New Godfall Details: Five Different Elemental Realms, Dark Souls Influence, Ex-Destiny Devs Involved

The May 2020 issue of Official PlayStation Magazine has unleashed new information about Counterplay Games’ and Gearbox’s looter-slasher, Godfall. Official PlayStation Magazine’s latest issue provides a rundown on the PS5 title’s setting–which includes five realms–its Dark Souls influence, and what players can expect in terms of progression.

Respawn First relays that Official PlayStation Magazine teases Godfall’s division into five elemental realms: Earth, Air, Water, Spirit, and Fire. The preview also addresses influences beyond Monster Hunter, which Creative Director Keith Lee spoke of in a recent interview. For example, developers drew inspiration from Dark Souls. This should prove evident in duels, as well as Godfall’s use of countering and heavy strike attacks. Furthermore, the team borrowed visual style cues from fantasy novel series The Stormlight Archive and First Law, in addition to Asimov’s The Foundation.

Other gameplay details concern confirmation of rewards for aggressive play. To deal maximum damage, for instance, each attack will have to rely upon perfect timing. In terms of the loot part of this looter-slasher, Destiny fans may find it intriguing that some former Destiny 2 team members are involved with Godfall, suggesting that a rich co-op experience is in the works.

Class will depend on Valorplates, the name for armor in Godfall. Players are sure to find new armor as they progress. It won’t all bear similarities to the bulky armor seen in the teaser trailer, either. That armor specifically comes from “one of the last remaining Knight’s Order.”

Finally, the preview reaffirmed a focus on the PlayStation 5. For now, there are no plans for a PS4 version. Rather, Godfall has been “genuinely tailored to run only on Sony’s new console.” The development team is taking advantage of next-gen features such as ray-tracing as a result. At launch, the title will also be available on PC via the Epic Games Store. Timed-exclusivity means it could eventually roll out across other platforms, too.

Godfall launches later this year.

Interested and cautiously optimistic, but having Destiny 2 members on board for the loot is not something to brag about.

So..whats the story with Destiny ? Isnt that one of the most popular MP game out there? Could at least learn one or two things from those guys

Destiny 1 was completely botched at launch with a severe lack of content. Took them 3 years to get to a point where it was amazing.
Then they completely botched Destiny 2 even more than Destiny 1 at launch, while having added a lot of content.

Gameplay and the social aspect is where the franchise shines, but their loot-system is really bad.

I don't understand the monster hunter comparison...do we have to roam maps killing giant bosses only to forge stuff with their teeth and skin?

I just hope it has a fun campaign to play through for people who don't care about loot.
Take a note from Nioh in that you can make a game with loot that's also fun if you simply want to play through it once and don't care about grinding the same missions over and over and over again for better loot.

Report me if I continue to console war
Does not look next gen from what we have seen of it so far and a "hack and slash looter" is not a good idea, this "looter" trend is something that i hope fades. They kind of remind me of mobile games, trying to give people little endorphin hits in some really shallow and imo transparent way.

Not sure if you're joking. The looter concept you identify as a trend has been a thing since Diablo (from what I can remember).

Got to admire them for going first - someone has too - but everything about this game shouts 'early console launch title' -I hope they can overcome that curse.

Maybe they might include it with a console at launch

I dig loot. Just, in general. I’m down for this. Will hopefully be fun with fiends, at least.

You can change valor plates on the fly, I assume? So basically you can be any class on any character?

This seems contradictory. Will the PC version require an SSD?

I wish it becomes a great game for those who like it .. but for me I think I’ll pass it if it’s like Destiny.. don’t get me wrong I’m an old player since the first beta until Crota to that glitch of internet cable..

but I hate it because they fucked up the content and the story is really really good but they just fucked it up so I hope GF become better than destiny

I remember when Bungie had also said that they were influenced by Dark Souls when they launched the first Destiny. Everyone laughed then and everyone is also laughing now.

Still roaming in the top 10 on Xbl and steam and putting up about a million user logins per day during a slow season. Corona virus undoubtedly keeping numbers up as well.

I was hoping this would be more like Borderlands and less like Destiny. With them having ex-Destiny devs it doesn't look like I'm getting what I want.

The destiny model is basically an okay campaign with a horribly shitty hamster wheel at the end of it.

I still can't fathom how some people still play it.

Looks like a Chinese bootleg game. The armor is overdesigned and impractical. Meh. Where's the BOOM, PS5? "Yay, let's see the frame rate take a hit in this gameplay footage!" FML

Out of all possible PS5 launch games, which have not been discussed at all apart from this, why... exactly this game? I’m sorry devs, your game might be good, but everything I’ve seen so far shouts nothing like next gen. It’s just so utterly bland. At this point, a next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 and FF7R sounds more interesting.

It just feels like we wouldn’t had seen Killzone Shadow Falls yet and they would be showing Contrast as the only next gen game in limelight during the PS4 reveal.

Destiny is like that promiscuous person everybody slept with, but nobody likes to admit they did.
Doesn't mean you had such a great time, you know.
Nonsense. The core gameplay, the visuals, the score, and the overarching aesthetic of Destiny 1 and 2 are best in class. The 10ish hour main campaigns are rock solid. People bought Destiny wanting Halo mixed with WoW and sadly Bungie couldn't deliver. But let's not act like both Destiny titles don't have at least 20 or so non grind hours of near perfect shooting gameplay.

Both Destiny 1 and 2 they couldnt get the loot right. It took patches and expansions to finally fix them. When you got a game that cant seem to get its main features right then its a problem.

Looks ok but I genuinely hope they steer away from Destiny in terms of gameplay design cues and analyse Warframe instead.

A fantasy-based Warframe with Dark Souls-inspired combat would be great.
