as it has a ~8 minute 'pick up and play' mode that feels great as well as a more traditional ~20 minute MOBA mode. the grind for unlocking new characters & skins keeps me coming back, especially after you find a few characters you really like playing as

@awp69, any thoughts on Space Grunts?

Sorry. Missed your post earlier. It's a pretty fun turn based rogue like, but TBH, I haven't put much time into it. Too many good games have come out and it just kind of fell to the wayside.

And there's other rogue likes such as Crypt of the Necrodancer that have gotten more attention from me. I'd HIGHLY recommend it over Space Grunts if you're wanting a rogue like. The rhythm element also just makes it all the much more fun.

Leap of Fate and Solitarica have sucked up most of my mobile gaming time lately.

I dunno about Crypt... looks good but the reason I am after Grunts is something in the description "this turn based game is for people who doesnt like the genre", hoping I can get into the genre once and for all... and I am tone deaf... with this in mind... will Crypt be for me?

Well, being tone deaf might be a problem. There are lighting cues as well but I'd say the music really does make the gameplay more fun. So maybe not in your case.

Space Grunts is decent I just never spent a ton of time with it. Sproggiwood is also one of my favorites in the turn-based rogue like genre so that you may also be one to consider.

On another note, I saw Shaun Musgrave wrote a story about Bulkypix going bankrupt. So might be a wise idea to download any of their games you like to be on the safe side.

I just downloaded Penumbear and Pix N Rush since they are two of my all time iOS favorites.

Inks and Charmeleon Run are both 50% off!
I would also imagine that Castle of Illusion is being removed on September 2, since that is the day the game is delisted on all other platforms. So if you want it, now is the time.

Fotonica, Limbo and Dust: An Elysian Tale are all on sale as well. They're each 99c.

Bought Lost in Harmony (also on sale) and Inks myself.

Entering this thread always costs me money :(
Thanks for the heads up, bought Dust and Inks.

Wait, I wouldn't imagine Crypt of the Necromancer being hard to play for a tone deaf? I haven't played it much myself but I'm tone deaf, and I hope I won't miss out on cues.

No. It can be played with the visual cues and there also is a mode where you don't have to follow the rhythm.

And, honestly, I miss the beat quite a bit anyway :()

Demon's Rise 2: Path to Damnation from Wave Light Games is coming out next month. Maybe we should have it in next month's OP.

Are there any games out there like 'Out There Chronicles' ? Not the roguelike, the visual novel or whatever you want to call it. I found it a fun 'game' for bed since it didn't involve any real interaction other than clicking on choices. Was sad to realize it was episodic at the end. Something like Reign would fit, but I've beaten that. The telltale games are a little more complex than what I'm looking for

iOS is home to some great Telltale adventure titles like The Wolf Among Us (engaging noir) and Tales From the Borderlands (charming sci fi romp)

Sorry, I edited in that I was thinking something less complex than telltale games but I do keep hearing great things about Tales for the borderlands. Might as well try that out. I've played the rest of their lineup other than minecraft

Thanks

it very much is in the 'tell tale' style of game, but it is the finest version of it IMO

genuinely funny dialogue, a very charming cast and a compelling feel-good adventure romp

plus each episode has an opening credits scene with a different song. it's almost worth it just for these moments - that's how good they are.

Maybe some game books like Sorcery! and Joe Dever's Lone Wolf might suit your fancy. Otherwise check out games from the developer Choice of Games LLC. They got lots of interactive story books.

If anyone is interested in Lone Wolf, that's a Bulkypix title so might want to pick it up now in case their games are pulled from the App Store.

I've been playing Puzzle and Dragons for 3 1/2 years, my daily login says 1300 days, it has very active Facebook and Reddit communities. It's a "match 3" puzzle game, but the gameplay is way beyond match 3. I find it continues to offer challenges, and while I've put way more money into it than I would like to admit, I've not paid anything in a long time, 8+ months if I remember correctly. They run events every other week and there are tons of folks that haven't spent a dime on the game. If you have the will power to not spend money on it, I would highly recommend the game. If you don't have the willpower avoid at all costs.

Whoever was asking about Space Grunts, I'd pass, I always felt like I was missing something, there really isn't a hook, it's just a rogue like, and got repetitive for me. Sproggiwood on the other hand is a treat, much more engaging and fun.

As Saucycarpdog said, the Sorcery series, 80 Days, Lone Wolf, Heavy Metal Thunder, the recent Mr Robot game, and interactive fiction from Tin Man Games is what you're looking for

If you don't mind something in Telltale style, 1979 Revolution is pretty good as well.

Blackbar and Grayout are text adventure/word puzzles, with engrossing narratives that explore different facets of the same dystopian world

Thanks (to you and everyone else) for the suggestions. I did a play through of 80 days recently actually and really enjoyed it. Will give the rest a shot

The last Sorcery game is coming out next month, so now would be a good time to start the series. Your choices carry over between games

Hmmmm, doesnt sound good. If you say is decent, then it is. Also, tested Sproggiwood and I already got my time with it... and after browsing M_B very helpful threads I found Crashlands... dont have it... so the thing is Space Grunts vs Crashlands. Which should I buy

Wait, I wouldn't imagine Crypt of the Necromancer being hard to play for a tone deaf? I haven't played it much myself but I'm tone deaf, and I hope I won't miss out on cues.

But that removes the core mechanic... and what makes the game special, IMO

I feel the core roguelike mechanics are very strong even without following the rhythm. Each enemy has patterns to learn, myriad items and weapons that change your attacks and tactics, and the many different classes to use. Which I think is a testament to how good the game is; it still stands as a great roguelike apart from the musical element

I'd have to agree with this Frost. Even without the rhythm, I'd still recommend this over Space Grunts.

And as far as Crashlands goes, it's a really good game. Just maybe didn't quite live up to the hype. I liked the streamlining of the crafting/survival elements (which I typically avoid games with a lot of that) and it has the typical Butterscotch Shenanigans humor. That said it gets old after a while.

Contest of Champions is life. I've played it pretty much every day since it's beta 2 years ago. It employs randomness to its progression but what I've found rings true to this day it's simply a matter of finding an alliance of equal minded and dependable people to play with.

Maybe try Future Fight, it's not a fighting game but has similar progression mechanics with less random associated with which characters you get. I however grew bored of that in about a weeks time. I'd play Injustice if that game had any forwards and backwards movements, this is where MCOC excels, but it does not. Injustice and any of the other Nether Realms fighters can also be easily hacked with unlimited currencies which trivialises all progression and any online competition which breaks the game IMO.

Ultimate Spider-Man is a great F2P game with daily log in bonuses if I remember correctly. But you have probably already tried it out since you played Contest of Champions; which is by the way a game I'm looking to get back into.

I just saw your PM, I don't think I can help you with early MCOC progression or strategies these days. I've been looped up in the "end game" top tier game for too long to know what early on is like, Kabam changes it up ever so often so any info I'd possess would be out of date. I'd say hit up the subreddit for the game for info.

Thanks for this. Just bought Republique and Human Resource Machine! And also Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon.

Also, I installed Vainglory. Might give it a go and see what this MOBA is all about.

By the way, did Chameleon Run really just get an "update" to let people know about the 50% sale? Like really?

I *need* Warlock of the Firetop mountain on my iPad.
Yesterday.

My God, it's beautiful!!!!
Counting the days already....it will be a long and painful wait.

Just looking at those images on the store front makes INKS look like a puzzle game. Doesn't it also say that in the description?

Just had a perfect run in Solitairica only to be put down in two turns by the blob monster that uses fire/lava. How the hell are you supposed to beat that if you don't have any luck there?

I don't deny it but the heart wants what the heart wants!

I would've gladly taken an endless/zen mode.
I just tried it out actually, and I can see why you thought it was a flipper game. Well it is but with that artsy twist. I also started up Lost in Harmony which is also on sale for 79c; it is not only very pretty, it also sounds great and the soundtrack works in coercion with the gameplay. It's pretty great yeah but I'm also only on stage 3. It comes with a touching story as well, with this couple loving each other but the girl being sick.

Started of Human Resource and it seems even better. I'm at stage 4 but can't wait playing it further. So I got some great games to play to kill the until Lumines tomorrow! Or does it launch tonight at midnight EU time?

I have also started thinking about the Lumines VS game. My mother loved the original on PSP and Tetris too, but she haven't had that itch covered on her phone or iPad, so it might be a lot of fun if I can play that against her, and others from this thread. Hopefully it'll lean as much up of Lumines Puzzle & Music as possible.

A new Marvel game has soft launched in Canada! The name's Marvel Tsum Tsum, and what I find interesting is, that it seem to have the same gameplay from Yokai Watch: Wibble Wobble which is one of the best mobile games from this year in itself. Unfortunately it seems like Tsum Tsum could rely heavily on free-to-play aspects, either wait to fill up or pay up to play more straight away. Anyway, it looks good.

By the way, I tried out Tetris Blitz, and it's the worst Tetris I have ever played. You can even rotate your pieces, instead it select different places you can place it, and then you just have to tap the screen. Horrible.

Do anyone have experience with The Firm? It's also on sale and I see it's about managing the stock market or something along those lines, which seems interesting.

For those who still haven't gotten it, Super Hexagon is also on sale for 79c. One of the best games to have ever hit the mobile platform.

It's not as interesting as it seems. It's fast-paced arcade twitchy gameplay where you need to react to graph and swipe them left or right depending on what they indicate

Thanks for the impression. I'll make sure to stay clear. I'll be keeping my eyes on Bluk though, seems interesting with the physics platforming and the precision you need under pressure. Also thinking of Emma Wants to Play to have a horror game on my iPad.

By the way, so far I won't recommend A New Life. It's just too tedious and repetitive and your choices just changes some bars and earns you XP.
