HBO has five potential Game of Thrones spinoffs in development [GRRM & Bloys updates]

That last paragraph is a perfect summation of why fans are so frustrated with him. Maybe instead of wishing for more hours in the day, he could stop putting more things on his plate until he finished what he started? But no, by all means, keep doing everything but writing the books and then wonder why it is you're so slow in writing them, GRRM.

We're not doing Dunk & Egg.
I did the double middle finger at my monitor. He's never going to write another one of those. Let HBO finish it
like they'll finish ASOIAF
.

edit: yeah they can't do the Long Night either. No doubt there are more revelations with the Others. There might also be an issue with continuity, because I suspect the show's version of events is different than George's. I mean, it's not really an issue, but also not something that would require his involvement.

I think it's a lot more than that. GRRM has always spoken about how much he loves writing about the Targs, and a huge chunk of World of Ice and Fire is dedicated to their reigns. So no doubt that'll be one of the main things they will be mining for more content.

The other thing they could be mining, which honestly I think no one wants to see, is Yi Ti and the Long Night. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I'd be down with The Long Night. My #2 pick. (Which you can turn into a joke about how it's a shit choice; I don't mind.) My #1's Valyria, though. Everything leading to its fall.

Yessssss @ no Robert's Rebellion. Booooo @ all of them being prequels. Mixed win. :p

I mean, this kinda goes without saying? By the end of the story they will have found the colony ship that originally crashed in the far North, defeated the White Walkers, rebuilt the tech, and all the survivors would be leaving the doomed planet which is freezing over due to the terraforming gone wrong. Can't really have a sequel...

Wouldn't that be a bit of a repeat of what's already happening in Season 7/8 of GOT? Also it would have that foregone conclusion problem. Going by what GRRM says there, I think they're aiming to avoid that aspect of a prequel.

not in his shit canon

my story about Daenerys and Jon's kids having wacky adventures with their sassy dragon friend is on its twentieth chapter. HBO wouldn't pick it up though.

Its nothing less than magical that while people are clawing at the walls for him to finish the books he is working on TV shows.

That is fucking hilarious

Ah, yeah... you're right. I can't believe I hadn't considered that. I'm appalled and ashamed.

At least he's doing some work now rather than watching football and going on vacations and eating pizza. It may not be the work we want. But any work is an improvement.

I know thousands of you want that, I know there's a petition... but by the time I finish writing A SONG OF ICE & FIRE

Sucks that we're only getting prequels. I wanted a sci-fi game of thrones that takes place 1000 years in the future!

Well, they could be doing a spinoff about that civilization out on the plains (Kingdom of Sarnor) that got wrecked by the Dothraki.

On second thought... that's a terrible idea. I think that short little story in The World of Ice & Fire was my favorite bit in that compendium.

It's pretty strange how TWOW isn't out yet. Boy, it's a fucking mystery. I wonder what's taking him so long! Surely he's not editing four Wild Cards books, writing another history of the Targaryens, starting a new project, or sipping margaritas with five separate television writers?

WINDS OF WINTER, five successor shows, FIRE AND BLOOD (that's the GRRMarillion, remember?), four new Wild Cards books, some things I can't tell you about yet... it's a good thing I love my work.
Maybe it'll out be out this year. 2017 is the year!

At last, we can stop hearing from people who think Robert's Rebellion would be a good idea for a TV show, even though it would be almost nothing but battles and the narrative features very few character arcs worthy of the name.

Kudos George.

At this point it really feels like he's looking for an excuse, ANY excuse, not to work on TWOW.

We're not doing Robert's Rebellion.

Good

We're not doing Dunk & Egg. Eventually, sure, I'd love that, and so would many of you. But I've only written and published three novellas to date, and there are at least seven or eight or ten more I want to write. We all know how slow I am, and how fast a television show can move. I don't want to repeat what happened with GAME OF THRONES itself, where the show gets ahead of the books. When the day comes that I've finished telling all my tales of Dunk & Egg, then we'll do a tv show about them... but that day is still a long ways off.

GOOD

It's selfish of me, but I really wish he would spend more time working on the mainline books. It's been twenty years and the series is only slowing down.

*GRRM announces a 2000 page long artbook that he will illustrate*

to borrow Tolkien's term

Couldn't help but chuckle after reading this.

Anyway, kudos to him for even giving this an answer, could've just ignored it (even though that answer was just a PR spin "it's not a spin-off but it totally is, stop calling it that")

The idea of exploring different parts of the universe in other shows is a really cool idea, but I'm skeptical solely cause I think the writing quality in the mainline show as been on the decline and I'm not sure how new material would work.

Also lmao at GRRM still thinking hes going to finish the books.

After he spends 10 years mastering microsoft paint.

I don't blame the dude, clearly he loves fucking around enjoying himself, and few people end up in the situation he is in where his work catches on like wild fire and eclipses his ability to produce, why not have fun with it.

But helping create TV shows based on the success of a TV show based on your work that you haven't finished, causing the TV show to have to write past you.

That is something else. Can't make that shit up.

I'd say some of the writing in season 6 still had some "uhh" moments for me. They continue to not really know what they're doing with Jamie anymore, Arya's plot felt like all it led to was
now she has the ability to use the face changing ability
and everything else was for waste. It was definitely a step up from Season 5 and I loved the Miguel Sapochnik directed episodes. But other than the one off episodes like Hardhome, BotB, Seasons 1-4 are still higher quality to me.

Spoiler for BotB
It was annoying as shit that Sansa withheld that info about the Vale army during the season, just so we could have a "Oh no they are gonna die Jk THE VALE TO SAVE THE DAY" ruins an absolutely breathtaking episode IMO. Even if she apologized the next episode, it really felt dumb and just made Jon look like even more of an idiot.

Other stuff:
The Daenerys plot in those first 4 episodes was pretty rough. Tyrion and Varys in season 6 also felt like their season 2 story line but bad

Thats because in the spoilers

1.
John was a giant idiot
2.
Sansa knew that littlefinger was untrustworthy. Telling jon to trust him and then having Littlefinger not show up would have been disasterous. Sansa played it smart.

Aegon's Conquest and Dance of Dragons I feel are a lock. Oberyn's past and First Men/children are what I think the other two might be.

I went from loving this series and deep-diving into the history of the world I loved to not really caring anymore since I'm never going to get the proper ending or supplementary material I wanted. Maybe if WoW is ever released my passion for the material will come back but for now I'm pretty meh on the whole thing.

Dangit George

This. We might know what happens as he puts it -but we still want to see it

too many great moments (seeing the Mad King in general) and I thought having younger versions of the same cast would help connect things for the casual audience who still don't understand how R+L=J worked

Oh well

LAUGHTREY

Lmao.

Edit: Wait found an even funnier quote.

ROFLMAO!!!!!

Will he finish that story tho?

The Hedge Knight - 1998
The Sworn Sword - 2003
The Mystery Knight - 2010

With at least 7, possibly 10, more in the works?

At his current rate, no.

Not doing Robert's Rebellion or Dunk & Egg is a good call

Those were the two most obvious choices, so at least they're trying to subvert expectations somewhat.

I'm starting to wonder if we're ever going to get WoW.

Much like Berserk, I had already given up on it a while ago. The last two books were rather mediocre anyways. I mean I'll read it if it comes out and all, but I'm not sitting at my computer getting upset that I can't have it or anything. It's a dumb thing to get worked up over imo. It's just a book. There are more books out there than you have the possibility to read probably a hundred lifetimes over, and quite a bit of fantastic ones as well. Go pick up one of those, and move on with your life. Ain't the end of the world guys.

Besides, got fans are in the luckier side of this problem because they're guaranteed a resolution of some kind. That's way more than a ton of fan bases have gotten.

no roberts rebellion is a huge disappointment imo
Actually that's what gives me hope these "spinoffs" are not just cheap cash-grabs. How could they possibly make a Robert's Rebellion show as tense, unpredictable and shocking as GoT? Give us stories we don't know all the answers to.

Exactly. I just got into the series by watching the show, and after what I heard about GRRM not being able to finish the books, I am content just watching the show.

At least they will finish things.

(and i guess, GRRM is quite happy that he doesn't need to finish it himself, or probably doesn't even intend to these days anymore).

Well at least we know how that story ends anyway. The important stuff towards the end of Dunk and Egg's relationship are detailed in World of Ice and Fire.

Sounds fine. They might as well use the expansive world that has been built up for more shows with different focuses and casts or characters. Setting it in different periods where the centers of power are different would be cool. Or in areas of the world that rarely if ever get visited.

I mean really there's loads of possibilities. I'll look forward to seeing what comes out.
