The better question is: is the gaming industry obligated to? If video games want to be expressions of "art", let the people creating the art decide what they want to do and for whom they want to do it.

Most video games are not about expressing art, they are about hitting the target audience as well as possible so they make as much money as possible.

The thing is just that the target audience for big console games is mostly still males age 20-40 or something like that. Mobile market has already shifted a lot more towards women and the console market could follow. People will cry about wokeness and whatever, but it's simply about money.

I’m not sure the percentage of the rest of the industry. What can the gaming industry do? No idea, but after that thread of “ugly Alloy” maybe the problem is not in the industry but in some gamers perception of women.
I don't think women want to see ugly women to "feel more positively about themselves"... Like seeing weak men in action movies doesn't make me feel better.

Maybe go out and ask some chicks to see what they prefer, but I assume most like to see a beautiful/inspired idea of what a women is.

Might have more of them if a bunch of guys weren't falling over themselves to make sexists "jokes" as soon as they come up in conversation tbh.

Like imagine being a woman, seeing this thread, opening it to give your input and within a dozen posts you see people making jokes about how you belong in the kitchen or need a cleaning simulator like it's still 2005.
So you’re saying girls are so fragile, they can’t go into argument and teasing with guys and instead just stay away.

I know plenty of women who play games. They play all sorts of games from all sorts of genres. The biggest difference between them and the male players I know is that they avoid multiplayer for most games, especially ones where use of voice chat is common or expected. They also stay away from gaming related subreddits, discords and message boards for the most part, and the ones that don't try to hide the fact that they're women. All for very good reasons.

The games aren't really the problem, it's the people playing them.

Don't even have to ask. The cinema and fashion industry tells the tale.

I'm saying why would you expect them to bother engaging with people who still thinks "tee hee girls are for cleaning and cooking" is a funny thing to say in 2021. I'm not even a girl and even I don't think those people are worth engaging with when the topic of conversation is related to sexism.

Good job trying to twist my words though I guess?

So for quite awhile, but especially now there has been lots of debate on how various media can attract more of a female audience. I am curious what your thoughts are.

A good example is video games. Lots of men such as myself buy the new systems coming out to play the new games, a lot of the time they are of the very violent category. Of course a lot of women are turned off by it and won't buy it.

But companies going back to the old days would release "girl games" such as Barbie games, Mary Kate and Ashley games, Tomb Raider, etc. etc. which usually did not sell that well. Same could be said for other forms of entertainment despite it being said they used focus groups.

So my question is is do you think there is really anything companies can do to make women more likely to spend $300+ on a new gaming system as well as the money on games to make women more willing to buy video games while at the same time releasing the type of games men typically like, or do you think it's more of a futile effort?
Of course they can always do more but it needs to be driven by market research instead of listening to dumbass activists.

My wife, for example, watches a lot of TV shows and movies. All of her friends share similar interests. I would day there are almost no videogames that mirror her tastes in other media.

So if you took a game like RDR2 and slapped a female protagonist in there and shut down all the "toxic gamers" who say the character design isn't hot enough then that's NEVER going to get my wife to play a violent open world western.

She might dabble with Mario Kart and Overcooked etc from time to time but otherwise there aren't really any games that have "traditional" female focused content.

I think a lot of people in the industry who think they are doing things for women are really just putting female characters into gaming experiences that still mostly appeal to men.

Where are the soap opera, sitcom and romcom games? The high profile games are still basically action-adventure.

I wonder if a developer would be dragged by Twitter if they tried to do the video game equivalent of Bridget Jones, Sex and the City or Friends? Accused of stereotyping?

Nope, you’re right. That thread was a shitshow. I hate all the inclusion bullshit but to have dozens of pages of men telling everyone how disgusting alloy looked and how she was on a journey to morbid obesity was ground zero for turning women off from videogame culture.
Heaven forbid we celebrate health and beauty. This western culture is so backwards it's not even funny.

I know plenty of women who play games. They play all sorts of games from all sorts of genres. Why do they feel the need to point out they are female? I have never once made it a point to announce my gender. In fact, I very rarely see males point out they are males. It's always females mentioning how they are female....

I know women who are bored to the teeth of hearing the same "you belong in the kitchen" jokes that they've been hearing for their entire life, therefore, I only know miserable women and I'm going to change my gender identity within a year?

Outstanding conclusion.

It may depends on where I live and the type of game I play but I still have to meet a RL woman that play videogames.

I've met some online in the mmoprg era, and atm in Hunt Showdown I've met 1 woman in 2k hours....

Here's a question flash - do you know any women who laugh at those jokes? Or do they all scowl, throw their happy meal on the floor and tweet about depression? Or do you know any women that make the opposite jokes (men being lazy, unable to work the washing machine etc)?

Follow up question, who elected you to speak for these women in your head? Was there a voting circle with all the imaginary women prostrate crying for you to defend them? Or was it more like a circle of weeping statues like this?

Well, neither have I. On gaming boards people will generally just assume you're a guy. Convenient if you're actually a guy, not so convenient if you're not.

Besides, threads that deal with women or topics related to them either directly or indirectly aren't exactly uncommon on this board. I mean, you're posting in one right now. If a woman were to post in this thread, why wouldn't she point out that she's a woman?

It sounds like he is using his male dominance to subject all women to his opinion. Seems pretty sexist to me. He should probably get on twitter and apologize to all women.

Why does it have to be one or the other? Most I know would just roll their eyes and move on with it. Jokes are contextual. If I made a joke like that to my fiance, depending on the context she'd find it funny. If that context was "We're having a discussion about sexism and gender diversity", she would rightly find it to be inappropriate.

Literally no one, I had an opinion so I voiced it. I'm sorry that this upsets you as much as it does.

Good lord the hostility is off the charts here. It truly is a mystery why there aren't more women here engaging with the topic. Maybe one day we'll get to the bottom of it.

These were the exact questions asked by the videogame industry 30 years ago. Since that time, the question has been very definitely answered. Females are a significant portion of the gaming audience and they're not going away. 40 percent of all Playstation 4/5 owners are female, and Nintendo has captured at least half since the DS/Wii era.

The obvious solution to attract women to videogames--the very thing they've been shouting about all these years--is not with violent teenage male power fantasies, not with brute violence and endless shooting, but with games that bring people together, promote friendships and relationships, tell better stories than "my girlfriend was quote-unquote kidnapped for the twelfth time") and have female characters who don't resemble porn stars or blowup dolls.

This is a great opportunity for NeoGAF to attract more women to these forums. I highly recommend that the moderators and managers reach out to the girls out there in the videogame community and bring them over here. I think their perspective and opinions are essential and would be very welcome.

Gamers can't just function with the "Comic Book Guy" or "South Park Warcraft Nerd" stereotype forever. Time to catch up to the 21st Century.

It doesn't - hence why I said 'any', it's the old adage of maybe your circle isn't diverse enough if you all sit there, tut and shake your heads in unison when someone makes an obvious joke.

I wouldn't worry, you're engaging for all the women of the world apparently.

The boring answer is the same as everywhere, there are just more guys who are more enthusiastic about the hobby who use online communities. I'm in an RDR:O posse and women easily outnumber the guys in active players. But they don't have gender identifying names, they don't speak about their sex/gender ever in the sub so........whatever. The below ratio's are based on identifying members of subreddits - is reddit also too manly and oppressive for women?

They're not unicorns and we dont need to entice them here like creepy little ball fondlers. There are women who post here, and if other women/girls want to post on game forums we are one of many options. It doesn't matter if 30 people in here reply and say 'yeah I'm a girl' - no one cares. And second, get out. Calm down, that was another joke G G Boaty

I have no idea why that upsets you so much, how you equate that to me being transgender, how you take that to mean I think Im speaking on behalf of all women. Good lord take a step back and relax. I literally cannot fathom why what I said would bend you out of shape so badly.

Dude, it was aaaaaaa joke. Sorry, I mean Ma'am.

No, no. It's because women aren't as enthusiastic about games! THAT's why! It's definitely not the discourse that pops up every single time.

The problem is mostly the games. From what I understand tons of women play mobile and those facebook like games( I have no idea what that even is). Most likely the ability to jump in and play would suit their tastes.

That 40% number is probably bogus. Personal worthless experience would be I've met 2 women who game and one transitioned into a man a few years ago but I've met dozens of guys who play games.

This is the same old trick where you try and say dont get angry and someone refutes it then says see you're getting angry. It's lame, and old and something 12 year olds do. Again, it's due to your imagination - just like you imagined all these women crying. You now imagine I'm sitting here typing like an angry Brexit voter. We're having a discussion and you don't like what I'm saying. That's about it. I'm not asking you to like it, or even care if you do.

Definitely. It's certainly not the multi post, borderline transphobic and insulting rants from someone who (using their own words) doesn't care what gender someone is, simply because someone else suggested that perhaps more women would engage in the topic about sexism if there were less sexist jokes in the opening handful of posts.

I don't know any gaming women personally.... So 40% is not something I imagine. Online gaming also confirms my observation.
But ok. I only see a small bubble
This is my experience too. I only know two women who game routinely, and I almost never bump into any online (whenever there's the ability to speak with teammates or the opposition via voice).

That could simply mean, though, that they either don't speak online or are less interested in online play vs men.

Question for women and gaming? 60 dudes give their opinion.
You know what, despite all the sexist jokes posted here for (miserable) laughs, I do appreciate that there’s actually a discussion.

Everyone who posted anything in this thread would’ve been banned at RE. I think it’s awesome that everyone’s engaging with each other and actually sharing points of view.

It’s a fucking shame women aren’t coming in to tell us how they really see this. It does feel a little like watching 50 80-year old men deciding women’s rights but it’s what’s we have - which is better than nothing.

The better question is: is the gaming industry obligated to? If video games want to be expressions of "art", let the people creating the art decide what they want to do and for whom they want to do it.
Art is this:
main-qimg-fe25fd0ddfddaf35656bcbed85305829

This is for rich people.

Video games offer contents made by artists, some could definitely be art (I am fairly sure that given what was poured into the The Last of Us games they could be construed as "art")... but video games are mostly popular culture products that act as a storefront to sell DLC and other in game content—the game is not even the product in many cases, especially for mobile and big publisher's AAA titles for the which creation is mainly driven by customer behavior analysis and more effort is often put in the monetization aspect than anything else (the product is made professionally because they need a honey pot).
Don't even have to ask. The cinema and fashion industry tells the tale.
I know, even the lady on that old feminist image is kind of hot!
1200px-We_Can_Do_It%21_NARA_535413_-_Restoration_2.jpg

Now the whole "body positivity" movement (against the thin yoga/zumba type girls) changed nothing, guys who liked the thin ones still like the thin girls, those who liked the chunky ones still prefer the chunky ones, we still have booty shaking music videos. All we gained are morbidly obese and trans women models on front pages of women and sports magazines from time to time (and people acting as if that was an achievement in and of itself are trying too hard).

That problem needs to be solved immediately.
There are a few, few women here but otherwise this forum is too far gone, and I don't blame women for either not knowing about this site and/or not joining it. It would take a cleanup crew of mods to make this place more inviting for more women(which would in-turn piss off the more controversial members here), especially with some posters here who tend to deflect a ton and throw blame back onto others instead of taking a minute to look in the mirror. There's already one of those types in here, on page one.

Maybe if the joke was funny or obvious? Can you explain what the punchline is in "You said women perhaps don't like sexist jokes therefore you are a woman and imagine things".

This literally goes back to my first post in the thread where I said "Large parts of the gaming community are still immature when it comes to this and treat girl gamers as some other species that need special treatment, then try to pass it off as a joke." You've honestly just proven my point with the whole "Chill brah, it was just a prank" stuff.

Like, I get that the original post I referred to was a joke. It was a boring, terrible, worn out sexist joke that tells me the poster (and other's who post similar stuff) are not equipped to have a serious talk about sexism and gender diversity. At no point have I not known it was a joke, I literally referred to it as a joke in several of my posts, including ones you supposedly read before responding to.

Fuck all really wrong with the industry apart from a few bad eggs, id say the main problem lies with male gamers who get on like cunts... Games that cater to women? aye they're called fucking games, you know.. the ones we all play. I swear and maybe its just cause I'm older but women come in all shapes and sizes and love all sorts of stuff.. that and handbags.. i can walk into a store and blow £2k on a telly and wouldn't bat and eyelid but the wife wanting an £800 handbag, she may as well tell me she's murdered the kids, i just cant wrap my head around it.

I've been playing video games with girls/women since I was a kid, whether they were cousins, friends, or significant other

Sometimes their tastes differed from mine, sometimes they were more aligned, sometimes the girls were just as interested as I was, and others could barely care less.

It's almost like people are each unique individuals and trying to lump them all into some group in accordance with some base characteristics is a very silly notion

about the responses about why women haven’t given out their opinion in this thread need to to evaluate first how many women are active in neogaf first.

I mean just go to specific game pages on facebook and servers on discord and you would find many women are actually engaging in the gaming community. I mean just on the Resident Evil page I frequent to, there’s like tons of them. Discussion ranging from serious lore and mechanics to husbando polls about Dante and Leon.

Just like how people try to say that women are free to come to neogaf and participate, how about you step out of your bubble and try engaging in their community where they are.

Also, it’s kinda hard to post on this thread when half of it already dismisses the notion of women giving their opinion. How about try to be welcoming first so we can actually have a discussion where women won’t feel like they’ll be immediately be criticized if they ruffled your feathers.

It’s a serious discussion that needs serious answers.

I never said it was funny. It was very obvious. If it wasn't obvious how did you get onto the fact it was a joke? It's the obviousness of the jokes that triggered you, that you had to pick up on them. It prompted your first reply. You knew it was a blatant stupid one liner and you got into your battle armour right away. That's up to you. I looked at it, smirked then moved on with my life.

It's clear that you just don't have those social relationships where you take the piss out of each other based on stupid stereotypes and develop closeness. Like the 'old' jokes you use for your manager or coworkers etc. where you rip each other.

This is basically you to all women, waving round Call of Duty, Overwatch etc. imagining there's something wrong that they just want to play games they like and join communities that interest them.

To be honest this obsession about getting identified girls into the forums sounds way more neckbeard to me. It's like 'we wantz the hot gamergurlz, lulz'.

Just like how people try to say that women are free to come to neogaf and participate, how about you step out of your bubble and try engaging in their community where they are.

Because I don't care to chase women into communities just to discuss games with them. Do you imagine you're going to run in there like Milhouse and shout 'I'm one of the good ones ladies'? I don't care if your a man or women (but I draw the line at deers), I care if you know your subject matter and have a genuine interest.

I don't care if your a man or women (but I draw the line at deers), I care if you know your subject matter and have a genuine interest.
Have you ever stopped to think that maybe they don’t care to be in this thread either and if you want their answers then you would have to come to them?

They are the ones being asked and if you think they have to go out of their way just to satisfy you, you need an entitlement check.

The fact is, you don’t NEED to come to their community just as they don’t NEED to engage here but if you WANT answers that aren’t just majority made by men then you would have to come to a place that have at least a substantial amount of women.
