I agree zendaya is annoying, and has the same annoyed expression in all her roles. She is the disaffected youth, side piece in every film i've seen her in. What have you done, zendaya, they're ALL the same look! I feel like i'm taking crazy pills, i invented the piano key neck tie, i INVENTED it!

Still trying to get my head around a 2 hour 35 minute movie that will only be half of a book adaptation - one that doesn't exactly speed along at a fast pace itself. How fucking slow is this thing going to be paced?

The fact they didn't film the second half at the same time also sounds absolutely crazy to me. The movie needs to make north of 500 million to turn a profit. In the middle of an ongoing pandemic.

Chances of getting part two made?

I'm actually pleased with the book being broken up into two parts. It makes sense for one, as there is a 'time skip' part after Paul joins up with the Fremen so that's a logical ending point. For another, Herbert was pathologically incapable of actually doing any sort of 'showing' vs 'telling'; The man was positively allergic to writing action scenes. I was pretty disappointed reading the book for these and some other reasons, but I readily admit I probably cracked it open far later then I should've- and too late regardless given how old the book is period. I want to see the Harkonnen + Sarduakar battle against the Atreides in the first half of the book, not just the after math from Paul/Jessica and the Baron's point of view. I want a war.

With a running time this long the movie can breath while also providing these moments that the book, frankly, glossed over.

You might not be if you never see part two...

As much as people hate on Lynch's Dune, the stillsuits and the sandworm designs are more appealing to me than the current generation Dune.

Yeah i don't if i can stomach zendaya annoyed and annoying face in another movie...

But it looks good.

This is the only casting choice I don't care for. I just don't like her. But whatevs, I trust Denis and I'm so down for this. When I was in the hospital getting my guts fucked up in April I reread the book for the fourth time so I'm ready.

Just can't.

Was excited about the prospect of another take at the story, but nah. As silly and often bazaar as Lynch's take was on the story, I felt like it was an honest interpretation. This...

I'm sure it will make lots of money. Doesn't look bad, just doesn't do anything for me in terms of stirring any emotion or interest.

Feeling kinda the same, Bladerunner 2049 didn't do much for me either. Critical Drinker raises a lot of nagging questions I had with the movie in his review.

I just fear we won't get part 2, cause normies have no taste.
Also a concern of mine the first trailer was tailored to the dune fans while this trailer seemed to be a typical trailer meant to draw people in I hope it does well in the box office.

Villenauve is a terrific director but he has a track record of making great movies that unfortunetley flop at the box office and I am worried Dune will as well.

I re-watched Jodorowsky's Dune yesterday with my brother... now the Villeneuve adaptation seems very tame and conventional in its visuals. Everything is brown/black/grey/white. I find the vibrant colorfulness, strange technology, and flamboyant character designs in the unmade Dune to be a lot more fascinating.

Villenneuve's films are bleak and gray. That's his style. He also hates set dressing. People live in sparsely decorated cavernous halls.

Re: trailer, unimpressive and didn't sway me either way. Funny that screen caps taken from the trailer over at Ars Technica hype me up more. Three and a half minutes of disjointed scenes is too long. It could have been split into three mini-trailers with cohesive themes.

Plans for a sequel and a prequel TV show before the first part is out is a red flag. Still optimistic, though.

Lynch’s Dune was a mess, but a beautiful mess. In a way, though, the film led to “Blue Velvet” and later Twin Peaks.

Was just listening to the OST of Dune 1984. I don’t normally like listening to movie soundtracks, but this track is quite stirring on its own. It really evokes an atmosphere.

“Dune” is a state of mind. It deserves a provocative, and evocative presentation. Jodorowsky’s take would have been interesting at the very least, and it probably would have worked given Lynch’s interpretation. I would also have liked to have seen Orson Welles play the Baron.

Not planning a part 2 film would be a red flag in this case. It’s half of the book.

The sequel script is already written. Back in 2019 Jon Spaihts was the showrunner of the prequel based on Brian Herbert's shitty books, but Legendary TV removed him from the show so he could focus on finishing the script for part two:

The way it sounds like they worked was Eric Roth wrote the original draft Part 1 (which included some of the second half of the book), and then Spaihts whittled it down to the Part 1 that was filmed. Then Eric Roth did an outline for Part 2 that was presented to the Estate, and Legendary had Spaihts write that script.

Really enjoying the cinematography so far. Greig Fraser was a solid pick.
Despite its' flaws, Rogue One was one of the more gorgeous looking of the recent Star Wars films, at least imo. Very earthy and moody.
I honestly have no idea where some of you are getting the impression the visuals are gray or grimdark lol

This is exactly what Dune is supposed to look like.

YES. you're right, this does look like Rogue One. That movie was very distinctive. So he's the mind behind that look? He's on Dune?

Hot damn.

One thing I've always wondered if it was in the books: if the spice only exists on Arrakis and is vital to space travel, how did other civilizations discover that planet without some form of space travel?

I honestly don't remember if it was covered but 3 possibilities come to mind.

1) really fucking slowly on generation ships
2) they used AI before it was banned.
3) it's possible for a navigator to fold space without the enhanced mental powers that spice gives them just very dangerous and some people took the risk.

Yes it’s 3. Space folding doesn’t require spice, it uses the Holtzman effect which is the same tech that works in shields. I think it was 1 in 10 ships would be lost before navigators.

I really like Villeneuve's sensibilities, that's really the main reason I have high hopes for this movie.
Same, I love his interpretation of realism.

He's particularly good at capturing very "human" elements; whether that focus is psychological ( in Prisoners) or visceral ( in Sicario)
There's a certain amount of underlying tension in his films.

His sensibilities are just the sort that compliments the otherworldliness in hard science fiction, in cases like Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival.

I'm very worried we won't get a part 2 either, that cast is gonna be hard to reassemble.

But really, a father has to ask the MOTHER if she will protect her own child? Why do writers put this kind of shit on paper?

And sadly, I know the '84 movie so well I need to translate the currently actors for Gurney and Idaho into their '84 counterparts to remember which is which :p

You'll think differently once you see that full scene. The exchange carries more weight than those few seconds cut for the trailer suggest.

It certainly looks like they have the right director. There are also certain visual aesthetics in Dune I’m looking forward to seeing like the Navigators and the Bene Gesserit that in the original film sort of introduced me to this futuristic vast galactic empire.

The title on the movie is Dune Part One.
Yes, my point is that Part One better blow the audience's socks off. I suppose they will end Part One on a dark note somewhere after
the tooth.
and it will be self-contained story in some sense, but incomplete. Star Wars didn't have this problem because Lucas remixed and lifted content from here and there. Dune Part Two should be Empire Strikes Back and ROTJ combined, essentially.

I started watching Quins Idea channel last year, he's great at explaining Dune to a non book reader like me. I saw the 80's Dune. It was all I knew. Quin opened a whole new Dune to me.
His love and enthusiasm for the world and its characters are appreciated. The dude knows his stuff.
