Picked this up in the Steam sale and had a blast playing the first hour or so. I loved the 2016 game, and while this already feels pretty different, I'm definitely enjoying it. Feels like ammo might be a lot more limited this time around, which I'm still not sure how to feel about.

Unlike in Doom 2016, this game has an auto-refilling chainsaw. It’s all about the chainsaw for ammo. And there’s some upgrades that help as well.

Yeah, I noticed that part. I'm finding it hard to keep track of everything from the gore kills, to the chainsaw fuel, to the ammo levels of different guns, my (refresh timer?) grenade, and also which alt-fire mode I have activated, while also keeping an eye on health and armor all while I'm expected to be running and jumping around all the time.

Still a lot of fun, but it feels like there might just be one or two too many mechanics this time around.

Managing the different cooldowns should click with you as you play further into the game, and the combat is definitely an adrenaline rush when you have all the abilities are using them in succession, but I do agree with you. As many others have mentioned, Doom Eternal basically forces you to play the "right way", and it does that by adding a bunch of arbitrary requirements. In real life, chainsaws don't auto-refill, they don't give you ammunition when chainsawing someone, flamethrowers don't give you armor, etc. Sure, even from the very first Doom game there were similar elements to facilitate a fun playstyle, such as guns that didn't need to reload, and of course Doom 2016 introduced health drops when killing enemies to facilitate "push-forward combat". But Doom Eternal takes those elements and builds the whole game around it. Hence why I call it very "arcade-y", since the game has a very arbitrary video game approach to things.

And I think Doom Eternal is an interesting experiment in that regard. Why not go all-in on that approach for a game. It largely works and it's fun, but I do hope the franchise moves in a different direction for the next game. Or at the very least, they need to just scale certain aspects back to provide more of a "primal" gameplay experience while introducing other elements to keep the series fresh.

Audio cues are a thing as well that can be easily missed. You have to basically be 100 percent focused on the game.

Quick couple of questions, pardon me for bumping up the old OT. I feel I've missed how exactly Doomguy escaped from the sarcophagus again to be aboard his ship at the start of Eternal, and do Hugo Martin and Marty Stratton have no social media presence? I thought I'd ask, but I don't see any twitter accounts other than @idsoftware.

That's never actually explained as far as I'm aware.

The Doom reddit seems to think it'll be DLC. I've also just read that the enemy skins you unlock dont even work in campaign, only battle mode. Seems kinda pointless. Still, time for a nightmare attempt.

So, i had this game since release. But i wasn't feeling it. Performance was bad, sub 100 fps most of the time.
Few days ago i decided to give it another chance and started over. But this time using a controller instead of m/k.

I love Doom Eternal now.

Performance is way better. It stays above 100 most of the time. And i feel more comfortable playing with the controller.

I'm loving the combat, platforming exploration. Each weapon feels powerful and is fun to use.

Things i dislike are the enemies that can only be damaged for a brief moment when they attack. And the story is a bit silly. It reminds me of Darksiders. It's too cartoonish.

I downloaded and played Modern Warfare 2 remastered until the map Takedown. I played it on Hardened and almost threw the controller in rage. I had to delete the game from my hard drive.

Call of Duty just doesn't even compare to the likes of Doom 2016 and Eternal. Can't wait for some Eternal DLC for PS5.

Yes it is and much more satisfying to use. I really don't get people who say that Doom 2016 is better than Eternal.

Doom Eternal felt much harder maybe that's why people didn't like it but I think they improved so much from Doom 2016.

Honestly, I couldn't choose which I like better. Doom 2016 does certain things better but the gameplay in Eternal is more fun. I would like a mix of both for next.

So weird to see the enemies flash as they faulter... turned that shit off before killing even one. Auto aim too - why is that even present let alone enabled as default?

Awesome game though, still knee deep in it.

Yep, first thing to turn off. Much more immersive without the glowing. Actually these gamey things that I don't like in Eternal, floating neon pickups etc...

I completed Doom Eternal on the One X on Hurt Me Plenty difficulty, there is definitely no auto aim enabled as default.

How do you deal with the fire enemies? They seem to be possessing normal enemies with fire, making them harder to kill. Think I'm near the end don't want to lower the difficulty now.

I turned the difficulty down to "hurt me plenty after the first level. Died too often to make the game fun for me. Also a little too much mechanics and dependance on glory kills and the chainsaw for me. I must get used to it I guess. Love it though and can't wait for my kids to go to bed so I can rip and tear some more. Play on ps4 pro btw and performance is excellent.

This is interesting, i keep hearing how fans of 2016 still like that game over Eternal for the gameplay.

Im still waiting on a sale hopefully it won't be long i loved DOOM 2016 🤭

Please let us know what you think about the difficulty when you get a bit further in the story 😎

There was a 50% off sale (UK) a few weeks ago, that's when I got it. But if I knew what I know now I'd have gladly paid full RRP.

I loved 2016 and was hesitant when I heard of the changes so I put it off for ages. Now I actually think Eternal gameplay is better, significantly - and 2016 was already excellent. Feels a lot less bullet spongey and you feel like a maniac cutting through swathes of enemies relentlessly, never standing still. "Rip and tear" has never been more apt than it is here, feels amazing. There is the platforming stuff but you get used to that to the point it's not an issue. It's mostly action.

Default difficulty is more than fine, I don't feel like it is harder than 2016 at all. If you die it never feels frustrating, you are just glad you get to repeat the insanity because it is so much fun. The more you play the more you become a master - a mark of a good game imo.

I think that the main reason for that is there are more platforming in Eternal, which I liked. It adds to the "repetitive" (though awesome) gameplay.

So, let's talk about the story (Spoilers)

I guess now there are 2 different Samuel Hayden? Story wise make sense if a specific deleted dialog from the game is official. What do you think?

I still haven't replayed Doom Eternal... I was so hyped even after seeing the final boss stumble to it's demise but there are certain aspects of it I just did not like as much as 2016. The platforming was often just tedious and certain levels I just did not like at all. They felt too little like Doom somehow. Will have to replay both soon but I have too limited gaming time right now to be fully immersed and focused unfortunately.

Have been playing a lot of classic Doom as of late though, it still holds up and have an active community haha.

I have played through it twice where as Doom 2016 I think ive beaten at least 6 or 7 times now.

But I liken this to the pure adrenaline that is Eternal. I legit have to take a small break after beating a level in Eternal just to relax my brain for a second. Its a legit workout.

I felt the same with Doom 2016 on Nightmare. After some of the more intense fights I had to take a break. Interesting enough, I have ADHD and move my arms and legs all the time when playing but my wife pointed out that during my DOOM playthroughs I sat completely still and focused.

That, if something, is proof how intense the game is. The only other game who make me that focused are the hardest fights/chalice dungeons in Bloodborne. You have to be one with the game to prevail. And that's it I have to make time to replay Doom 2016 and Eternal before the DLC drops. I just found my own motivation.

Its not stated enough imo just how good Etnerals combat is. I think you can argue all day long that some of the stuff around the game isnt great, but that combat is without a doubt imo the most engaging and skill based FPS combat in history.

Don't stop moving. Upgrade the dash ASAP. Don't sleep on the shotgun rotating barrel mod. Pay attention to the audio cues late game.

I actually like the story for what it is, is just not told very well in Eternal. It needs more direct explanations but it feels like in attempt to not piss off people who don't care they lost a lot of people who would.

Doing much better in this run. I realized I was still playing on normal. Maybe after this easy run I’ll try to tackle the next difficulty. Keep moving is helping a lot 👍 having a blast now, but I still feel like I’m in a speed boat when I’m playing this game 😂 holy shit is it fast... these developers need to lay off the amphetamines!

It's basically speed chess by the end. You have to ideentify what enemies are on screen and what tools you have to defeat them all while not standing still.

Bought the game.... I’m in love, gonna be honest I kind like all doom games even he third one.

and this one is pretty epic, love the art of the game, the scope of the arenas, the run and gun gameplay the soundtrack ( although I think the other doom had a better one)

after a level need to compose myself lolol

the story is ok I mean doom never had a Oscar quality narrative. But how I love those artwork and collectibles....will finished the game and I’m hyped as fucked for the ancient gods part 1.

Yeah, I've beaten the game twice on Hurt Me Plenty, and now in the middle of an Ultra-Violence run. This game has definitely grown on me even more than before. You have to respect how they went full-on with the high-octane, demanding action and also doubled down on the neon coloring. It's all just so damn stimulating. lol

And I agree that the expanded story and some of the environments don't really fit Doom. Too mythological. Too God of War. Too far into straight fantasy territory basically. But at the end of the day the story is still pretty minimal and can be skipped entirely if you want. All in all, it's hard to say if I prefer this or 2016 now, and that's saying something since Doom 2016 has been my GOTG.

Bought the game recently but didn't started it yet. At launch, the devs said they'll add raytracing, which would be a good match for my 3080.

But haven't heard anything regarding raytracing ever since, so I guess it's not going to happen.

I’m trying to fight the gladiator, got him down to 10% health or so and then he just stopped taking damage. Apparently there’s a bug? Do I just reload the save and try again ?

I got a decent weapon wheel-less setup for controller going on PC using Razer Wolverine Ultimate controller and reWASD button remapper. Even with an advance controller the weapon wheel holds you back significantly.

Tried out a different approach to 120fps with 1080p DLSS(Quality), RT 'On', 'Ultra'/'Ultra Nightmare' settings mix, in particular 'Ultra Nightmare' Motion Blur quality and amount, and 'Ultra Nightmare' texture filtering. A few other tweaks here and there. I really like end result it's like a candy shop for your eyes. I prefer it to the 1440p DLSS(Perf), Ultra/High mix I was using to get to 120fps RT earlier.

I played this a lot last year and moved on, but after the Ray-tracing update decided to hop into the Ancient Gods expansion after the long hiatus. Holy shit am I rusty but also holy shit is this fun.

The RT+DLSS upgrade makes the game feel fresh again. Did a playthrough of Eternal, then today I finally got around to buying the Season Pass with both Ancient Gods DLCs. I almost jumped in, but GP PC was being a bitch with Season Pass not activating on the Eternal install on a secondary SSD. Got it to work, but I decided to mop up on some base game collectibles and upgrades a little. Gonna try Ancient Gods here in a bit. Pretty stoked!

*edit* Oh my fucking goodness, there are soooo many demons. Holy shit.
