Surprised I didn’t find a post on this.

Isn’t it true that there is no Johnny Cage because he wasn’t unfortunate enough to be born a white male? And even though the game is a tournament fighter there is actually no tournament present in this movie?

I'd give the movie a 6/10. The best parts are the famous moves from the games and the fatalities. Really fun to see them on the big screen. The worst part of the movie is the soundtrack. It's like a super generic mix of fantasy music, action music and bass drops from the sounds effects library.

I strongly dislike Liu Kang in this movie. It's either very poor acting or someone actually wanted the character to be overdramatic in all of the scenes (especially the earliest ones when we meet him). At least he got some cool moves to show, but I still don't like him compared to Liu Kang from the original film who was one of the best characters.

The story isn't the worst, but some boring plots get too much time and some good plots not enough. Also I felt like it ended the soon, lacked a proper ending. It's like they're hinting they're going to continue in 'chapter 2' or whatever.

I'll put the rest in the spoiler...
The movie has too many different characters. I mean you have a guy like Kabal and he doesn't even get a proper origin story in the movie. Instead you have the character to do a short recap for the viewer who he is (lol).
The idea of making a MK movie without the actual tournament (because Shang Tsung wants to take the easy way) is weird. I wouldn't say I hate it, but I hoped for Raiden to teach Shang some manners and agree for an honorable tournament anyway - nope.
You fucking spend money on a CGI reptilian, but don't use the opportunity to have Reptile in your film? The fuck? Reptile being announced is the most memorable scene from the original film. How the hell they didn't use that for fanservice purposes?

As for the characters:
Shang Tsung and Raiden are okay for most part. I had to warm up to Raiden though.
Sonya is good, Jax is meh. How he gets his replacement hands absolutely makes no sense.
Kano is uneven. For a lot of the movie he's the resident clown who swears a lot, but he's had some decent moments as well.
Cole is mehish and that's not good for one of the main characters in the film.
Scorpion and Sub Zero are cool, but I don't like dividing them into a hero and a villain. I liked them from the original movie when they worked together under Shang Tsung.
Kung Lao is decent. He gets probably the best fatality in the movie.
Goro was disappointing. It's almost like Cole was fighting a monster and not an intelligent being. Goro from the original film might have looked silly, but he's had some good lines and facial expressions.
Mileena was forgettable. Not good for a reasonably important character from the games.
Nitara, Reiko - who the fuck are they? Also horrible acting from the guy playing Reiko.

Hard to recommend that one. I appreciate the effort and I hope they get a chance to improve, but the first film is better.

Looks good enough to watch.

Looked up the run time and it's under 2 hours. I'm cool with that. There's way too many self indulgent shitty movies nowadays that end up being 2+ hours long. If it ends up sucking I won't feel too bad about it, at least the action looks solid.

The editing/cut is the worst part for me. They jump from one scene to another way too quick, good example for this is when Kano, Sonya and Cole jump from the plane. It's 3 cuts, the jump... then you see them flying with their chutes (from a distance) and then they're walking around seemingly hours after they landed. I typically don't pay that much attention to things like this but in this one it was really jarring.

Otherwise I'd say I agree with your points. This is a guilty pleasure for fans but overall it's trash.

Just finished watching it.
It has it's issues, plenty of them in fact.. but by the end I was really enjoying myself and looking forward to another movie.
I love the one of the movie and that they seem to understand the bulk of their fanbases is now over 40 and they played the movie to that base.

I'd give it an 8/10 , damn good time with some truly epic fights (though many fights were too fast and meh)

Fun film, leaned heavily on Mortal Kombat fan service, so much so that it's a detriment to the film for folks who don't really care about the game.

But it's a must see if you like the game or the previous cheesefest films.

New guy wasn't too shit either and fits into the universe.

Is the only option available to pay $25 to stream it? That's a hefty price. I usually watch new films for about $10-$12 in theatres.

Yeah this was horrible and a 3/10 for me. Feel sorry anybody paying for this. It's such a weird move from the producers and script writers, also this doesn't feel like a 90 million movie in terms of budget. Feels like a low rent-straight to video thing (I KNOW I KNOW HBO MAX), and all they had to do was just adapt Scorpion's Revenge and add maybe an extra 40-50 minutes of plot to fill out the quickness of that animated feature.

Also holy shit, the guy who was playing Lord Raiden felt like just reading the script out loud. Kung Lau, and Liu Kang the same - just fucking horrible and vapid beyond belief
The fact that Hanzo did not speak or understand Bi-Han was hilarious, and made the end fight also hilarious since technically nobody could understand anybody.
Movie felt empty in terms of environments, where either it was COVID, or the producers being morons and decided to just throw 2/3rds of the movie into a canyon for shits and giggles.
Outworld being just one road, and a giant Sauron tower... uh okay.
Kabal having a generic New York / Italianish accent was glorious - in a bad way.
Sonya Blade and Jax being literal nobodies, and just acting like conspiracy theorists.

Powers being explained as Arcana... you know that shit was either focus tested, or just put there as a plot element to get people to grasp why certain Human warriors had powers, and some did not. WHICH WAS BULL FUCKING SHIT. Just adapt it, you don't need to explain everything all the time.

I mean I was consciously aware as I watched it that it was not a good movie, but I couldn't help watching it through just to see my favorite characters. Never heard of General Riekan though, I thought he was part of the Rebel Alliance with Princess Leia or something. I agree that Liu Kang was not a strong character, and the main guy Cole was a bit boring tbh. My favorites were Sub Zero, who was actually a bit menacing, and Cole's wife who looked pretty cute. Personally, I thought Cole's wife stole the show, she even has an action scene :)

Terrible fucking movie.

Lame fights, boring actors, and the terrible plot made this a big waste of time.

Watch Scorpion's Revenge or the original film, it's a lot better of a use of your time.

I found it funny that Cole's daughter didn't look like his daughter at all. When they first showed her I thought it was his girlfriend or something like that.

I enjoyed it. Not as much as the recent Scorpion's Revenge animated film, but it had a lot of parts I marked out for. The opening, Sub-Zero vs Jax, Kano stealing every scene he was in, Kabal, Kung Lao vs Nitara (lol), and of course the entire finale. As for the negatives, the film really needed more time to breath, and a better script. Some of the characters felt wasted as well. The score was also very generic and not memorable at all save for the couple of times we heard Techno Syndrome's remix play. Film needed to be 30 minutes longer, honestly.

The first film was more structured and focused, and had some great one-on-one fights. The ones they did have here were still pretty good, but I think being an actual tournament helped 1. This film had better characterization for Sub-Zero and Scorpion, even though one of them doesn't get much screen time. I liked every single scene with Sub-Zero here, and his presence has that iconic status that the character has in the games. I read that the director didn't like how he was a jobber in the first film, so there's redemption there.

Don't have much to say about Cole. He was fine. Nothing standout, but nothing offensively bad with the character either. Don't know if he should have been the center-point of the plot though, but anyway...

This was bad. Felt very low budget. CGI was trash. Every actor was considerably worse than their counterpart in the original MK movie. The Sonya was particularly awful. She also had zero muscle tone and wasn't at all believable as a bad ass. Major downgrade. I cringed when this Shang Tseung said "your soul is mine." Such a pale comparison to the OG. Having "Cole" as the hero's journey character instead of Johnny Cage was fucking retarded.

To be fair I felt the same way about many of the male actors too. A lot of them did not have the stature or physique of a fight, Subzero is a short dude with narrow shoulders and no muscle tone. Jax is the only one who looked truly impressive besides Nathan Jones who is always a behemoth.

Shang Tsung was truly terrible. I don't know wtf they were thinking with his costume design and the way his stupid eyes were turning black like some generic demon character.

Then there's Cole. Why the fuck didn't they just have Liu Kang be MC again? Why did they make this terrible OC and have fan favorite characters job to this loser?

The chick who was Mileena was hot at least, even if her character was terrible. Hope I see her in a better movie than this.

I agree all the males looked soft too. I'm watching some clips from the original and everyone is way more jacked and intimidating looking.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
I wanted to like to so much more after the first 7 minutes were really fucking cool. Then it just turns into a weird movie that can't decide what it is.

The cut seemed crazy butchered as well. The pacing and plot moves extremely fast in a way that is incredibly jarring.

Why a new character like Cole was needed I have no idea. He's not Interesting in the slightest.

The fights are cool. I can't deny that. But they feel as if they are disjointed from the movie. Like they clearly knew they were going be where the budget was spent but had no idea how to tie them into the movie in a coherent way.

Feels bad man.

This movie is somehow cornier than the movie from 1995, "I am no longer bi han I am Sub-Zero" gtfo. The style they are going for would have been better suited for a TV show than a movie, to be honest with you it feels like a Netflix movie. Even with all the gore the movie from 1995 seems to have more of a legitimate feel to it.

The movie was disappointing. I enjoyed watching it but I was just expecting a lot more. More gore, more fighting , and more craziness. I forgot that i had lowered my expectations for the movie and started really looking forward to it. They really needed better fighting choreographers for the movie. Needed longer scenes of fighting instead of just straight up cuts every few seconds.

I'll finish tomorrow, this movie honestly feels like a YouTube project. You know how games turn out bad when they're listen to fans, this feels like that. It's crazy to think I'd take a bad Hollywood project over this, at least those feel like an actual movie. Right now I'm enjoying this less than annihilation

So who do you think should play Johnny Cage in the sequel?

Scott Adkins a hair too old

Alain Moussi would be perfect I think.

Movie was awesome. If you have a nice surround sound system plus buttkickers the movie rocks. So much lower bass my seat was moving the whole time, it was an experience. The story was just ok but really wasn't expecting anything brilliant as most movies plots have tons of holes but this was just a fun action movie.

Movie was ok. This is more like the prequel to MK. I now see why reiviewers were roasting the movie.

Kano was good. Kung Lao scene was good, Liu Kang and Sonya were ok. Raiden was fucking terrible. He sounded like a weakling God. This dude needs the axe. I feel like they messed up the movie by adding Cole. Surely he can’t be the main dude in the next one.

The movie was a mess. I enjoyed the fanservice present but they really needed someone to fix the script badly. The opening was fantastic though.

Thought Cole and that young chick are siblings. Then she calls that older gal “mom”, and Cole then kisses the mom and I became super confused for a second. Both parents look way too young to have a daughter that age, and the wife looks older than Cole too I thought.

I love Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero) in Warrior and The Swordsman, but thought he was merely “okay” here - Not sure why. Raiden and especially Shang Tsung were terrible. Liu Kang and Kung Lao aren’t entirely memorable either. I liked Sonya, Jax, and Kano though.

Hoping for better results from the planned prequels/sequels that Joe Taslim has signed on for.

Oh no, you're one of them who actually enjoy bass drops? Ignored.
