I actually prefer Spider-Man (PS5) at 30fps.

People laughing here just forgot that the UE5 was 30fps as well. Yes I would take 30fps over 60fps sometimes if the sacrifices are big, and I prefer the Performance RT here even though finished it in the native 4K RT mode, but that mode was wonderful indeed.

You just need to adapt to 30fps and never play something else until you finish it.

Swinging around at 60 feels so much better, as does combat. The only thing where I might possibly prefer 30 is in cutscenes, only because there it feels more "cinematic".

To be clear, 30 never bothered me in the original, or in this game before I switched, but after tasting the game at 60 I just can't go back.

Guys, take it easy on OP. Some men like cock cages too. There's probably some psychological thing behind it.

For Call of Duty, sports, racing and fast twitchy games like Returnal, yeah 60fps is desired, but if you're playing Uncharted, Tomb Raider, The Last of Us, The Order 1886, Ratchet and Clank.... etc, the studio is actually going for that filmic look. Why do you think they put chromatic aberration, motion blur, FILM GRAIN, water splashing onto the lens and other camera effects into their games? It's because they don't want it to LOOK like a video game and I shouldn't feel like I'm at the arcade.

Honestly this is a great point. Contrary to the FPS-obsessed crowd, the goal of many games is decidedly not to mirror the real world, but instead to mimic the feeling of a film. None of these other effects like chromatic aberration, lens flares, etc make any sense whatsoever if pure realism is the focus. They do make sense once you realize certain genres of games are a simulation of filmic experience mixed with interaction (and I don't just mean obvious movie games like those boring entries from Quantic Dream... I mean that many atmospheric yet genuine games like Bloodborne go for a cinematic feeling).

It's worth revisiting a related question: why has there been almost no real movement towards 60fps (or 48fps, etc) for major films, despite frequent attempts to push for it? I think the inconvenient reality is that movement in the range of 24-30fps can feel better than 60fps. It's partly because movies are not the real world, and watching a 2d image moving around via animation frames always has a certain weird feeling, but in some ways that feeling only becomes stranger when the movement is too fast.

I'm sympathetic to OP. I think that many games fit with 30FPS better, and others don't.

So yeah, to summarise: I think Spidey on PS5 just feels better at 30fps, greater sense of momentum, greater emotional response, more aesthetically pleasing image and more artistically in keeping with the content. And I personally prefer to trade-off some responsiveness and visual comfort in favour of that.
You could say the same for Control UE, which I really wanted to play with RT because I have a PS5, so you want to use it's features, right?
I stopped playing it like 2 hours in the game, because it didn't feel good. It looked beautiful, but it just felt so dated.
A week later I thought "fck it", switched to 60 FPS and played the platin trophy out of it. This tought me, that I'm a 60 FPS guy. Didn't know it before, espeacially after years of 30FPS games on PS3. VITA and PS4.
But it's always good to have options. I like the approach 30FPS/RT 60FPS/NO-RT.

Hey OP, sorry for some of the bad blood spilled here today. Your opinion is valid and shouldnt get that kind of backlash, or at least not in that tone. This is supposed to be a community and I hope you feel part of it, despite of some peoples fake outrage.

Its a bit similar to that idea of PC master race. Some think you're only part of the master race if you run the latest Hardware and at least 8 individually controllable RGB lights. And then there is the idea of simply preferring the PC infrastructure and all it has to offer to be part of this glorious mess that is the PC master race. You can run a 6 year old Office Laptop and still be part of the wider community and at least enjoy some of the benefits of PC gaming.

So yeah, its absolutely ok to like 30 fps in certain games. Insomnicas motion blur is fantastic and simulates the speed of movement very well.

Have a nice day :)

I guess the main thing I don't understand is that everyone says:

Motion Blur = Bad
Chromatic Aberration = Bad
Film Grain = Bad
30fps = Bad

Yet developers keep making their games with those things. Surely the devs design their game to look a certain way right?

Why is the default mode in Spider-Man 30fps? It's because it looks the best. Everyone here is acting like 60fps is the only thing acceptable anymore, but you have to remember, we're not even close to pushing this hardware as hard as it can go. Devs will always find a way to max it out and then we're back to 30fps games again. That's the way it has been for decades.

Motion Blur = Bad
I disagree with this, depends on the implementation. High quality per object motion blur is excellent even in 60fps games. I just think most people still have nightmares from the PS3/360 where everything was a blurry smear at 20fps.

30fps = Bad
It's not necessarily bad (depending on the game and how it's handled). It's just worse than 60.

How is it worse than 60 though? Usually there's a reason why it's 30fps right? Usually there's some extra effects, extra resolution, better lighting, shadows etc.... so there's typically a reason why someone wants 30fps.

In cases like TLOU2 on PS5... there's literally no upgrade if you choose 30fps, so it's really an artistic choice at that point if you really want to play it at 30fps. I'm glad they kept the option there as to not FORCE anyone to change what they like. Same thing with God of War on PS5.

However, if you play Days Gone, there's no way to play it at 30fps unless you boot it from the disc and don't update it.

I just booted up the remaster. I personally went for 60fps with RT. I will admit though playing in 30fps on the ps4 Pro was a blast and I didn't have a problem buy4 now with the option of 60fps it's hard to go back.

I’m no 60 FPS snob, I ended up playing a lot of Demons Souls at 30 FPS

But Spiderman felt like a hugely jarring shift. It felt like 10 FPS when I was playing at 30. And I perfectly enjoyed the original release but when you can put them side by side the 30 FPS just began to feel terrible

There is a point you have to shutter speed, it would be nice if they could adjust that to 60 fps

I also played Spider-Man and MM at 30fps so I can have all the bells and whistles. It doesn't have the same choppiness that other games have at 30fps like DS or TLOU2. And as long as that's the case I will always go with quality mode if I'm not dependent on quick reaction like in a MP game or soulslike.

TLOU2 was choppy? Huh? TLOU2 has some of the best motion blur ever and it's a rock solid 30fps without pacing issues.

Same here man. I tried 60 for a few missions to start but it just looked so pretty at 30 I couldn't keep it that way. And I stopped noticing the increased smoothness after awhile as it runs very smooth looking at 30

When I'm playing The Witcher 3, my GPU is able to display between 40 and 60 fps, depending on the complexity and details on screen.
I can not stand big frame rate leaps, so I capped it at 45 fps. (I have an adaptive sync monitor which can thus handle that.)
The result is utterly satisfying, like the perfect mix between fluid animation and cinematic feel. And I don't detect occasional drops even if I know there are some.

4k120 all the way but that said, good 30 fps is ok.
I am replaying uc4 now on PS5 and thanks to God motion blur, it f feels and looks good. Aiming is not the best and there is some judder but it's the good kind of 30.
I always felt the same with bloodborne. It is extremely responsive for 30fps game.

Be demon's souls though is terrible at 30. Very slow. I wish all new game were 60 and pushed dynamic 4k or dlss

Sure you have vrr set correctly? 40 to 60 vrr is good for that purpose. I used 4k 40 to 60 vrr screen for years and vrr saved that thing

Yes, it works fine but big framerate leaps are still noticeable, which I can't say the same of little variations.
Plus, high frame rates felt off with that game :messenger_winking_tongue:
