If im not mistaken, Death Stranding covered the development costs even before launching on PC. So this seems to be all extra gravy for them.

Fake Edit: Yup...

In a new interview with Livedoor News, Hideo Kojima states that not only has Death Stranding on the PlayStation 4 been profitable and recouped its development costs, the project’s revenue has allowed the developer to secure enough profit for its next title. This comes as PC fans wait for the game to be released to Steam and the Epic Games Store on July 14th.

Very bad number for Death Stranding as the publisher sales target is at $50M. Which means it sold around 500K at best on PC.

Yet we still have (a few) folks saying bomba lol

Death Stranding was not only an entirely original new IP, it was a new IP developed in more than 3 years. With a newly reformed dev team working with a completely new game engine.
A game featuring notably unconventional game mechanics and controls. Which I'd imagine was never designed to universally appeal to the widest audience possible.
Not everything is meant to be for everyone, and that's one of the things I love most about video games, both as a consumer and an art lover.

I wish to see even more publishers & reputable game designers in the AAA space take more risks creating original titles with more inspired approaches to game design.
Game engines and platforms have reached a point where we're seeing technically impressive work from smaller and smaller teams with access to increasingly sophisticated creative and development tools. Sometimes even with the financial support from 1st party publishers.
Gaming as a whole is on an interesting trajectory, and I'm certainly happy a game like Death Stranding gets to exist and find an audience in the AAA space.

I was frankly pretty disappointed with Death Stranding. Probably just because I overhyped myself on the trailers prior to launch. I'd say it was an interesting and inventive game, but not necessarily a good one.

Honestly, the numbers aren't bad. It's just low for Sony because they often have games that sell millions of copies within 3 days. But the they already recovered their costs on ps4 anyway. Just porting costs at this point.

Congratulations Kojima, please give a PS5 upgrade with full Dual Sense support AND Astrobot fidelity and unearthly BT sounds with 3d Audio

505 games is the publisher this time, and their sales target for Death Stranding is $50M.

True. I should have elaborated in that post more. I was always curious why Sony never unveiled the sales numbers for this game. This somewhat answered that question.

I'm curious what 505s target was? I guess revenue target since units weren't provided.

EDIT- You answered above. Do you have link quoting this target?

How is just recouping cost good enough for a investors these days?

Think about it. They are supposed to invest about 100million over a course of 5-7 years just to get it back? Just keeping it in bank account would earn more than this. Not to mention the risk of it turning Cyberpunk.

It has to earn substantially more than development cost to be worthwhile.

Did u read the full quote? It says it recouped the development cost, plus made enough profit to fund the next project.

And that before the game released on PC, the game kept on selling and bringing money since that interview. That intervew was from June 2020.

What do you expect Kojima to say about his own project in an interview?

It would have been better if publisher had said that. But Sony said complete opposite of that actually.

They even mentioned it stopped selling well once initial hype died down.

So >500k copies sold? That’s solid for a late port of a game that while brilliant, isn’t for many people. So I would say the port effort was most definitely worth it.
