Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida hates that people think his game surpassed World of Warcraft, "WoW was the game we constantly looked up to"

I meant in opposition to how MMOs used to be. Original WoW barely told you the basics.
I really do not like this argument very much - wow was super basic. Move here click the 1 button. New World has far more complicated mechanics, it's not as simple as click on the guy, get quest, kill thing. At least in terms of how it interacts with the world. New World's crafting/gathering is also a bit more complicated. So to me, it makes sense to have a tutorial, it's not nearly as simple.

Oh definitely. I ended up missing a mechanic to progress in the final 2.0 dungeon and someone was nice enough to help me after they noticed I wasn't coming. Just with the influx of new players it's become even more apparent.
I’ve got the issue during the Real Reborn timeframe before any extension. I’ve just finish the last story dungeon to see the ending and gave up. I’ve never play it again.
i think I like it mainly, that’s why sometime I’m wishing for an offline FF14.

1.0 had absolutely nothing in common with XI, and its issue was that it was completely unfinished. What they released didn't even qualify as a pre-alpha. The retail version legitimately had no progression structure or gameplay loop whatsoever, it was just a bunch of Chinese asset farm assets tossed together with a pre-prototype combat system. HP, damage, abilities, exp (etc...) were all just placeholders, arbitrary values different coders chose for no reason in particular, it might as well have been randomly generated. Vanilla Realm Reborn wasn't much better, it was just an endless chain of menial fetch quests that acted like an 80 hour tutorial. They've actually removed most of it today it was so bad.
That's the joke, dude.

Eh, I think it actually does tell you the basics of interacting with the environment more than WoW ever did. But, I barely played WoW much, so I may misremember it.

It shows because FFXIV is basically an FF-skinned WoW as opposed to FFXI which was a true online FF game.
FFXI was just an FF-skinned Everquest with cutscenes. The development of FFXI was pretty similar to FFXIV 2.0. They went and spent some time playing the competition (EQ\WoW) and learned what they wanted to emulate and what they wanted to add\change. FFXI did NOT hold your hand at all. It punished you for everything, and it was glorious...of course it evolved a ton over the years into something much easier and more accessible. I think FFXI suffers from the same stuff WoW does now: an older engine, dwindling playerbase, and smaller staff on call to squeeze every last drop of blood out of the stone.

I missed FFXI, but not sure I could go back again. Already had all jobs at 99 with tons of merits, and rare\drops. I love that they added trusts to make soloing way more feasible for people that don't use 3rd party tools to godmode RDM shit.

FFXIV is very much the same as WoW, but has the benefit of being newer, and a much more cohesive story since it's been largely the same people working on it since 1.23 or earlier. Less people spinning the lore off the rails every other year, and ignoring lose ends.

I wholeheartedly disagree that FFXI was a reskinned Everquest. It was an FF game at it core and introduced many firsts to the MMO genre. To this day it's still the only MMO where you constantly need to swap out equipment to maximize each action you take, making equipment much more relevant than just full-timing the best set you currently own all the time like in every other MMO. The battle system was true to Final Fantasy and yet innovative at the same time; Hiroyuki Ito was so impressed with it in fact, that he decided to use it as a base for creating FFXII's battle system.

It sounds like you quit before Seekers of Adoulin came out. There is way more new and interesting content post Seekers of Adoulin than there ever was before Seekers of Adoulin and I'm sure you remember how much content the game already had when you played so you can imagine it now. The game is still thriving, turning a profit and adding new players, so much so recently that the player base started expanding again. The community, though much smaller than in its glory days, is still pretty tight and new players can usually get help if they need it. They're currently adding new story content monthly and have plans for even more story content down the road.

Yoshi-P also said they have big plans for the upcoming 20th anniversary next year:

I came back recently during the lockdowns and was able to have way more fun and accomplish way more than I did back in the day and I played for many years on and off, it's way less grindy. the game is the best it's ever been as far as I'm concerned. The only downside is the community isn't as strong as it used to be but like I said it's still there and you still need others to accomplish most end-game content.

Holy balls. FFXI was a reskinned EverQuest. If you wanted a different type of virtual world you would have to have looked into Ultima Online or Starwars galaxies both made by raph kosher. Or something like Ragnarok online or mabinogi.

If you played Dark age of Camelot you played FFXI. If you played EverQuest you played FFXI. FFXI was a poorly made EverQuest clone this is well established. It's pretty sad when square did it twice. Once copying everquest and then copying WoW lollllll.

Honestly it would take someone with a real idea for fun to make a decent final fantasy MMO if it's even possible
