Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance

Just checked what was new on the Xbox one store and out of nowhere a wild Baldurs gate appeared..

That was a nigh on twenty year throwback I wasnt expecting

I was about to make a thread but you beat me to it.

Anyway yes BGDA came out today for ps4, switch and Xbox.

I loved this game. Playing with a friend was fun and the teamwork. It originally released in 2001 for ps2, Xbox, and game cube.

This game introduced me to the addictive nature of loot. I hadn't played much RPGs before this.

Hoping for dark alliance 2 and champions of norrath re release for modern consoles.

Don't forget Hunter: Reckoning!
Dude that was another game I played with my friend Co op all the time. It was tough. I don't remember if I ever beat it. I loved that game.

I hope that I can find someone to play these classics with again. If they don't have online co op.

I was like 12 years old when I played hunter the reckoning and bg. Good memories.

Yeah, that was one of the best eras for couch co-op. I played anything I could find with a top-down perspective with my brothers non-stop.

Don't forget a bard's tale, that one has the same engine\gameplay of these games.
Add Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel to that list.
Also, Dungeons & Dragons Heroes was practically identical to the Dark Alliance games. But it was exclusive to Xbox.

I loved co op so much that I rented any co op game I could find for years. Had a friend come over every weekend to play with me.

Used to check The Co Op Optimus website for details on which games had couch co op or not.

Are you interested in the 2021 Dark Alliance that releases in June.?

I played it on PS2 way back.

At the time, the graphics were way better than Diablo 2's sprite based hitchy visuals. DA was smooth and polygons.

But DA is among the most shallow Diablo clones I've played. The map, monster and loot spawns are boring and repetitive as hell. And it was super easy too. I beat the game just by renting it over a weekend.

I'm pretty out of the loop on it honestly. I just noticed a trailer on the PS store the other day. Looked very different, with possibly a closer action-style camera? That may just be the trailer though.

I'm interested, but need to see more before I would purchase it!

It seems a bit pricey for what it is. It looks like all they did was port it was there any other improvements? I would love to get it but 40 dollars Canadian seems a bit steep.

Played on PS2 last year.

It was plenty fun but not something I'd play again. The most straightforward of dungeon crawlers. Graphics were good for early PS2, and probably even better on OG XBOX.

Oh shit never played the fallout one, was it good?
I've never finished it :D.
I bought it used around 2015. I started it up and played maybe an hour, then I got distracted by other games. When MS came out with their backwards compatibility program, I put it into the permanent "wait until" pile, hoping they would eventually add it.
As for the gameplay, I'd say it's closer to Bard's Tale than Dark Alliance. The view is very top-down and zoomed in a bit too close. Has a very claustrophobic feel. It seems to be mostly an action game, with only basic fetch/kill quests for the RPG elements.
Now that MS owns Bethesda and the Fallout franchise, I hope they remember that it exists. I still want to finish it and it would be a much better experience enhanced through backwards compatibility.

This is a first. A game that's been added to backwards compatibility, but it doesn't work with the original disc.
For a lot of people, that mostly misses the point of backwards compatibility.
I own the game. I'm not buying it again.

This has happened before with GTA V and Skyrim. Both of those games are on 360 but their original discs don't work on X1. I have a feeling this isn't really backwards compatibility but a repackaging of the old title to be resold. I might have to do the license. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2 are also like this.

Didn't really enjoy this game but I'd probably buy it again, even though I barely played it the first time.

I'm fucking stupid like that.

Oh Snap GIF by T-Pain

I had no idea this was coming out. BG is one of my favorite franchises ever.

I know what I'm doing this weekend!

(building my new AR15 and playing this ofc)

Sorry for the bump but has anyone heard anything about the PC version? It was supposed to be coming out before the end of the year. I guess either poor console sales or COVID has scuppered that.

PS2/Xbox graphics quality was virtually the same, GC version in the other hand was quite noticeably inferior as to IQ and animation.

Fun game, and a technical miracle when it released first on Playstation 2.

Many of the early PS2 games suffered from image quality, aliasing and blurry texture issues, but then this game comes out with smooth as silk edges, 60 fps framerate, great textures with specular highlights and jaw-dropping water physics.

BGDA's programmer (Ezra Dreisbach) had a lot of experience working with the complex architecture of the Sega Saturn (see: Lobotomy Software and their ports of Quake, Powerslave, Duke Nukem 3D to the Saturn) and this helped him take advantage of the PS2's vector units, whereas other developers had been trying to brute-force PS2 titles using the CPU.

(Would love to see DF Retro do an episode on BGDA!)

Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance is amazing (also really fun in co-op)

This is how I wanted (or always imagined) a Diablo 3 to look like (back when Diablo 3 was years away from being announced).

Indeed, they used super sample anti-aliasing on the PS2 version, running the game at 2x internal resolution basically.
