Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I find games that are like Ed Wood movies - they're so bad they cross that threshold and suddenly become good.

Just like for the unintentionally funny '80s and '90s "vhs horror" I have a soft spot for ultra janky action-adventure games.

So as I wait for "daymare 1998" to go on sale, and because it's weekend on GAF - I'd like to take this opportunity to recommend you a really shit game I liked and invite you to do the same.

When you do, make sure to say why you think your picks are worth checking despite the obvious.

Hoping to see some of your STEAM shovelware gems!

Now, imagine a school project made by 5 people trying to make The Last of Us clone. For PC only.

Introducing:
POTENTIA.

I beat it and I've had a blast. I don't remember laughing this hard while playing a video game, it really is a lot of fun despite being all kinds of horrible.

The GOOD:

- Dead enemies don't lose collision! They remain as rigid bodies you can step on and walk over. That's way better tech than, say, Resident Evil 2 Remake, where you just clip right through everything you shot as you walk.
- Enemies have hit reactions on models with blood effects, really bad but still makes shooting feel superior to something like Shadow of Tomb Raider. Shooting is OK and it's easily the least shit no.1 thing they focused on in production.
- it's less than 2 hours long.
- Fighting small groups works ok despite being easy to cheese, better than I thought!
- Stealth and Melee mechanics with a crowbar. Sometimes work as intended, despite enemies spotting you when they shouldn't.
- Multiple weapons - guns, rifles, bow.
- Only a couple of "boss" bullet sponge enemies.

The BAD as in REAL BAD:

- Complete nonsense story and characters. Insanely bad writing. You're a dude in post world war/apocalypse fighting bad gang dudes to take care of your Russian wife. That final twist man...
- Totally broken "cover" mechanic... As if they were trying to make one but dropped halfway there. Can hide behind stuff but can't pop out. Combat kind of works early on but totally goes to shit later with large enemy numbers because of this.
- Changing weapons and reloading is the no.1 reason to get you killed later on.
- Retarded companion AI breaking your stealth. Has unlimited ammo and works ok as a human shield tho.
- Absolutely pointless garbage collectibles - "notes" saying random, totally unrelated shit like "we were here. John".

The UGLY but AWESOME:

- Worst of all time voice acting. Seriously, it's just next-level bad. But that's what makes the game so funny so at the end, that's the key, unintentional positive making POTENTIA an instant shit game classic!

As I said, I've had a great time playing. Got one of those? Share!

Quite janky & buggy but oh so awesome!

Struggling to think of another example that fits your thread better, so yeah, Alpha Protocal is my pick for now.

I've seen a lot of praise for it here but missed it myself. Never too late!

Earth Defense Force 4.1.

It's janky trash but I just find it fun for some reason.
ehh, I have to say that the recent Earth Defense Force games do have good controls. It still has that trashy B-movie vibe, but mechanically it is quite decent.

Easy - Combat Arms ...

Haven’t played it in years - mindless fun though.

Had a level called death room - 2 rooms next to each other. 2 doors connecting - and a set of stairs leading up to a connecting hallway over the doors to another set of stairs to the other room.

You died a lot.

Used to spam mines on the stair steps on the other side - would get 70+ kills.

Then they nerfed the mines.

Playing MUA3 and I like it. It’s not the best. It shouldn’t work so well combat is shallow but I’m having a blast.

i understand it isn’t a shit game. But rather it could be a lot better.

NO PAIN TRANCE CONTINUE
C'mon, Alpha Protocol isn't a shit game. Yes it has its issues, but at the same it's an incredibly good action RPG with some actual non-linearity. I wish it got a remaster or a remake.

Well that's basically what I said. Loved it to death and yes, a proper remake/remaster would indeed be very welcome! Then again, the issues it has was part of the experience and very easy to look past due to what you mentioned. Very charming videogame.

I guess I took some liberty regarding OP's intention and made it into 'games with issues you still loved to play'. My bad <3

Yeah It was around the time the Xbone was around for maybe less than a year I started to look for 360 gems I've missed. This was one of them. I'd say give it a chance!

Wanted Weapons of Fate. The game is pretty bad, uninspired short linear levels, horrible writing, basic 3rd person shooting action.

The gimmick, however, was pretty fun and never got old enough for me to stop playing. You could slow down time and indirectly kill enemies because you could curve bullets witch was a super satisfying mechanic

Kane and lynch 2 was alright.
I had fun.
It didn’t reinvent the wheel.

Doom 2016 on the switch

because 30fps and low resolution means it can’t be good?
But I loved it.
Yeah. All you graphics/frame rate junkies.
Mwwhahaga. I loved it. I want more.

I bought wolfenstein 2 and I’ll get doom eternal as well. Don’t test me. 😂😂

Never liked a “shit” game... but I do like some that other just didn’t “get”

Like this marvel that was generally panned

trespasser-1.jpg

Not sure how any who played this could have not been floored by the physics. I was so impressed by the demo that I bought this one full price without reading any reviews. So when I saw they were negative I was surprised. I mean yes, the box stacking bits could get frustrating but one you got use to the floppy appendage it was easy.

Some cool ideas (open world Silent Hill, sidequests), some bad ones (enemy design, combat), technically not exactly great but gets the job done, decent enough plot, all in all, better than Homecoming by a long shot. I enjoyed it.

I think this thread is a great idea, perfect for people who enjoyed The Last of Us 2 to have a chat about it.

As for me I have always enjoyed Blue Reflection on PS4, its one of those JRPG's that feels like it's stuck in a world of fhe PS2 mechanic wise as the characters feel stiff to control and the animations feel stiff to... but I dunno maybe due to its somewhat unique premise and great music I really enjoyed my time with it.

Terminator : Resistance was panned by the gaming press. However, it got a much better reception on Steam.

I decided to take a chance on it, and thought it was actually pretty decent. Not mindblowing, but not nearly as awful as many a journalist made it out to be.

So, typical Gust JRPG?

I personally found most PS2 era JRPGs to hit the sweet spot of complexity and game mechanics so saying that a game is stuck in that world isn't really a negative to me. I'll definitely check this out. I wonder if the PC port is decent or should I stick with the PS4 version?

I think the journos are wrong with this one by being very harsh, but I will admit you have to be a Terminator fan to appreciate the game. If this was some random sci-fi shooter I wouldn't even play it.

Not a good game at all, but it is kinda fun to play, the weapons are cool, the setting is cool. The story and dialogue were much better utilized in the predecessors and in general, it's not much except fucking around in a sandbox with your jetpack, weapons, and alien abilities. It does a decent job at that, but it's very barebones otherwise, it's also very repetitive and technically below average

Still, I had fun with this, lol :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Haha, OP, I watched ATP play that game. What a dumb fun mess. So many laughs were had, haha.

It's a lot like those old drive-in shlockfests both in gore and quality. Granted I haven't played it in 10 years but I remember it being a good time.
Dude, I just love Splatterhouse so damn much, I had to love it regardless. I had dumb fun with it. Loved all the nods and throwbacks too. Id love a darker and more serious iteration. I really wish they'd revisit the IP. But I doubt they ever will. 😔

Minority Report was my guilty pleasure for a long time. It's a STUPID but very fun game because it has extremely destructible environments, and absurd physics. The ragdoll itself is beyond comical. There's also a cheat where you can press L3 and you just go ragdoll. If you jump and press the button at the right time you LAUNCH your limp noodle body across the level, lol. It's on PS2, GC, and Xbox.

I just remembered there's a rooftop stage where you can throw enemies off, and they'll periodically yell, "I'm falling!" Lmao.
