Megadrive!
Using the Bomfunk fucking MC's isn't really proving your point as far as the "hip" thing is concerned ;)

I am used to saying Genesis on english speaking websites... I hate that name too

but still, the PS1 was everywhere, it sold 70 million units MORE than the MegaDrive... just for perspective. even the SNES sold about 20million more and that was its direct competitor.
breaking the 100 million mark was a huge deal, no other home console did that before, not even close! the NES was the closest before the PS1 and even that was "only" slightly over 60million

I really loved the original Xbox, but the NES was a complete game changer for so long. It's near total domination. Bringing gaming back from the brink. It's a master console with some of the greatest games of all time.

The PS1 brought gaming to the mainstream. It was the 1st proper 3D gaming console and really changed video games forever in that 3D space.

The Xbox was a beast of a console. HDD. Great list of games. I loved it but in no way was as revolutionary as either the NES or PS1. They both changed gaming and moved it forward. The Xbox didn't do that.

The PS1 was that big that some night clubs and rave warehouses used to have a few set up to play shit like Wipeout, Ridge Racer and Tekken.
Yeah, I survived a few of them!
Some of us around here could be legally served alcohol (amongst other things) during the 90's. Anyway, I'm just teasing.
Video games, eh? Love 'em.

But, the nes justified and popularized the concept of a console itself.
Lol, strong stuff.

It sold over 100 million when the 360 was out, might want to mention that. Consoles usually Don't last that long in NA ps1 had 11 years. In comparison the 360 and PS4 were bigger during relevant before a successor gen started.

People need to stop looking at sales numbers on paper without context.

It was the 1st proper 3D gaming console
Lol.

. They both changed gaming and moved it forward. The Xbox didn't do that.
The NES did nothing but hold gaming back with a limited flicker console that ran slowly that specialized in one game type while computers and arcades were pushing gaming forward.

Lol gaming back from the brink, it's amazing how people will believe things without needing to show them.

We were asked about 3 specific consoles, not arcade and PC gaming. I answered based on those 3 consoles. And yes, the NES did move gaming forward and was a revolution at the time.

And the PS1 was the 1st PROPER 3D console released that actually succeeded with 3D games. Saturn was made for 2D as its priority. Everything before those 2 consoles tried 3D but didn't succeed like the PS1 did.

I could be wrong but it came after the gaming bubble, when most people were skeptical of consoles, when most game covers were misleading, and rapidly filled out North American living rooms, introduced a lot of eternal characters, so i don't think it's so strong.. i guess you might tell me that better games were on earlier consoles or something subjective and hipster like that, but I'm not talking about games, I'm talking about impact on release.. i think i was being pretty reasonable with my assertion..

Which already existed.

Myths across the board, you could write for wikipedia. Crash had nothing to do with games, and lol you must not have seen many NES box arts.

No it didn't. NES killed most genres and focused on one type of game style primarily while having weaknesses older consoles didn't have. That's relevant to the topic because the other two consoles actually did move things forward in several ways. The NES also destroyed almost all the previous demographics outside of young kids. Something that's still an issue now. The other two expanded gaming and brought multiple demographics together.

released that actually succeeded with 3D games. Saturn was made for 2D as its priority. Everything before those 2 consoles tried 3D but didn't succeed like the PS1 did.

Success have nothing to do with it. Use a thesaurus if you dont know the right term to use, "proper" isn't it. That means in context a system designed for 3D, those existed before, so no it wasn't the first "proper" 3D console. It's also tied for first successful anyway.

I voted Xbox but the gap between it and the NES is smaller than people portray it as. The Xbox actually has a larger library (~200 more games) and obviously hardware capabilities that are not only beyond the NES but bar-raising in it's own time. That being said, I think it is important to compare these console based on how good they were in their own time. The NES was greater during it's time, with tons of fantastic/genre defining games and being the clear market leader.

PlayStation is obviously the least worst though, it has 4+ times the games of either console and revolutionized the industry to resemble what it looks like today. Anyone who voted for the PlayStation needs to look in the mirror and slap what they see. :messenger_angry:

Hmm

Should i have my opinion in any way altered by the wanker taking on 4 posters at a time with an apparently sole desire to make me feel like an idiot, or from the sources I've encountered in my decades of life which had no such desire to fuck with me?

You honestly can't pick any of the 3.

NES Saved Gaming in NA,

PS brought CD and modern gaming in.

XBOX introduced mandatory hard drives, united gamer tags, Broadband only online,

They all brought something new, but I would say without Xbox and thier push for online, we would be 1000 years behind in the gaming space.

Still using save cards and have ppl lag switching all over the place.

Everyone that says Xbox is the worst without owning one, doesn't realize how quickly they pushed the industry forward, or how far back we would be without them.

Fuck even Netflix didn't believe in commercial streaming until Xbox helped them design an app.

Easily the NES. There are very few games in its collection that are worth playing today, frankly. It may have saved video games, but that fact and Mario are really its best claim to fame. Its got a handful of classics that still work, no doubt, but the vast majority of its software catalogue is forgotten for a reason. Everything else is pure nostalgia.

The PS1 helped moved video games from the realm of "toys" into the medium of "video games" that took over the world, and Sony let creators escape Nintendo's draconian "kid friendly" mantra. It rocked the entire industry, and created a massive shift in content and attitudes towards games. It's stellar collection of games is riddled with classics that are still pretty good, even today. Sony walked into Nintendo's domain and fucking crushed them with one of the best consoles of all time.

The Xbox moved gaming into the connected world we occupy today and defined so much of our current industry. Xbox Live was a transformational earthquake that re-shaped the entire industry by making online multiplayer gameplay available to the masses. The concept of online profiles and gamertags for consoles. Internal storage and what it offered developers is now the standard. Multi-platform APIs and cross-platform development standards were cemented by this console. And the games? Good Lord, the games. Owing to the fact that's its a younger console to both the PS1 and NES, so much of its library remains absolutely enjoyable today. There's a reason Xbox BC is such a touted feature; so many of its games stand the test of time.

Yeah, I agree on Xbox, but I also am very aware of the sentiment around PS1 being the tipping point of where console gaming "grew up"

Still, Xbox absolutely redefined the lines between console, gaming PC, and home media center. You see it everywhere now, but it's so easy to forget that. Xbox just didn't dominate the generation like PS1 and NES did.
This is a very valid argument. PS1 made gaming "cool" again. Xbox definitely helped to bridge the gap between PC and consoles. But, like you said... the OG Xbox just did not make a big enough dent in the market. For that reason... I really can't choose between the 3. It's true NES brought gaming back from the dead, it's true PS1 made gaming cool again, but it's also true that without the OG Xbox, a company so good at software, gaming right now would be at least 5 years behind where it is in terms of online and just plain software honestly. Sony and Nintendo are Japanese companies that are pretty bad at user end software, it was fairly common... just go into a Don Quijote, that is UI/UX overload... I don't think I can actually personally choose. Without either one of these video games would be very different or maybe non-existent.

You don't know what the fuck you're talking about. The PlayStation 1 sold 88 million units by October of 2001. Six years. The Xbox 360 came out in 2005 and production ended in 2016. It sold 84 million eleven years. By your "bigger during relevant argument" the PS1 sold 88 million in six years (not to mention going on to sell a further 15 million), while the Xbox 360 couldn't do what the PS1 did in six years during it's entire 11 year lifespan.

At no point ever in this goddamn world was the Xbox 360 bigger or more relevant than the PS1.

People need to stop looking at sales numbers on paper without context.

It's a good thing I just provided the context you didn't.

Lay off the crack.

Xbox by a country mile. System was huge, original controller was huge and even the smaller S model wasn't that great. While the game library is pretty good it didn't have nearly as many classic games as found on NES and PS1.

What year did that 84 million number include?

You are adding on years without adding sales, like thier last report was the last Xbox they ever sold.

You can't say it was on sale for 11 years but only reported 8, and call it a day.

In the end we don't actually know where 360 sales landed, except for a bunch of internet extrapolation.

You miss what it did as a console and forced the competition to do in the next gen.

The library is not the only circumstance when looking back.

It’s too bad the other things the Xbox did never caught on though! Imagine if we had hard drives in consoles! The things we could do with that. Or programmable shaders! Imagine if the trend xbox started of bringing PC games to console continued! We could see games like Starfield come to console one day instead of being PC only!

Sadly none of that ever happened :(

Oh really ?

The PS2 launched 1 year ahead of the xbox and had already a slot/bay fot the HDD. Yes it was not part of the System but could be extended by a standrard 3,5″ HDD.

PC games and Starfield on consoles ? Is this about the "xbox" brand or the 1st MS console ? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

You don't need to agre or dissagre, but IMO Xbox had the lowest impact on the gaming industry out of the three (NES, PS1, Xbox).

I can't vote in this poll, no easy way for me to decide between these three legends. I guess if I had to choose it would be Xbox as the worst of these three, but even then I do so reluctantly. Xbox was the first console where I felt online multiplayer was meaningful for me. I played a ton of Halo 1 & 2, Crimson Skies, and Mechassault online or in LAN parties with friends, and no other system at the time was doing those things well.

This means fuck all. The last reported sales for the 360 came in June 2014. Nine years, 84 million. The PS1 sold 88 million in six years. Not to mention as I said, going on to sell another 15 million even after that. So even going by the last reported numbers before Microsoft got too embarrassed to share them, that argument doesn't have a pot to piss in.

I'll say it again, ain't no point ever in this goddamn world was the Xbox 360 bigger than the PS1. Period.

Xbox brought a hell of a lot of PC only brands to console for the first time, and got them to stay, Bethesda being one. That’s a stone cold fact

PS1 because they took the controller and just added analog in a stupid position because they didn't want to screw with existing games. This led to fucking 4 more gens of terrible joystick placement because they are too lame to even give customers a choice.

You didn't have any sources, you're repeating myths from people just as unreliable as yourself.

You don't know what the fuck you're talking about. The PlayStation 1 sold 88 million units by October of 2001. Six years.

After the PS2 came out. Proving my point.

Also worldwide sales 1994-2001 isn't 6 years. Can't do math apparently.

You don't know what the fuck you're talking about. The PlayStation 1 sold 88 million units by October of 2001. Six years. The Xbox 360 came out in 2005 and production ended in 2016. It sold 84 million eleven years.

The Xbox 360 sold 84 million in 2014. Still can't do math.

Lay off the crack.
But you're the one on it since what I said is objectively true. Every other system outside NES/SMS was doing all genres of games and advancing genres and creating new ones. NES primary had side scrollers with simulator templates, which is why there were so many clones and similar playing games, while having slowdown, flicker, and other issues other systems outside the SMS didn't have. Which suffered from the same problems. Consoles used to compete with computers before the NES too.

This means fuck all. The last reported sales for the 360 came in June 2014. Nine years, 84 million. The PS1 sold 88 million in six years. The fanboy is rattled with this one. MS isn't embarrassed to share anything, Sony is the one that stopped giving out numbers before discontinuation. Also 88 million after the PS2 was out proving my point above again.

Yep.

Honestly think all three are great, I only voted Xbox because it didn’t “win” it’s respective generation in terms of sales, so it technically had an impact on less people. The 360 is where Xbox really influenced/changed things in the industry.

NES revived the industry, Xbox brought internet connectivity, and PS1.... not sure. It was just a much better N64, that ran CD ROMs and had far better third support. Thinking back I'm not sure what PS1 actually did that was revolutionary other than being low-priced and jam packed with games. Maybe that is it. Sony showed that you didn't need any gimmicks, you just need a solid machine at a solid price with a solid set of games to play.

I can’t vote as without NES we wouldn’t have PS1 and without those we would have had Xbox which is my fav console bar the Dreamcast. (Mainly for homebrew purposes, XBMC4Gamers & XBMC-Emustation eg…)

The funny thing about the Playstation is that its as much a descendent of the 80's home computer scene as the console one.

Essentially its where most European talent who came to the forefront during the 16-bit era (Amiga/ST) ended up. While many of these same groups dabbled in the contemporary SNES/Genesis console market, that was mainly a forced shift due in large part Commodore and Atari's decline in the early 90's, and as such can be most fairly judged a transitional phase.

Playstation was the natural heir platform.

In the context of their times, there's no question which is the best/worst of the lot (unless the PS1 is only allowed its launch controller or something), but in terms of which one I'd want to play today...

...call it heresy, but I'm not a big fan of 8-bit games. Mario 3 is a treasure, and I liked the original Sonic, but games didn't come into their own for me until the 16-bit era. *shrug*

You missed the point. In terms of impact on the industry, the first Xbox compared the psx and the nes, was practically the Stadia of today.
Stadia? Are you kidding? Not even comparatively does that make sense.

The console may not have lit the world on fire sales wise, but it still outsold Nintendo's offering first try and introduced the series that changed shooters (and multiplayer gaming in general) forever. I wasn't really into FPSs back then, but even I knew that Halo and Halo 2 were THE games of their time for competitive multiplayer.
