CD Projekt committed to fixing Cyberpunk 2077 so it can sell 'for years'

Video games maker CD Projekt has no plans to shelve Cyberpunk 2077 and is committed to fixing glitches to make its flagship game a long-term success after a troubled rollout, joint chief executive Adam Kicinski told Reuters.

Kicinski said CD Projekt was in touch with Sony, which pulled Cyberpunk 2077 from its PlayStation Store only a week after its debut in December amid complaints of glitches in the video game.

The role-playing game, billed as an “open-world, action-adventure story set in ... a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification” and featuring Hollywood star Keanu Reeves, was delayed three times before its debut.

“I don’t see an option to shelve Cyberpunk 2077. We are convinced that we can bring the game to such a state that we can be proud of it and therefore successfully sell it for years to come,” Kicinski said.

CD Projekt released a patch for Cyberpunk 2077 last month, and Kicinski said the new 1.2 patch was a step towards the game’s return to the PlayStation store and that the Polish games maker had “friendly relations” with Sony.

Cyberpunk 2077 had been CD Projekt’s most-anticipated game since 2015’s “The Witcher: Wild Hunt”.

Last month the company also unexpectedly cancelled plans to develop a standalone multi-player version of Cyberpunk 2077.

Kicinski said that the format is more risky for the company, which has to date focused on single-player games.

In another setback, CD Projekt was hit by a cyber attack in February. Kicinski said the company did not lose any data in the attack, which was caused by a hole in an external software, and it led to only a 2-3 week delay to its development work.

Kicinski, who has worked at CD Projekt since it was founded nearly three decades ago, said the company is looking for acquisition opportunities as it embarks on a “fundamental” change to be able to develop two high-budget games in parallel from next year. Acquisitions would not be aimed at boosting financial results and would not be restricted to any geographical locations, he said.

He also said that since hostile takeovers cannot be fully ruled out in the gaming industry, the company took steps a few years ago to reduce the risk of becoming a takeover target, including capping a shareholder’s voting rights to 20%.

CD Projekt faces class action lawsuits in the United States following the troubled Cyberpunk debut, and Kicinski said the company is represented by Cooley LLP law firm.

In one of those cases, CD Projekt said on Friday that legal claims against the company in the United States regarding the terms of distribution deals with Valve Corp. had now been withdrawn.

I hope they do fix the game. I've been playing it on PC since the latest patch. While it still needs work to be done, I'm enjoying the fuck out of this beautiful looking game.

Sorry Adam, I think that ship has sailed. The reputation of the game and the studio have been soiled too much for you to ever be able to sell the game at the levels initially forecasted, without deep, deep price cuts. People have moved on and largely forgotten about it. It won't have legs like TW3.

Hahaha, it's hilarious he says the acquisitions aren't aimed at improving financials. Who does he think he's fooling? They're a company for christ sake! A publicly traded one too, at that.

You cant fix something that is so broken. Just finish patching it and start working on a proper CP2 with actual development time

always chasing the next thrill

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I'm the queen
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I've tried
Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know
Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don't care what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway
It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me can't get to me at all
It's time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I'm free
Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry
Here I stand and here I stay
Let the storm rage on
My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back, the past is in the past
Let it go, let it go
When I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

I really hope the lessons they learned with the fiasco that was Cyberpunk benefits The Witcher 4's development and marketing. Due to that i don't expect TW4 before the end of this gen.

That should have been addressed before having the game available for the public to spend money on.

In some twisted way I kind of hope this game crashes catastrophically, just to warn other publishers.

But people have short memory, so I just hope they'll get their shit together and never lie to their customers again.

They have no choice because they are being sued.

Cyberpunk is a depressing game. I played it about 2/3 of the way through and I will say that the characters and some of the stories were memorable, which is a good thing, but the insertion of Keanu Reeves into it (instead of carrying on with Jackie as was intended) really hurt it -- And it also robbed the game of a defense when it came out in such poor condition, as it was such a blatant cash grab.

To have such a lack of integrity plastered all over the game, from a studio who was famous for having integrity, is something I don't think anyone could come back from.
All the updates do now is seem cloying, and that's not a good look either. Updates for a game should improve it, but here they're just there so the public can watch it crawl, broken towards a finish line that it will never get to, because what was promised was clearly bullshit. Just abandon it. Oh you can't, you're being sued.... It's a horrible situation for them and the general public. I'm just glad some people enjoyed it.

good. it's a shame that whiny console fans spat out their dummies and ruined the reputation of the game and CDPR. the game has problems yeah i ain't denying it but i've played much worse games over the years. there is something special with Cyberpunk and if they can squash the bugs, add some new features/QoL changes, and add a shit load of content with expansions (basically what they would've done anyway...) then the game will be fantastic and no doubt will sell for years. i don't see any other good cyberpunk genre games (no, Deus Ex doesn't count) and apart from CDPR i don't see any other studios planning on making a AAA cyberpunk genre game.

This current snafu kind of reminds of the MDR failboat with Desert Tech a couple years back. They really hyped up the gun and on paper it looked phenomenal, but they'd never done something so ambitious (semi-auto bullpup) at such a scale before, so the delivery was a colossal failure. Tons and tons of issues. But instead of abandoning the product, DT double down on fixing everything and instantly granted all owners a life time warranty and free access to all upgrades/fixes to the rifle over the years. Just had to ship it back and they'd fix it for free. Fast forward a couple years and the MDRX has hit the streets which incorporates all prior updates + some new stuff.

I know that story has nothing to do with games, but I do think that the optimal move for companies, in particular prior industry darlings, is to double or triple down on fixing the mistake and restoring their reputation of quality. Yeah, the stink for the brand will cling for a few years- but a great product lasting many years will outlast that controversy, and the story of how they fixed it will become in time a gold star to their name.

The thing is this isn't new for CDPR, Witcher 1, 2, and 3 were buggy as could be at launch. The difference is the core game was there, whereas with Cyberpunk, it just isn't what they promised at all.

It is weird how gamers are.

The retail game got a big discount in Brasil on PS4... it is around R$50 (it was launched at R$299) and a lot of gamers is buying it saying the issues are overstated and it is perfectly fine to playable even before the patch 1.2.

Gamers are the first reason developers release games in these bad state.

I don’t see it Kicinski. The game is fundamentally broken that you need a full game work to fix it.

I think it's safe to say Cyberpunk 2077 obliterated the genre from every AAA project in the works for the next 10 years at minimum. No one will touch this again now.

Also, whiny console players were sold a game that still doesn't exist, and that only now it's maybe starting to sort of function on a fundamental level.

PC master race got amnesia or you took off to your imaginary planet I see. Let me bring you back to planet earth. The game was a buggy mess even on PC. CDPR deserve every bad press they got not because of the bugs but how they lied about everything to that point. Also Cyberpunk problems go beyond just the bugs. It rooted in the game design. Things they can’t simply “fix”.

game is good, just not excellent in any regard..it's a so-so rpg and a so-so open world game...and it's a little too unfocused for the cinematic linear story crowd.

i'm sure game could still sell some more when completely bug free and with some discounts, but i don't think they can make the game as good as it would need to be to "sell for years"

Its a game for a pretty starved setting. Whenever someone asks for an "open world cyberpunk", "open world cyberpunk rpg" or even "open world sci-fi", Cyberpunk 2077 name will always come up along very few others. And the game isn't necessarely bad as you just said.

As such, i do think it has potential to sell for a long time, until someone comes along and makes a similar title which would definitely still take a while.

That is the business model now a day. Launch something broke and fix it over the years as if you are making a favor to the gamers. (And if this doesn't work, well...Anthem)
