PS5 is bigger so it will stay cooler, Special Editions Teased by Sony

The console itself is bigger, around PS3 FAT size, but the amount and size of the actual vents hasn't changed much, if at all... So I'm skeptical, the size of the case has never been as important as the actual airflow. I guess until first hands-on/reviews we won't get to know how the acoustics behave.

Its fucking monstrous

No lie, that 825gb storage is very unappealing. Especially if its before considering the space the os takes up which is like 140 on ps4. Going by that, it'd probably leave us with 680gb which is a joke considering the size of games and updates.

I don't see the storage size as a problem considering that users will be able to buy additional storage. It's not as if 825GB is significantly less than 1TB; a 1TB drive would still be quite limited in regard to the size of modern games.

Is there an edition with a bigger storage option?

That's all I want to know.
I believe cerny mentioned they will release a list of third party hdd upgrade suggestions I think you can use a slower ssd for storage then move games on and off the magic ssd depending on what you are playing. Also I think the sides are going to be interchangeable like 360 face plates (my personal theory)

The PS5’s design has grown on me since reveal. It does have a certain elegance and I will surely have it day 1. As far as cooling and acoustics go, Cerny and his team will deliver what they have stated. I wouldn’t doubt that. I don’t remember them stating the PS4 would be quiet but I may be mistaken. They’ve heard the complaints and have publicly said they’ve addressed that issue. I believe them.
It seems the majority of us know that clocking a GPU that high will produce lots of heat. That alone makes me excited for the teardown to see how their cooling system works.

825GB is size of Disc. Size of Disc has nothing to do with actual space available for games. I expect real space for games to be around 750GB.

I just want an all black console to blend in with my existing components. I don't care about controller colors, and actually enjoy having different color controllers for reasons I can't articulate.

This is one of the big elephants in the room of next gen, but since its a shared problem of both Sony and Microsoft, theres not a lot of talk about it.
1TB is ridiculous and clearly falls short even for current gen. With 120gb+ avg (maybe?) sizes, an external is a must. BUT, part of the features of these next gen consoles are the custom SSDs, so potentially users would need to constaly move in and out games to the internal memory. That would be a terrible experience.

People talking about the PS4 Pro : WHY IS IT ALWAYS LOUD? UGH

People talking about the PS5: WHY IS IT SO BIG? UGH?

You can look at it the other way in that if the PS4 Pro wasn't so loud, and the PS5 wasn't so big, people wouldn't be complaining about it. Maybe Sony did it on purpose (I kid, of course).

I assume that's the size after over provisioning and OS (which will be written to at a lower rate than the portion reserved for games). That's my assumption, though. I've never seen a drive with such an oddball number. Storage usually comes in powers of 2. Meaning you jump from 512 to 1024GB. This is why i assume overprovisioning + OS. 10% over provision is a nice, safe number, that can help extend drive life, so that leaves you around 75GB of space for OS, when you do the math. We also don't know what process the SSD is built on, so if Sony went with a cheaper process to decrease drive cost, then it would make even more sense to have over provisioning to extend write life. Game sizes means you'll be rewriting huge chunks of the drive everytime you delete and add games, and they might want to keep a conservative reserve of writes to give a MTBF of around 5 years.

Also, if the write speed is massive on the drive, they probably expect game caches to see tons of writes, which would further increase the need to have a safety margin built in.

Great plan. Make a fugly giant beast and then sell limited editions that suck slightly less. Wow. Thing should have been black from the start.

Now watch Activision comes in with the Call of Duty games ballooning to 450GB -500GB on that 750GB hard drive (I'm calling it now). COD: Modern Warfare currently sitting at 240GB on the PS4 Pro, with more season updated still to come.

Hope so. All signs from Cerny point to expandable SSD, but those drives aren't available yet and we can't slap in any NVME unless it meets PS5 Specs. Sony should partner with Seagate like they did for PSP memory sticks

As long as the shit's not proprietary. PSP memory(or was it vita?) was ridiculously priced. I'd wager that the expandable memory for the XsX is gonna be expensive as fuck.

Without derailing this thread too much : that's a big theory of mine regarding Lockhart. Dirt cheap diskless sku that offers nex gen fidelity? They'll definitely be making that $ back on the SSD's seeing as games and patches are 100's of Gigs a piece now. They could charge $200 for a good drive and what are you gonna do now? Can't put a blue ray in and ur out of space

That is usually what happens but those are mostly artificial divides. Sony probably looked at Bill of Materials and wanted to meet certain price and they started to shave off parts of console, CUs here, GB from ram there etc. and they ended up with disc like that with such weird number.
So i don't think this is space of disc after correction for bit conversion and os space. But who knows maybe it is.

What games? COD, sure, and Destiny 2 on PS4 both were over 100. What else is 100s (plural, your words) of Gigs? RDR2 is less than 100gb on X!X and the PS4 version got just under 100gb. Elder Scrolls online is under 100gb. Blackops 3, under 100.

I think on X1X only Gears 5 got over 100 Gigs.

What patches? COD, sure. What other game had a patch be 100s (plural, your words) of Gigs?

Keep me posted on this one.

I mean that was immediately obvious. SOMETHING was going to have to be extravagant.

People were going as far as to speculate liquid cooling on a home console lololol....but they weren't off-base, because i'm sure we were ALL imagining a much smaller box.

They chose the form factor, which was probably the smartest move.......i mean plastic is cheap so

Why does it need to be so large if the Xbox One X can pack 6 teraflops of performance in such a compact package and stay quiet?

The Xbox One X is the best console design from last gen. It’s compact for how powerful it is, quiet, doesn’t have a weird gimmicky three layered trapezoid design, it’s solid black so you can hook it up right next to your TV without it distracting from the picture on the TV. Sony’s always been bad at design from their consoles to their controllers.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
They need to put out an all black console. The white color shows that Sony supports racism and sends the message that it's the console for white supremacists.

yes, this is satire

Ah so you don't know if it is. But fortunately Sony said that they heard about the complaints on the PS4 Pros noise levels so hopefully it's quieter than that.
Ah, don't mind me. Just trying to be funny (and a cynical bastard). I don't usually play the types of games that kick off the jet engines on my pro, so it's never really been an issue for me. :)

I always game with headphones so noise was never an issue for. Anyways hopefully the system rights cool and quiet because I really can't justify the size otherwise.
