Handsome men and beautiful women in video games are a good thing and you shouldn't feel ashamed for supporting it

It's a known fact that handsome men and beautiful women are part of the real world. They are not exclusive to Hollywood movies, television, and video games. But just as well there are also ugly or weird, if not normal looking people (the so-called everyman) and we shouldn't forget this. That said, I feel that a more realistic video game means we will continue to see attractive men and beautiful women featured in them (and in most cases playing as them) and often the traditionally less attractive characters will be relegated to the background. I think the main reason for this is obviously because attractive people catch our eye and so we remember them a little more if you go by just their appearance alone. Certainly there are women who play a video game and maybe daydream about being rescued by Leon S. Kennedy or Chris Redfield with his boulder biceps and can you really blame them? No. So why then is it that some of you talk down to your fellow gamers for wanting to see and play as attractive women in video games? What about the guy who enjoys playing an RPG as a female character and wants to make them look beautiful? There's nothing wrong with that.

Let me put it like this, if you were to create or commission a talented game developer to create your video game and you already know in your head or on paper what the characters should look like, isn't it safe to say they would likely be good looking characters? I'm not saying the virtual women would necessarily have big breasts or big hips or long glamorous hair but I'm sure there are women who enjoy playing as beautiful female characters. I mean, I don't think women are so different if you really think about it - both genders appreciate traditionally attractive looking characters, be it from movies, video games, television and books. We are not so different.
Maybe someone wants to play a character that looks equipped and proper for their role in game. Like a female warrior that actually looks like a warrior with proper platemail, not fake ass boobmail or barely clothed...while having the muscles required to actually use the weapon they are using.

It is treated differently, we don't see as many barechested guys or guys set up as eye candy for gay or women desires.

The reason SJWs (and yes SJWism is a very much a female minded movement) dislike beautiful women depicted is that it makes them feel inferior. This is because women compete for males based largely on beauty. Men don't compete as much on looks so don't care that x guy is beefier than they are.

And yes I agree with OP people are attracted to beauty so there is nothing wrong with it at all.

Absolutely. Looking at aesthetically pleasing things is nice and since gaming involves a whole lot of looking, like movies, the main actors should look good with few purposeful exceptions.

If that was the case with men, we wouldn't have had BluRayHighDef.

Devs are free to make ugly or bland characters. I should be free to not like them and say so.

Just like devs should be free to make attractive, sexy characters and not be harassed for it. Beauty isn’t offensive.

If the appearance of the MC hampers my enjoyment of a game, that’s on me, but I’m not going to complain online and ask that everyone conforms to my taste.

I like how they wanted a soccer mom because "representation" or some shit but they also gave her two different colored eyes because, wow, that looks unusual and cool. They even have these close-up shots (because why would you do such a close up on a soccer mom's face) so there is no way you will miss it.
There are some really nice soccer moms out there, unfortunately this is not one of them.

Basically don't care about good or bad looking, as long the character is interesting and well designed.
Would appreciate more imperfect and average looking characters though, just because beautiful characters are so overused.
Give me gritty, weird, not beautiful characters with charme.

I definitely agree with the OP. I look at it this way. If movies, novels, television, the music industry, commercials, news anchors, social media, etc can have beautiful women and handsome men, why not video games?

Developers can make whatever they want though and I’ll play a game with ugly or attractive characters though. Doesn’t really bother me that much. I always found it hypocritical that movies and tv shows for example look for the most attractive people, but game females should look grounded or average. Japanese developers still know how to make feminine and beautiful women though.

What do you mean exactly? There's always been plenty of sexy guys in gaming, only a person who flat out hates men would decree that only sexy women need to be removed from games.

Sexy people are cool, sexy is cool, sexy is fun, only an asshole would want gaming to be less sexy.
I mean guys in a game like Red Dead Redemption 2, wearing assless chaps and thongs only and built like a twink.

The problem that some people here not understand(or try to not understand), is that everything was normal until clowns trying to dictate what you should like or not.

Remember the Dragons Crown case. Clowns were making a fuss to the point of even agreeing that if you like that design you're a pedo.

What about that guy(don't remember if it was Druckman) doing lecture saying that all sexy, beautifull or anime characters were wrong?

Thats the point right here. People saying you're wrong for liking or dislking a character. LOU2 is a perfect example here too, because I'm forced to like Abby, because if not I'm homophobe.

If someone ask me what I would prefer, I would sure say I like pretty characters. But its not like its mandatory and I don't have problem with other designs eithers.

Funny thing is that my wife who doesn't game has noticed this trend as well. I was playing Ghost of Tsushima in front of her and she made the comment that Yuna should have been more attractive.

Women like to see attractive character rolls as well. What constitutes attractive to a woman vs a man maybe different, but it's not "what's inside that matters". That's why Hollywood (and pretty much any film industry across the world) is filled with attractive actors and actresses.

It's once again men in the industry dictating what women should look like, but this time it's not like a model, but Golum instead.

Most soccer moms I know are hot. This lady is a horse.

Handsome people are a minority, why is it OK to marginalize them?
Wrong. Attractiveness is average, basically a 7-8. So if you judge handsome/attractive as greater than a 6 then the majority of the world is attractive. Ugliness is a minority. The issue with looks is a lot of attractive people get fat which masks their looks and gives the false impression that there are more ugly people in the world.

Both of these images resemble the average male and female face across the world. All are pretty/handsome with regards to their race.

Games that chose to assume "Normal" people are ugly are doing so with no regard to reality. Normal people are pretty.

BTW, Netherlands, Brazil, Lebenon, and Ukraine got it fucking going on man. Straight smoke shows up in those countries. US is full of girl next door types it seems.

Heh.. I get a kick out of the "Let the devs do what they want, but stop complaining about hotties and harassing devs for putting them in games."

In a thread complaining uggos in games.. on a forum full of at least monthly if not more threads complaining about uggos in games.. and as of late, there has been plenty of harassing of devs for this as well (Naughty Dog.)

The coin flips both ways here; if you support devs having the artistic freedom and don't like people complaining.. well

Nothing terribly wrong with having a preference; I still think it's kind of weird that people would actually not play a GAME... because of ugly characters.. well.. really.. it's only ugly women anyone ever cares about. The inclusion of "handsome" in this thread is rather hilarious as I literally have never heard of anyone complaining about ugly men in games lol

This thread is a joke! Like who REALLY is ashamed for liking games with good looking characters? It's a red-herring. That's never been an issue. The issue or question is...........are YOU willing to like a game with an unattractive main character?

I HATE PANDERING...but i want you to pander to myself.
That's how silly the OP reads.

Protagonists don't need to be pretty or ugly, they only need to be interesting.

No it doesn't. For every beautiful person you see on the street or in a club there are 5-10 service workers in that same economy who aren't beautiful.
Receipts?

Or do you think those beautiful people in the club can't also be service workers?

Also, why service workers, lol? Is there some inherent rule that says service workers and low income earners have to be ugly? WTF?

I'm sure you're posting this due to many of the recent hot takes from journalists, who seem to have this belief that there's an army of incel men who just hate women in video games. People like this just thrive on creating imaginary narratives, the same narratives that supported the gaslighting of gamers during that gate of gamers thing.

Developers make games with women, especially attractive women, because men do enjoy playing as them, and not necessarily because the target market is female gamers. The fact that women become more inclined to play them, however, is just a positive side effect for profit. Phil Spencer might tell himself he's making games to promote diversity, but this is just post-rationalization for expanding the target market: It's good for business.

Jobs that are frequently discriminated against will often be assumed to be filled with ugly people.

My answer is dependent on the characterization. Abby ruined The Last of Us 2 for me for a lot of reasons. One is the way she looks. I just don't find playing as her pleasing in any way. That said I am enjoying control, and Jesse is one weird looking chick in that game. Doesn't bother me at all.

Personally I find women who body build to the extreme lengths Abby does to be off putting. Its about the least attractive thing a woman can do to herself outside of morbid obesity. That said, I do find athletic fit women hot so long as their femininity is retained. That's just my personal opinion, and what I look for in women, and the things I want in games are based on my likes. I mean, why wouldn't they be? It has nothing to do with jerking off, or sex, it is entirely based on my enjoyment of simply viewing pretty things. I don't really like ugly stuff unless its an enemy, or secondary character. If I am going to stare at the main for hours and hours I want it to be pleasing.

The main reason Abby ruined the game for me is a spoiler though.

I'm hoping we're starting to see a turning of the tide against these assholes who shame people around them. I was on Gaf when the self-righteous pricks ruled the roost and swung their holier-than-thou hammers at every game creator who dared to feature a sexy lady. Cheering alongside the likes of Kotaku, Polygon and whatever other puritanical blog was out there. I think every iteration of Ivy from soul caliber resulted in pitchforks and women bashing (which is not misogynistic if it's against pretty women by their rules). Thats problematic. Thats pernicious. Man it was everywhere here back then.

Realistic/Believable always looks best. Boobplate armour is dumb.

I prefer a more relevant looking to the game/lore.

Japanese games with near-naked girls or pansy males beating brutes don't click with me.
I think we'd see a lot less complaints if we had more designs like this and the return of the Conan type design for brute warrior males (and very similar for females who are beserker type warriors). Make it less one sided and dumb.

Yup, a tough woman is more convincing for melee games.

Steroid makes everything possible. :lollipop_tears_of_joy:
