Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Some media from the last page, there were tons and releases outside Alyx so check it for much more, I can only embed 10 in a post and at times there were 10 per post. Edit: oh yeah, the Quest video, most of it will be/is on PC too, if I put the individual full trailers I'd waste most of my embeds!

Also a small Alyx patch already. Yay, smooth turning and stuff:
  • Improved turning options in Preferences:
    • Added "Continuous Turn", and associated turning speed options.
    • Renamed "Quick turn" to "Snap Turn" to make its functionality clearer.
    • Added option to disable controller turning.
  • Improved hand-over-mouth pose usability for Windows MR controllers.
  • Improved the resolution of impact decals on enemies.
  • Improved automatic detection of default Quality settings for some machine configurations.
  • Fixed an issue where some sounds didn't play as intended.
  • Fixed an issue where the main menu could become less responsive if you had many save games.
  • Fixed several crashes.
Also, damn (Edit: updated):

I just got past the part with the blind enemy, what a finely crafted adventure this is, though I believe it bugged for me while messing around throwing bottles all over the place as it was NOT roaming the cramped area with the battery cell behind the crank powered gate so I got off easy there.

Alyx is the longest game I've played in vr headset. 2 days at least 6 hour each day.
Vr developers really need to start optimizing their games for sitting experience...
After first day, I've had soreness in both legs. In the middle of a knight a calf spasm woke me up and hurt like a bitch.
Day 2 and I pack another 6 or 7 hours into alyx.
Today I get up to work and my legs are so sorry I almost cannot walk lol :D
Thankfully Alyx supports seated mode(although not as tall as I am) which works great (only tested for a moment) but snap turning cannot be disabled

Thinking of upgrading my GTX 970 to something like a GTX 1660 Super or equivalent. Is it worth it? Any recommendations?

Lol, Alyx (and other FPS) is nothing, try playing Pistol Whip for like just 30 mins or whatever it takes to do all stages in order and it's like leg day @ the gym.

It's a bit old now, good as it is, maybe wait for next gen cards to come out and turn that into a 2060 super or something. Also CPU is important too, you might not see the gains you'd like depending on what you have on that front. Maybe you want this thread.

I still don't get how it does that :p (probably the "unconscious" bracing against falling flat on your face)

Dance Collider is a nice medium between Beat Saber (which is ez-möde) and Pistol Whip

Well I do dodge around and kneel and lean all over the place like a fool, not like I see pro players just very slowly and casually swaying back and forth and dodging and shooting everything like it's nothing, lol. I've tried to just casually slowly move around all the time but get back into it before long.

I should add I only play in Deadeye mode myself, it's just much more fun to properly aim & shoot like it's some kind of musical abstract Virtua Cop game and not just a shooting themed rhythm game, but it's probably easier to be casual without it. That guy makes it look so easy still, he's so insane.

I only play dual wield so both my arms die equally instead of just the one :p (No, I'm not putting the other controller down, don't be silly.)
Also, Matrix style dodging only, my feet never move. Still, my legs are d.e.d. after even a short session.

Does Rift S get restocked very rarely or more often?
I added 1 to my cart and it was avaialble. 5 minutes later when I checked if I have the money etc.. it went out of stock.
Do they restock more often?

Anyone plays half-life with rift S ? I've finished it on borrowed cv1 but am super hyped to play it again on my own S

yes ive completed it. looks great, i get solid 80hz on ultra and 200% SS
no tracking issues apart from hand jitter, but thats on index too, so i think guns need a slight more weapon smoothing

aside from taking breaks, maybe time to exercise a bit. im not a big exerciser myself but before shower I do either recumbent bike (to about 145bpm) for 15-20 mins or some light weights while watching youtube videos or whatevs. should be longer for proper cardio but im lazy. obviously overall health figures into leg cramps, like if you’re heavier at the moment

How do you take in-game screenshots?

I've got the rift S and been using Left Menu+Trigger, but it gives me some odd results, goggles view or one-eye view.
Im hoping to take normal 16x9 screenshots like whats on the monitor while you play.

Pretty sure it's one eye's pov you view on the monitor (like all the streamer footage which sadly is often the left/non dominant eye so we rarely see how they actually play shooters lining up the sights properly and stuff) though I guess it varies by game and some probably have different spectator modes that are nicer (and maybe take more PC resources but if the games are light it's fine?). Screenshots in-HMD will be what you see in HMD, for what's on the monitor if it differs you'll have to use your regular screenshots apps I guess. I could be wrong, I gave up on VR screens early on, lol.

That's a bit of a bummer...

Here's one from HL Alyx.

Additions:
  • Added full-featured support for left / right hand for movement controls, independently of left / right hand for weapon controls.
To use this: Select Left / Right hand in the in-game UI, and then select the desired Weapon / Off-Hand bindings in the SteamVR controller bindings UI.
  • Added an option to draw subtitles and captions to the spectator window only.
  • Clarified Height Adjust accessibility options, and set better defaults across various controllers.
Performance notes:
Bugfixes:
  • Fixed a UI issue where graphics settings would appear to drop from Medium to Low.
  • Fixed not being able to use Quick Back, Shift-Dash-Jump, and teleport feet rotation when Controller Turning was turned off.
  • Fixed a case where loading a left-handed savegame from the Main Menu could cause the player to lose ammo.
  • Fixed savegames where the SMG was missing parts of its model.
  • Fixed a number of crashes.
Content Build ID: 4831658
Doesn't say much about fixing some situations where you can fall through the floor (it happened twice to me so far) and general physics wonk. Hope they get to those so others experience it more smoothly. Hope the new "defaults across various controllers" fix the weird default pose on Oculus.

That wivr walking device probably don’t let you move around a lot like crouching, moving side to side etc, so still more like miming than actually walking around

True, those movement types will be tricky to solve for a small portable/affordable home device for sure.

Back in the game. I had originally bought a CV1 at launch, then sold it when we had our second kid as it was not used much and my wife wanted a DSLR camera

got a used cv1 with touch controllers for 100 bucks strictly for half life alyx. tried vader immortal and thought it was fucking awesome

i really, really liked edge of nowhere a while back when it launched. any other similar games that you'd recommend?

Alexios

Similar like third person? Moss, Chronos, stuff like that? For solo action adventures, shooters etc., check the recommendations in the OP, there's plenty more than Half-Life: Alyx. Also, get a 3rd sensor for your CV1 if you have the usb port and room to set it up behind you for true 360 VR :)

I don't use either Home :d

Well it automatically loads the homes when i start either oculus or steamvr. It seems to me Alyx is also clearer than Lone echo for example. This could all be placebo hence my question.

For supersampling beyond what any given game has settings for, like Lone Echo which is quite old compared to Alyx so may have had less demanding options built in, you can try the Oculus Tray Tool (for Oculus where SteamVR ss doesn't apply). I don't though, it's not like I have a monster PC.

yea i guess 3rd person action adventures, will check out OP

my space right now is pretty small as i'm sharing my desk/wfh area. i need to sort out some long cables and run them to my den i think. from there i could do a proper room scale setup

Alexios

No, OP doesn't really have third person, just Moss and Chronos come to mind. Also, Trover Saves the Universe. You can get gamepad compatible games, first person too. From Subnautica to Battlezone. I usually avoid those as they don't really take advantage of VR. Also, flight, racing, mech games. Mods like MotherVR for Alien Isolation too. Or anything with seated play if you can move your arms around, just not your whole body, including FPS games like Alyx and Saints & Sinners unless you prefer to wait and get those when you can play standing and moving more. It's up to you.

i re-worked a few things today and have a much much better setup for room scale, about 7 ft x 10 ft. ordered an hdmi and usb extender. now to find a 3rd sensor that doesnt cost an arm and a leg

controller isn't required i just prefer it for 3rd person adventure type games. i also have a logitech racing wheel setup which i found great for VR last time, in particular i really liked dirt rally

Sounds like you're all set to play anything in the OP and pretty much any VR game then (just relying purely on analog stick snap/smooth turning to go beyond 180 degrees until you get a 3rd sensor) except tech demo ish room scale stuff like Unseen Diplomacy and Tea for God so, 99% of VR.
