Probably but we shall see my friend. We shall see. I know people have been saying what you have summarised but really do we know that for sure? What's the point of Nintendo patenting Supplemental Computing Device in 2014 if not to use it in 2016?? Cloud sux cos internet speeds suck. Only way to really supplement something and make a difference is to do it physically. Plus Nintendo can't be that ignorant designing another console that's again going to be well behind Ps4 Pro and Scorpio to make it difficult for 3rd parties to Port across. Like what happened with Wii U. I think it needs to be Ps4 baseline power when docked as currently most games are developed at this mark and enhanced for Pro. I expect the Ps4 to exist for a while but when the Scorpio comes out they will probably start developing for the Ps4 Pro and enhance it for Scorpio in which case the Switch will be challenged again. At this point they may upgrade the hardware in the supplemental device.
Companies patent stuff all the time.
Doesn't mean they'll use that patented stuff in the near future, if ever.

They patented the shoulder scroll wheels last year.
What's the point of Nintendo patenting shoulder scroll wheels in 2015 if not to use it in 2017??

Nothing prevents the scrollable shoulder buttons from being part of a mid-gen joycon upgrade.

Pretty smart system Nintendo have built, in that you can theoretically upgrade many aspects of the device without having to completely replace it.

Square Enix will hold a Dragon Quest XI panel this saturday, and we will likely see the game again, in its PS4 (so what the Switch version will look like) and 3DS form.
I'm really pumped for this one. We haven't got a look on the game since summer 2015.

I was thinking about this today: rumble will be included in detachable pads? To me would be cool have rumble in portable too.

If you're right handed all you have to do if face the controller down and those two shoulder buttons will be on the left side lol.

Actually..that's not a bad solution to replace the trigger (although I doubt Nintendo would do it).

Obviously turning the controller with the pointer upside down would mean there would be no visable buttons on top..but if the analogue stick is on the underside, you could then flip it with your index figure as if you were pulling it like a trigger.

That's my point.
Just because there's a patent in place doesn't mean they will use it right away.

I really just want to see Nintendo start fresh with just traditional controls (plus the optional touchscreen) on this system. Wii's are dirt cheap if you really want to backlog and play those games and Wii U will certainly drop in price fast once the Switch is out. Keep it simple for consumers, simple for devs.

I imagine with the new leadership the brief would have been. Give me a console that is unique but powerful enough to be competitive and for 3rd parties to develop for. The old leadership was just give me something unique. The SCD is the answer to still retain the Nintendo uniquess but have the power to compete and be easy to develop for. If this was the old Nintendo I'd lean more towards conservative but this is the new Nintendo who are now releasing their IP on smartphones and creating theme parks.

I don't expect Zelda BoW to have motion+ controls, but I'll be disappointed if it doesn't offer Twighlight Princess motion controls, at minimum.
They didn't even keep those controls in TP's latest release. Can't see them making it a secondary option now.

Should be part of the joy-cons, yes.

Two things I love about the Switch, and I think have a big chance of becoming industry norms:

1. Separate left and right controller parts, allowing for free hand positioning and movement, and maybe even one handed gaming for some simple games. This was one of my favorite aspects of Wiimote + nunchuk gaming, but I wa dying to see this concept being applied to traditional controlers, instead of motion controlled gaming.

2. Is more of a consequence of 1. Because the left and right side of the controllers are separate, it allows the existence of customizable left and right parts, allowing you to combine then. Nintendo could eventually sell a right side with the gamecube layout, or a left side with a traditional + D-Pad.

Or a customizable center. They could replace the Grip with a thumbboard a la that crazy GameCube keyboard. Or other bizarre options. Maybe there can be third-party Grips with five times the battery capacity (assuming the Joycons can charge from the Grip).

Straight Right did the port. My feeling is that those guys don't like remote stuff. So if they're doing ports you can pretty much guess they're gonna cut that part. I think it depends on who does the ports as to what kind of features will stay or go.

I wonder if Nintendo did it themselves if they would have kept them in.

Tegra X1 chip is so small. If the custom chip is just as small maybe a second one sits inside the tablet and is activated when in dock mode, which will also activate the fans to cool them down. This configuration would be better than boosting clock speeds on a single chip yeah? I imagine that would produce more heat.

That would add about $50 to the price, if not more. It would also be pretty inefficient.

Can't wait to see the UI. I hope that they make some kind of "fun" interface for the virtual console, like instead of folders have a dedicated menu for it maybe with some 8-bit theme track in the background. Something like NES classic.

Boosting clock speeds is far more energy efficient than powering another chip. And far cheaper. And far less demanding of developers.

If there was any additional hardware like SCDs at launch I really don't get why we wouldn't have heard it by now, considering so many other things have leaked.

Well, if I remember the interview with Nintendo about it, it was "discussed" and taken out. My feeling about this is that Straight Right didn't want to add it and made a "compelling" case to not do it. Nintendo followed their lead on it. I just think that if Nintendo did the game in-house they would have added it as at least an option.

I think the biggest thing the Switch needs more than anything else is a great out-of-box experience.

My perception of the Wii U was colored from day-1 by its illogically, given the hardware, unresponsive UI, long loading times, and long update times. Meanwhile, the tablet felt so cheap and toy-like, and the launch lineup certainly left some things to be desired.

Looking at the Switch, I think it's clear they've got the hardware and software lineup in a good place. Now if they can just make sure the OS is fast, and so that I can basically boot up and play on launch day, I'll be happy.

You speak the truth.

As soon as I got a Wii U I understood it wasn't as user friendly as the Wii was. And I sort understood. It was too much of a hassle for me, let alone a casual gamer. They have to fix that.

Like you said, the NSwitch needs to be playable and a good experience out of the box. Something the Wii U wasn't.

Well the second chip will only need to be powered when in dock mode and I imagine two of them would be more efficient than the Gpus in the Ps4 or Xbone yeh? Actually 2x Tegra X1 gets about 2.3 TF at Fp16. Which is plenty of power for 3rd party Devs. Nvidia has already created a module using two X1 chips in the Drive PX. Perhaps they borrowed this idea but whacked in the custom Nintendo chip using Pascal tech. Problem though is the power upgrade is limited to the tablet. If it was in the dock instead they could easily keep up with the upgrade cycle by releasing new upgraded versions of the dock. Makes more sense to put this in the dock. There hasn't been any leaks cos of what happened with the Wii U, so they've probably compartmentalised things so not one single person knew what was going on. Except for maybe a handful of senior Nintendo executives and the Pope.

1 + 1 = 2.3?

Do you think there are multiple sku coming (portable version only and console version only)?

I highly doubt it.

Otherwise they would have called it something else.

The Dock already includes the portable, but you could perhaps buy just the portable. I think they would rather create a brand new handheld than to destroy the Switch like that.

I am so fucking tired of seeing posts like this. You should not want video game "journalists" shilling out to publishers and developers. Journalists have a moral and ethical obligation to report what they hear which means they can't sit on information that could damage a person or organization they personally like. I'm not even sure how this anti-leak culture started because no one complains when there are leaks in any other medium. It is celebrated in sports and politics and there is no reason why it shouldn't be in the video game sphere.

Also, if Nintendo wanted to prevent leaks, it should have done the reveal months ago. I'm guessing it's next month so they could announce pokemon stars without hurting the sales of sun and moon which is greedy. It is no one else's fault but Nintendo's that Switch information has leaked and no one should feel sorry for them if more stuff leaks.

Gonna completely disagree with you here. Journalists have an obligation to report what they hear if it's in the public interest to know the truth as soon as it is uncovered. But we're not talking about a political scandal or anything that could have a negative impact on the public in any way, we're talking about a luxury item. Plenty of game journalists agree with me. Very recently, Emily Rogers herself chose to not reveal more Switch information. Another Nintendo-related example would be when Kotaku knew about Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze before it was announced and kept quiet. You're seriously arguing that they had/have a moral and ethical obligation to reveal that information to the public.

TPTP HD controls are garbage.. As someone who has been using a lot of FSPER motion controls on wii and wii u, TP and WW gyro controls are too sluggish. They should go back with pointer controls for first person aiming.

In regards to boosting clock speeds.. It could simply be a matter of lowering clock speed in portable mode, and having it back at "normal" clock speed in docked mode.

Do you think there are multiple sku coming (portable version only and console version only)?

No. A few reputable leaks said there will be 2 skus, but both will have docks. I don't think they should anyway, as it was their selling point to sell it as a hybrid. The dock is like an ac outlet with hdmi and usb c plug ins.

I could see in a few years they could get a sku without a dock with better battery life.

Seems foolish to cannibalize the sales of the 3DS version when Nintendo and SE can advertize having two unique versions of the game on Nintendo platforms.

Furthermore, how would a 3DS-to-Switch port work? The hook with the 3DS game is that it displays a 2D and 3D view simultaneously on both screens with the ability to enter 2D or 3D battles depending on whether you control your character with the D-pad or the stick.

The simultaneous display of 2D and 3D only happens during the beginning of the game. After that you'll have to select one or the other, although you can always switch between the two.

Somewhere I read (Twitter source?) that multiple base station units can be used with a single Switch (portable) so I wonder if the base alone will also be sold.

If you're right handed that wouldn't work because you'd be presumably holding the joycon R flipped with your right hand. So your palm would be on those inner shoulder buttons, not your index and middle fingers.

I think it would be pretty easy to press some of the 4 face buttons below the analog stick when flipped like that, but you mainly lose out on trigger functionality which was a huge part of the wiimote.

In the Fallon video it clearly showed 2 shoulder buttons

no way in hell. it'd be like releasing a wii SKU without waggle, goes against the entire pitch

i do however think the inevitable Switch Mini will be marketed as a 3DS successor. but even then i expect an hdmi out for tv

It'd probably come with a USB-C to HDMI cable, instead.

Oh god, I completely forgot the suffering that was involved with updating my launch day Wii U.

Now that I think about it, I can't believe I'm about spend another $300 on Nintendo hardware after how awful my overall Wii U ownership experience was.

It'd probably come with a USB-C to HDMI cable, instead.

Or maybe an evolved version of the WiiU video streaming? Except it'd be in reverse. Instead of the WiiU transmitting a compressed 480p framebuffer and audio to the gamepad, a newer Switch SKU could transmit a compressed 1080p framebuffer with audio to the TV using an HDMI stick.

I remember a now completely false rumor back in the day about an evolved version of the WiiU streaming. Still, that's very good technology going to waste, imo. Nintendo should take advantage of that for convenience. Like the gamepad, you're still only going to be a couch to TV distance away anyway, so it'd be easier to handle making a 1080p revision. Once you're going to leave, just stop streaming from the console to the TV and you have all the hardware just like the Switch should as intended. I'm thinking way too hard on this since really just having a dock taking up every TV in the house is already very convenient as it is.

I could see a Switch Mini in a couple years with the dock sold separately(along with a Pro controller, since a Switch Mini would probably not have removable joycons).

The regular Switch will always come with a dock, though.

What do you guys think the Switch screen being used as a tablet?

Think about it, if you remove the Joycon from the side, you're left with a screen, which is essentially a tablet. We know Nintendo sees smart phones and tablets being a threat to the traditional game console/handheld. What if they can work a deal to somehow support Googleplay or something similar to let the Switch function as a traditional tablet for people on the go?

I travel a lot for work, and I bring my phone and tablet with me to work while I travel. I also bring my GPD XD. I know a lot of games are supported on phone and tablet, but my GPD XD plays better thanks to having actual buttons. Hell, the GPD XD is technically a tablet too, and I can use that for work. Just that the 5 inch screen = heavy base makes it a little tougher to work with.

Imagine if the Switch screen can double as a tablet now. Now people will have another reason to buy their hardware. Sure, everybody has phones that can do all of that, but whose phone can play Breath of the Wild after you're done replying to a client's email? Whose phone can play Skyrim after they're done reading their Ebook? Whose phone can play Smash bros after you're done watching porn on the go?

This isn't journalists agreeing with you. It's journalists wanting a relationship with Nintendo that's positive for them and keeps them in the loop.

Not all of them care to do their jobs the way that some others would, such as Laura Kate Dale or Jim Sterling, who don't live in fear of being blacklisted and (occasionally) openly celebrate it. Journalists live in equal parts appreciation for and fear of major publishers, this is not some obscure factoid.

There's zero reasons to think it will be the 3DS version instead. It would take way more work to make an FHD remake of the 3ds version than just port the PS4 one.

It's for Jump Festa but since it usually airs way too late I don't really know when exactly it will take place.
