We’ve seen what happens to $500 and up consoles. People can say what they want, but history shows any console priced above $400 doesn’t reach enough people to be mass market.
And Sony knows this better than any company.
Some old consoles probably beat that mark. Was not a standart. At one point consoles used to cost $299.
The irony is that people that would buy a $999 console have more money and would actually buy more games, increasing attach rate.
The opposite side is people that bought a Dreamcast for $199 and pirated all the games.
Consoles are severely underpriced for the longevity of the product.
And some consoles have cost $500 and $600 and they’ve tanked at those prices. Look, if your goal is to make the next PS3 or be Xbone X then by all means..At one point consoles used to cost $299.

Different times. Cross gen will play a huge role in this gen. As I said before, Sony will not give up PS4 when PS5 launch and probably neither Xbox. They will be selling at the same time. They fail to sell in numbers appreciable enough to keep software developers happy. Not enough hardware = not enough software being sold.
Thank you!fuck $399 consoles, that shit gimps an entire generation.
Which adds even more of a barrier to PS5 adoption -- why buy a PS5 with no games for $500 or more when you can just keep playing your PS4? Is that the message to be sending?Different times. If the Series X is cheaper than $500, GP is doing banger numbers. More than most thought.Looks like 399 is on the table because of digital sales ! Game Pass just secured a 399 price tag possibility for Series X.
You're missing fell huge points. I not because I say 'crossgen will play a huge role next gen ' means 'next gen will not get next gen games'.Which adds even more of a barrier to PS5 adoption -- why buy a PS5 with no games for $500 or more when you can just keep playing your PS4? If it were weaker like 8-9 tfs I could see it. Especially if they're less powerful than Xbox and that gets priced at $500 they shouldn't be the same pricedid anyone honestly see a $399 console?
And a hell of a lot more than a $500 PC will get you. Bottom line is consoles are one hell of a bargain and if it's a big jump from PS4 I'll be happyI miss the days of launch $199/$299 consoles just as much as anywhere else, but inflation plus the cost of tech means that shit's expensive. I guess the best solace anyone can take is that a day one purchase at $500 will get you at least seven years of usage, if the last two generations are anything to go by.
Cuz they have to buy a new Iphone that'll come out around the same time. Why are people freaking out over it being $500, just save up $5-15 a week until release day and you'll be set.
My best prediction for next gen would be
Series S: $399
PS5: $499
Series X: $599
It will all be about whether Sony gets people to look at PS5 as a bargain and very similar to series x for $100 less or if they'll look at it as a rip-off and more similar to series S
agreed!! people wait in line for new iPhone's, pay out the a$$ and do it again the following year. a console will hold you down for years. i know they're two different markets but money spent on luxury items is money spentCuz they have to buy a new Iphone that'll come out around the same time.
In my profession I offer three sets of hardware at $1400, $1700, and $2000 that all get you ALMOST the same basic outcome. A few extra bells and whistles and some nice conveniences of differences but MOST of my customers pick the middle option. Another anecdote is that I just thought a Google pixel 4 for $800 when there was what I saw as a slightly better or basically the same iPhone pro for $1000 and a lesser iPhone for $700. I picked the middle option because I thought of it as the best value.that would be the most interesting outcome. that situation would be a nice little experiment in the field of consumer choices... will the mass market go towards the lowest price, the highest specs or the middleground.

Yeah and they was £299 here tooAt one point consoles used to cost $299.

$500 in 2020 is like $400 in 2006.
Its nothin.
I think most people see the cheapest option as...well cheap. And when you get up high enough a $100 difference doesn't seem all that different but of course diminishing returns the higher you go. Of course we don't know what the stats are so if it were $100 between each one I honestly think it would depend on which PS5 looks more similar to when they show off games. If they look as shiney and flashy as Series X I think it would be very good for Sony. Sony has been not most powerful nor cheapest before during PS2 and PS1 so it's not a perfect strategy for beating themthat was what I though too. the balanced middle is psychologically very tempting I bet. in your mind you think "well it's not the best one but it's still good and not too expensive"
I bet there are studies that would suggest this to be very common in many places.
399?judging from some angry/snarky replies in a couple of the next gen megathreads, it seems like a lot of people still cling to “399 or DOA.”
Im expecting 599 and hoping for 499. I don’t understand how it’s even possible for either of them to cost 399 unless being sold at a HUGE loss. I feel like it’s unreasonable to expect to mid-range gaming PC power for less than half of the price. I don’t care if it’s mobile equivalents
I think more and more people buy multiple games given the convenience digital buy gives them with all its monthly deals.HA, you actually think the average player nowadays buys multiple games? nah, what these people would do is buy the 1k system and buy Fifa for it, and then buy $5000 worth of in game player packs for it.
Back then they had all kind of "platinum hits, player's choice, etc" So with your $200 console you could buy Twisted Metal 2 or Die Hard Trilogy for $20.I think more and more people buy multiple games given the convenience digital buy gives them with all its monthly deals.
Same goes for steam and epic.
I buy games i dont even care for if they are on a deep sale.
And if i realy want to cheap out there is gamepass.
To think about it you buy a console even at a 1000 bucks and you have 100's of games you can play for almost nothing.
Back then you bought your 200 console and spent 60 or up to a 100 for games.
At launch????Back then they had all kind of "platinum hits, player's choice, etc" So with your $200 console you could buy Twisted Metal 2 or Die Hard Trilogy for $20.
What ever pays their bills. It really annoys me how biased towards Xbox / MS a lot of these media types are... the endless articles of how Xcloud is the future and MS have the future all sown up and Xcloud is the next big thing...... and now of course we get DF repeating this 9.2TF bullshit.
Then he goes on to say Lockhart will be a good thing... LOL. Well, if holding back the entire industry is a good thing!?
Jesus, it's so tiresome.
I got that referenceIf you cant afford the Ps5 fortunately there is a console for you its called the Ps4.
399?
Man i got kicked out cuz i told an idiot off cuz he was pushing for 299.
Nah you cant reason with liberal socialist hand out warriors.
In what universe do people expect 400 for a new console when it was 400 seven years ago.
Seven years ago i paid a third less for groceries than i do now.
But sure lets expect a console for 400 all while everyone is bitching about the minimum wage.
Well news flash. The more you pay for your employees the more the product will cost and i am not just talking about manufacturing but shipping and retail etc.
399 give me a break.
Please trust me when I say I'm trying to come at this from as non-bias of a standpoint as I can. But are you are saying that Sony is willing to take a loss in next gen software sales but not hardware? Or are they going to take a loss on both? You're missing fell huge points. I not because I say 'crossgen will play a huge role next gen ' means 'next gen will not get next gen games'.
Sony already confirmed PS5 will get their exclusives for use the potential of PS5 bump hardware. I'll be there for PS5 because if at least half of the PS4 library get some sort of update to reflex the specs bumps of PS4 to PS5, will be worth anyway.
Besides, what I find funny is, the same logic apply to PC. I mean, why you need to get a better CPU or a better GPU, when you can just keep playing on your current PC?
Concluding, Sony or Microsoft should not want to 100% their actual install base to instajump to their proper next gen, but just to make this transition a little more comfortable unlike Xbox 360 to Xbox One/ PS3 to PS4. This time their have a even more structure waiting for next gen.
