Waypoint Thread: Vice City Stories

Part of it is Vice Editorial and legal as well. I had a feeling Austin knew some things all the way back to when Waypoint was just getting off the ground and man, this whole situation is rough :/

This was a really good conversation; it's weird to known that some of the facts were somewhat known before, especially considering how insular the enthusiast press is. But it definitely helped me process how gross and shitty this situation was/is

I'm actually shocked to see them wade into this, especially so soon, but if there's any site I trust to treat the situation with the care it deserves, it's Waypoint.

I'm jumping ahead to the Nick episode myself. I also didn't believe they'd talk about it.
If you subscribe to the RSS feed before it redirects to the acast one. Here is the rss feed. Also a quick google search would give you this result too.

i couldn't open this page on the my iphone last night, but here's this:

https://media.acast.com/vicegamingsnewpodcast/episode86-nickrobinson/media.mp3

you can find the link off of this page: https://rss.acast.com/vicegamingsnewpodcast

not obvious and they hide it a lot...

Alright I still don't actually see the link (at this point I'm assuming it's something on my end), but using the DownThemAll extention for Firefox I did manage to find the link on Waypoint's site and get it. The filename is wrong but everything else seems OK, really strange.

Thanks for the help y'all.

That was an interesting conversation, and I agree that the NeoGaf thread actually did go sort of okay until it turned into people talking about Trump.

Glad to hear them speak openly about all this going on. I've disagreed with this crew on all sorts of issues throughout their time as a site, but I respect what they do so much. Thanks for all you do Waypoint crew.

Listening to the Nick Robinson episode, and man, Rob Zacny's take on Battle Brothers is legit fascinating. I haven't played it, but it's the first time I've heard about its more troubling views on... certain issues, whether intentional or not.

I find the way the Woopcast (all of them) engages with games, analysing their playtime so throughly, a very difficult concept. No matter how hard I try to view a game I just can't do it with such clarity--I just play games to play games in comparison. It bums me out because it kills my ability to be critical of a game--and worse, to focus on what I like about it. I'm a very shallow gamer... it's kinda depressing.

Was Austin describing a game called Shivering Isle? As you'd imagine, it is hard to Google a game called Shivering Isle.

Ah, never mind. It was The Shrouded Isle.

Engaging critically with a work, whether it be a game or film or book, is a skill you build over time. Listening to criticism in particular is a great to help sharpen those skills, so I'd say you already have a great start considering you enjoy these discussions.

Of course there's nothing wrong with playing games just to play them, it's just when people try to use that a justification to stymie critical analysis where I take issue.

I really appreciate the waypoint crew for actually digging into what is there instead of "thing is problematic please be outraged with us" type boring lazy junk that so many run with.

They did it for the Nick story as well. I saw people talking about "the power" he had and while I thought he was a creep, I found people acting like some random dude wielded power over people laughable. Instead of saying "if you don't understand you're scum fuck off" it was an actual explanation of that aspect of the situation that was logical and made me realize I was being overly dismissive of that aspect.

After listening to the most recent Waypoint Radio...keep Natalie.

With almost zero experience talking about games on a podcast, she's pretty good about putting conversations about games and their specifics into focus.

Hire her!

I know politics isn't something people like hearing on their videogame podcast, but god, I really appreciate the Waypoint folk talking about this past weekend.

I listen to Waypoint specifically because they discuss politics and express their opinions on the podcast itself. It helps that I agree with them for the most part.

Other than the segue into it from the light hearted No Man's Sky discussion, I agree. I kinda wish they would dedicate the entire podcast or cut it short if they're going to discuss tragedies, but it's a good thoughtful discussion and the reason I cued up the podcast (I figured it would be discussed this week).

It's great that they don't shy away from it. It's the same reason I like following Abby and Ben from GB , Griffin from Polygon, or Gita on twitter. It's nice to see that people deeply entrenched in gaming don't shy away from bullshit.

Even when I hear folks like TB, who have a history of saying centralist both sides shit, speak up against trans-phobic comments at the conventions they travel to it makes me feel a little warm and fuzzy inside.

Apparently they're gonna spoil Sonic Mania on tomorrow's podcast?

I would hope they wait until the 29th before doing any spoilers since the PC version doesn't drop until then

Of course they're not going to wait. As long as there's adequate warning, people can skip this one episode.

There was a little while there where Patrick's tic of describing things as interesting wound down a bit but man is it ever back with a vengeance

...Peace?

wow. cool, great. good.
you're all the worst

Re; Nick Robinson I imagine if they had updates to share on their story they would talk about it. I wonder if they were instructed to wait until there's some distance or something
