Death Stranding has generated over €23 million on PC, Control generated €16 million in 2020

Tag, you're it.
Death Stranding came out on PC in July 2020, meaning that it took it five months in order to hit these sales.

Digital Bros also claimed that Control generated €16 million in 2020. Assetto Corsa generated almost €9 million and Ghostrunner generated around €7 million.
Death Stranding is using the Decima Engine and performs incredibly well on PC. Kojima Productions has also added support for DLSS 2.0 via a post-launch update.
The game also has Very Positive reviews on Steam right now.

I November 2019, Digital Bros expected Death Stranding PC to generate €50 million in total revenue.

I imagine DS total sales would have to be north of 30 million at this point? With 5 on each console? Not bad.

I'm happy that so many people bought the game! I know it is very controversial to many but it is a wonderful game to me and it is really cool that such a unique approach could find such widespread success.

Kojima does it again!

How likely is that €50m target then? I’d guess unlikely, or does this game show long legs in the charts?

I think you are reading this info wrong, or i'm reading your post wrong.
This generated money means around 500k copies sold in 5 months, while Horizon Zero Dawn sold nearly 800k copies in its first month on Steam, and has sold over 2mil copies on Steam now, and roughly 3mil sales on PC total, for example.
Death Stranding hasnt done well at all.

Again, unless i'm reading your post wrong.

Kojima knows his PC audience. See fellow japanese devs, its not that hard put a good port out and the PC fanbase will buy it in droves. Hopefully Konami takes note and releases an amazing MGS Legacy collection on PC someday.

I loved the game a great deal, so this makes me very happy to see! Sure, it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for me, especially at the time, it had some incredibly memorable moments.

Incredible game for me!
Metal Gear Solid is my favorite series and this game more or less lived up to the legacy for me. Most brilliant was it's use of music.
The atmosphere is thick, so it's a world you become enveloped in. I'd have preferred a bit more in-depth combat, and I'd like to try the harder difficulty that was implemented for the PC edition. That said, I did have a few pretty memorable encounters, so there was just enough action to keep me pleased with the experience as a whole.

These are pretty bad numbers. Just goes to show how small of a market PC really is when it comes to AAA games.

23 million means it sold less than 500k copies at full prince in six months.

It's at least 650,000 I'd say. Convert to USD, and then take into account their revenue is not the full price of the game.

And it's a port of a 6 month old game from a developer more popular on consoles. It's a nice supplemental income, but not sure how it's somehow indicative of the overall AAA PC gaming market.

Witcher 3 for instance sold well over 12 million on PC, more than any other platform... and had the best legs on PC too, which is how it eventually toppled the PS4 version in sales. Lots of PC games get re-vitalized by mods or patches or discounts. PC gamers are less likely to buy a $60 game at release but it's still a massive market.

I think part of the problem is delaying PC releases. They need to come out the same day and date as the others. PC gamers are also used to sales. Most won't bite at full price. Still, 23 million in sales is better than none. That's still a healthy amount of money and worth putting the effort into releasing on PC.

That said, it's one of the few games I played for 20 hours and quit. I just didn't care about the story and the gameplay felt more like a chore than actually being fun. Not a popular opinion but Kojima needs a filter/editor...

That helps for sure but Monster Hunter World still sold something like 6 million on PC. I think some games just vibe with the PC audience and others do not to the same extent. I did expect Death Stranding to do better but maybe Kojima just doesn’t have the same clout with PC gamers. I’m sure it will still do fine when all is said and done though.

Nah PC has more 5+mil selling games than all the consoles put together. HZD for example has been n the market less time, and has sold 4 times as much as DS, on Steam alone.
Its a simple fact of the game coming later, and PC users seeing the general concensous of the game, months after release (boring game, Fed Ex simulator, etc).

DS sure wasn't the most perfect game, but it was still an awesome game and a cool change from all the usual generic panpan boumboum open world games. Thanks to Andrew House that allowed Kojima to create this amazing game, and of course thanks to Kojima and his team for the game.

Man that explains why Kojima Pro loves the PC community so much. They have discovered that PC is a goldmine

And then you hear "but games are too expensive to make" with this kind of money you can more than comfortably fund an exclusive, even on PC.

Lol, AAA games sell just fine on PC, Witcher 3 sold way more on PC than on consoles.

Maybe just don't release your game 1 year later when no one gives a shit anymore.

That's pretty decent, at least we can see that Death Stranding has generated enough revenue overall to cover the production costs combined with PS4 which should be much higher. Can't wait for Kojima's next project, hopefully not a horror game.

Very much looking forward to the next "strand game" from KojiPro. Hayters gonna hayte tho.

its most likely his game will be on PC day one now, considering they has been making exclusive contents for the Steam version of the game

Kind of hard to tell just how successful without knowing how much development cost was. We have people here saying 100 million but what is that based on? Are there any hard numbers?

Keep in mind they stated in May 2020 that the game had already recouped enough costs to turn a profit. This was announced a year ago.

Incredible game, I loved it. Maybe not the type of experience you want do qith AAA budget. I think same concept but less expensive woul've worked better for the IP and the relationship between Kojima and publishers. I know that it's easier to tell now, they bet on the Kojima name and the hype around actors and new ip. Even MGS didn't sell extremely high numebrs of copies, so spending so much on a project so uncommon was a risky move.
I'm glad they took that risk, it's sad to see that it did't set the world on fire. I enjoyed my time with the game so much, I think it was fresh, beautiful and very interesting to play.

Agreed.

Some people on other sites are proclaiming this as a great figures, but to put things in perspective, God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn were said to have generated $500M and $400M a piece on PS4.

Yes, GOW generated 500 million by the end of 2019.... probably 700 to 800 by now. Maybe more but it's speculation on my part.

I really feel many on the other site just agree with the popular opinion in fear of being banned for 'wrong think'. I barely ever see any dissenting opinion...

Kojima always had a soft spot for PC gaming. Although I'm not so sure if we'll see a day one PC release alongside consoles.
I can see it being no later than a couple years out as usual. Maybe even moving things up to a one year grace period.
The PC port for Death Stranding seemed to be pretty solid, even making use of DLSS 2.0 and running well above 60 fps.

Alongside DS and his recent foray into horror games, I'm just happy to see Kojima find success in making new IPs instead of perpetually making MGS sequels until he dies :messenger_grinning_smiling:

TLOU2 cost about 200 million.

Death Stranding was probably the bones of 100 million. 50 Million at the very least...
Yeah, i already know the budgets those games thread, mi point is that with 25M you could easily fund something like most small console exclusives , like Returnal or The Medium, if not, where the fuck is the money going to?

70 digital bucks seems like overkill when you are making games aiming to sell at least 2M copies.

This doesn't sound that great honestly. But if were talking about some extra cash for these companies I guess it is a good thing.
