This was the best resident evil game ever made. (not counting raid mode from revelations 2)
I can not say enough how fucking good the boss fights are and what a master class over level design this has been.
Seriously underrated as hell. And returnal can go fuck itself being priced 80 euro's and this game being 60. Absolute disgrace.

I rarely want to play a game again after i finish it.. This game is one of them
Feel the exact same, on my 3rd play trough now, I've never played a game again right after beating it. But here I am on play #3

I just finished the game on stream, and while I enjoyed it I wish Capcom had made this a new franchise. This feels completely like a new franchise already, and I think it would have been a good launching point for something new. Just drop all of the connections to the ridiculous pseudo science and go full supernatural.

That said, I completed the game locked at 30fps with a few settings on to keep that visual pop and I noticed a very apparent stutter every now and then. When I went into Mercenaries and turned all of the settings down to potato quality to get a buttery smooth 60fps, I STILL noticed the stutter. Even locked at 60fps, and it often occurred when an enemy died, but it would happen every now and then when running around too.

Anyone have any idea wtf is causing this? PS Mercenaries is a blast and very cathartic after getting terrorized by these fucks in the story mode.

Gameplay\combat and boss fights in returnal shits on the gameplay and bosses of re8 from great heights that it's not even funny tho...

We can argue about price but in terms of gameplay returnal pretty much destroy re8.

They better put mercenaries in RE4 Remake, or imma gonna Riot hardcore, i mean it's cool they put it in RE8 but mercenaries is more fitting to TOP style than FPS style.

Man imagine mercenaries with Leon, Krauser, Ada, Hunk and Wesker all playable with coop mode, Capcom you fuck up with no mercenaries in RE3 remake, don't fuck this up with RE4 Remake.

That's subjective, because a lot depends on what type of gameplay is the most fun for you. At the core they are very different games. Personally I had more fun with Village than with Returnal, both in terms of the gameplay and uncovering the story.

Pretty average mainstream game here I think. It's like Dear Esther with the occasional COD moment.
Lots of great locations but far too much of it is on rails, none of the enemies feel threatening and none of the guns really change the gameplay much. Even on hard it's pretty easy, even when mainly sticking to the basic pistol.
A fun ride but there's very little gameplay here and it's not much of a RE game.

I prefer re8 story too (even if it was silly as hell)

Was able to get S or SS on every Mercenaries stage but Factory II. Fuck that level. It took me forever on the normal difficulty, but I just can't do it on the harder difficulty. I said screw it and used a Trainer. Hate cheating, but I also don't want to waste any more time on it.
it's your game

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
its been so long that i really enjoyed a resident evil game.
RE7 blew my mind and this blew my mind even further, i can gladly say first person mode suits RE really well, i think RE8 may even top RE4 for me!!

Btw, anyone love how they implement the post content feature like RE3? its sooooo good, i prefer this over RE7 awful unlocks

I am also pretty surprised by the somewhat lukewarm reception from the critics. Happy to see so many players love it. I think this might be my favorite RE game. I loved RE2make and really liked what they did with RE7, but this is a fantastic mix of the two with a bit of RE4 thrown in there. I think the setting is phenoemnal and I really wished we got a slightly bigger Village section. Maybe another one later in the story like a suburb lol.

As much as I liked Returnal, I am kinda baffled by it scoring higher. Village does pretty much everything better. Even when it comes to replay value. When I play the game, I am always making progress. Progress towards challenges, progress towards weapons, upgrades, story, etc.

I wonder if the game being so traditional hurt it. Everything from its 10 hour length to its focus on setpieces and bosses, and metroidvania design unbashedly embraces old school design. And I guess thats not good enough anymore. Again, I liked Returnal, but I really disliked how some rooms can just fuck you over or how it forces bad guns on you. Returnal's bosses were excellent, but there is something AAA about these bosses some of the best setpieces I've seen implemented in a boss fight. It's almost Naughty Dog like in quality.

I dont know. I am just glad that there is a 10 hour game out there with awe-inspiring setpieces, intricate level design that rewards players for learning it, and has a ton of replay value. We dont get that anymore.

I absolutely loved this game! All the characters were very memorable for me, I love the added lore, and the crafting system and atmosphere were awesome.

Being a little nervous, I beat it on casual first and then went through on the standard difficulty. I've got a maxed out magnum and shotgun with infinite ammo for both as well as the grenade launcher.

I think I'm ready to try the hardest difficulty now. :)

Yeah I should’ve phrased it differently, I just use “mental illness” to blanket describe my various stuff but I know everyone probably isn’t comfortable with that terminology. For that I apologize sometimes I don’t translate well online

Hey. Missed your post. I get what you're saying. No worries. I'm guilty of misinterpreting posts myself. So apologies from me for taking your post at face value..

Anyways, anyone else here that gets disproportionately triggered with the sound of lady D's footsteps? I've a hard time dealing with this specific aspect lol..

Haha, I did exactly the same; being easily scared and anxious my first run was on casual. Just to check out what I would be dealing with. Currently on standard going for 100% item collection and maxing out my firearms.. the latter is going to take a while! =P

Oh cmon, it does not everything better.

Weapons upgrade is lame as fuck in re8, it's just better numbers, in returnal when you get a newperk you can add a fucking portal beam to a machine gun, cmon...it completely change how you use some weapons or it can transform a shit weapon to a good one, what does it change between level 1 magnum and level 5 magnum? Barely nothing if not more damage.

Mechanically the boss fights in returnal are also so much better...the only decent boss mechanically speaking is the last one, heisenberg is spectacular but super easy.

And don't even let me start on general combat and how clunky re8 is compared to returnal, i know, different games, but you started the comparison...

I just wanted to say that I never played RE7, so I have decided to begin playing it, and I did not realize that the revelation we learn about Ethan in Village is actually at the beginning, and not the end of 7. So as I'm playing through it, I'm left wondering how people felt about the ridiculous aspects of the game, such as Ethan getting his hand and leg cut off. There is a moment when Ethan does put his leg back on that he says something like, "What the hell?" This is really interesting to play this game in a backwards fashion. It feels like a prequel, aside from the subpar graphical fidelity, which is clearly showing its age. The visuals in 7 are super muddy, and the HDR is really bad. I'm actually playing it on SDR instead.

So I'm just wondering, did people just dismiss Ethan's ability to recover so easily as suspension of disbelief, or were they actually curious as to how it was even possible?

Lol I am fine with comparisons. Lets face it, these two games will be compared come GOTY time so why not start the comparisons right now.

The problem I have with returnal is that a lot of it is pure RNG. You brought up Portal beams, but I replayed the game three times and never had portal beem or portal turrets drop in the first three biomes. Maybe its by design since biomes 1 and 2 only have 1-2 perks per gun, or maybe i just got unlucky with RNG but it doesn't matter. You dont really get to use the best versions of the games until the second half and even then up until late in biome 5 when you hit level 20 proficiency and start getting weapons with 4 perk drops. By then 90% of the game is done.

When I was playing RE8, the upgrades felt substantial. While I would concede that the player movement upgrade shouldnt have been locked behind an upgrade, the accuracy and rate of fire improvements really helped with guns like the sniper rifle and shotgun. They felt far more powerful and fun to use, and on subsequent plays they have continued to feel more powerful.

Returnal's boss fights are excellent, but aside from the 3rd boss they lack the kind of spectacle you get in RE8 bosses. I have raved about Returnal's audiovisual package, but Lady Damiscus' boss fight/setpiece was an eyegasm and an eargasm. It was amazing. It screamed AAA.

Rng is part of the roguelite genre, you know what you are buying.

And how is not having portal beam for the first 3 biomes any different than not having the magnum at level 5 for the first 3\4 of re8?! In both games you start with shitty weapons and get upgrades the more you go forward.

And if we talk about spectacle i don't know how can you prefer any boss fight in re8 compared to the boss in returnal, just the build up with the music for the 4th boss is more hype than anything in re8.

Mechanically they are lame as fuck, yes some visually nice mutation for big bitch and heisenberg but i beated them on hard and their boss fight are super easy, they have like 2 moves...the fat fish guy and the search the doll boss are straight up shit.
Miranda is mechanically good but is she really more spectacular than any boss in returnal? A mutated humanoid with various phases...where i already heard that?!

I think we can have both different taste but saying that re8 does everything better than returnal is straight up bullshit imo, even if we jiust extrapolate the combat from both games, one is legit some of the best tps combat ever, the other is not even better than a mediocre full fledged fps with normal non-shitty movements and fast, precise aim, and if we talk about meleee, condemned, a x360 launch game literally rape the limited melee in re8.

That's another story all together, i abandoned returnal for the same reason, but i also played that thing for like 30 hours against the barely 10 of re8.

I was talking about on replays when I brought up the weapon comparisons. I have beaten the game three times now, and my weapons felt better every time.

I think it's probably unfair to say that it does everything better. I just think it does a lot of things better. I really liked the lead up to the world 4 boss, but the boss fight wasnt that much different from the other bosses save for Boss 3. I do agree that it is a matter of personal preference because I value AAA production values a lot more. Setpieces, story cutscenes, holy shit moments in general is where I think RE8 does things better. And of course, i am a sucker for Metroidvania design so when it comes to game design, it's no contest who wins here. I thought the mansion level and hub world is some of the best level design of this gen. I am struggling to come up with better levels from this past gen.

Both games are excellent and GOTY contenders IMO. From the reviews, it didnt feel like RE8 was hailed as a GOTY contender while Returnal got a lot more hype for its excellence.

Dude if you think the castle is top notch level design you need to play dishonored saga or prey.

I liked more the wtf moments and (silly) story in re8, returnal sniff is own farts too much and think it's smart having a story when you don't understand jack shit and nothing is written in stone but totally open to interpretation.

When I thought it couldn't get any weirder, now people are comparing it to... Returnal? Ok, both games have weapons and enemies.

Finished Village at 14 hours and it took me a week. I didn't want it to end, so this includes backtracking when I noticed the red areas and lots of contemplation/looking for the wooden goats. Game is a masterpiece, easily a 10/10. It's the convergence of decades of game design experience, very old-school in terms of linearity, balance and pace.

I was happy to see that they kept everything that made RE4 so good and updated it to first person and took the art and graphics to the highest level. It doesn't make any sense if someone says this is a 6/10, like Edge Magazine, and doesn't consider RE4 also mediocre. Maybe if you consider that RE4 gameplay didn't age well, which I personally don't think it did.

I love RE4 and Village as action games. The gunplay is fantastic, every weapon has its importance and even the most simple enemy will offer a weak spot (head) or the opportunity for you to shoot his leg and slow it down. The fact that weapons deal damage that is calculated by damage itself and not a script is also awesome and the idea that you can save the scarce ammo of the Magnum revolver for an accurate shot at a boss weak spot makes the combat more rewarding than the average FPS.

RE4 had a bit more variety and was also a bit more polished in this department, with more extensive arsenal and more relevant weapon upgrades. Village normal mode could also benefit from more challenge, but I'm yet to try the hardcore mode.

Visually, it goes from OK in open areas to next-gen quality indoors. I think this is the first photorealistic game in some parts and the art is phenomenal everywhere, from the characters to the Heisenberg factory. Capcom's artists are especially good with face models
was nice to find Mother Miranda is a beautiful woman and not the average monster boss
. Played on PS5 with raytracing on + Oled TV.

If I had to evolve this series to something else (and piss the orthodox fans), I'd like to see a more serious story instead of the absurdity of RE, but this a choice of style and not a problem.

Resident Evil may have started out as a console-exclusive franchise but with subsequent PC ports and new release, it's developed quite the modding scene over the past few years. This was best seen in Resident Evil 2 from 2019 and Resident Evil 3 in 2020, from replacing Mr. X with Pennywise from It to replacing all of the regular zombies with Nemesis.

With Resident Evil Village recently being released, it doesn't quite have the same range of mods just yet. Nevertheless, there are quite a few decent options available, whether it's providing fixes or revamping the appearance of certain characters. Let's take a look at ten mods that are worth using.

Yep. Indoor areas look insane. The material quality in the two mansions is as close to photorealistic as you can get with last gen games.

I would recommend you switch to performance mode for your hardcore run. The visuals dont take a noticeable hit but the performance is rock solid. Wouldn't be surprised if the game is running at 80-90 fps in this mode because i don't think i got a single drop when i switched.

You seem really threatened by his opinion. They are such completely different games that I'm not sure why anyone would even compare them.

Returnal is hella fun in an arcadey type game. ThTs not how I think of survival horror.

Memory leak on the PC version I read. Not that I know what a memory leak means but I'm assuming that's what is causing the bulk of the performance issues on PC.

I disagree on a few things but don't read this as me wanting to start an argument, lol.

Mostly just curious on why you think it's not much of an RE game. I'll give my point of view first; as someone who still actively plays the PSX RE games and CVX on the PS2, RE7 & 8 feel very much like RE titles to me, at least in terms of gameplay. Puzzles, exploration, inventory management, etc. In Village the inventory management is kind of turned on it's head and rather than running out of space for storage, the management factor to me was in crafting supplies. Do you make such and such ammo, or do you hold off and wait? Do you make a healing item or use the materials for sniper ammo, etc?

In terms of story, RE has been completely absurd for 2 decades now so I don't get worked up over ret cons and stuff like that. For me it's purely about gameplay and to me, Village nailed what made Classic RE so memorable as well as included some of the best elements of RE4.

To each their own though, no worries on our views not aligning.

Finished the game. Story takes a complete nosedive at the end. Like all of a sudden the entire tone of the game changes and takes itself too seriously; it seems like they passed on the ending the game was building toward, to instead cram the game with set pieces and weird fan service for people who have played the previous games.

Overall, the game is absurdly unfocused and ruins the potential of a lot of good ideas by doing so. That said, it still has some great exploration and combat segments, and truly incredible graphics. It has too many segments where control is taken away from the player, but is less offensive than RE7 in this regard by having many great gameplay segments as well. While it never reaches the heights of that game's first few hours, it is probably the better game overall. 7/10.

Game goes right in the B-tier of enjoyable but massively flawed RE games.

Finally finished the game. Yeah. The last hour of the game certainly went if a different direction.

Also, I think The Duke might be my new favourite character and is the real hero of the game.

So I'm just wondering, did people just dismiss Ethan's ability to recover so easily as suspension of disbelief, or were they actually curious as to how it was even possible?

From what I remember Zoe stitches his hand back together. Might've even used a staple gun. Its still highly unrealistic but it was within the realm of suspending disbelief by RE standards. Its a callback to Evil Dead, which RE7 was heavily inspired by.

Him getting his leg chopped off is totally optional. Many players didn't even experience that.

You think so? I don't know, I'm feeling more of a Texas Chainsaw vibe with this one, especially the first scene at the dinner table with them trying to feed you and the half-dead grandparent in the wheelchair.

Overall, though, I'm pretty inclined to think that they just retconned 7 with Village, but there is a direct reference to the megamycete in a letter in 7, so it's hard to tell.

Him getting his leg chopped off is totally optional. Many players didn't even experience that.
Well, I guess I was lucky, or not.... :)

Just finished the game, i loved it! i don't know why people think just because both (7&8) changed the perspective from 3rd to 1st that it's somehow NOT RE anymore, survival horror? Check, item management? Check? Spooky intro area's and zombies/ghouls? Check, first half is more scary and latter half is more action with an industrial/lab environment? Check!

Anyway the ending was good although I'm wondering where they're going with the
Adult/Teen Rose but I'm not holding my breath, 'member the Code Veronica X ending?

I wish Capcom had made this a new franchise.

People have been saying variations on this ever since RE4 but the simple fact is that Capcom just can't afford to spend this kind of money on a new IP.

For better or worse (better imo) RE is popular enough to allow Capcom free reign to experiment while also having the cash and talent to put out a consistently high quality product.

I wonder if the game being so traditional hurt it. Everything from its 10 hour length to its focus on setpieces and bosses, and metroidvania design unbashedly embraces old school design.

This is the impression I got as well. It's old-fashioned in many ways and is kind of a 'Fuck you' to modern design/storytelling sensibilities the press craves.

You think so? I don't know, I'm feeling more of a Texas Chainsaw vibe with this one

The team straight up said they used Evil Dead as their movie model for 7. I haven't seen it though, so its influence was lost on me.

And there's definitely some TCM DNA in there with the family table scene like you say.

People have been saying variations on this ever since RE4 but the simple fact is that Capcom just can't afford to spend this kind of money on a new IP.

Bogus, new franchises flourish all the time. By this logic why ever make anything new. Capcom has made a few new franchises that have been pretty successful too like Dragon's Dogma.

I have to say the enemy variety is way better than in RE7. Area variety aswell. Its definitely not as scary since it leans more towards the fantastical instead of delivering a grounded (or expected) experience that resident evil is known for.

The first main boss was incredible, not gonna spoil anything but it was totally unexpected. I'm glad I went in blind for this one.

This might be my favorite game this year so far and the best survival horror game since Remake 2.
I'm yet to get this but have reservations after not being overly impressed with the demo. Sounds like you're really impressed, you've been a long time resident evil fan?

For me very good (9/10) and addictive for 3/4 of game and then weak final that dismantle atmosphere with things more matching to Wolfenstein games and generaly too much silliness. Tough still would give it like 8/10, good game. Btw capcom instead of subtle rt could increase textures resolution and quality of folliage.

After thinking about it for a while, Village is probably my second favorite Resident Evil game, number uno being RE2 Remake of course. Resident Evil has always been goofy and this game takes it to the next level. So many memorable characters and moments. It's fun as hell to replay too thanks to inventory carrying over + all the cool unlockables. Great game.

This game is meant to be played multiple times. I don’t know why you would start off on hardcore aside from getting some lame badass gamer cred. The way to do it is to start off on casual and get everything you can and as much money as you can stock up and then replay the harder difficulties with new game plus with all of your upgraded shit. The method completely avoids any bullets sponge issues, empowers and enhances the replay factor.

Starting on Hardcore 🤣🤣
You genius! How did you think of that? We bow to your superior intelligence.
