Jim Ryan ‘feels bad’ Sony won’t be able meet PS5 demand for ‘some time’ yet

Despite a global chip shortage, PlayStation’s boss said on Wednesday that the company has managed to produce and sell a record number of PS5 consoles.

However, overwhelming demand for the console means PS5 won’t be readily available for some time yet.

“We’ve built more PlayStations faster than we ever have before which makes me happy. But on the other hand, we’re some time from being able to meet all the demand that’s out there, which makes me feel bad,” Ryan told Reuters.

“Our partners are performing really well for us, but the chip shortage is definitely a challenge that we are all navigating.”

In a separate Famitsu interview, Ryan was asked if he thinks PS5 availability will improve by the end of this year.

“We know that it’s still difficult for gamers to get PS5, and we’re very sorry about that,” he responded.

“There are signs that things are loosening up a bit, but we still have a lot of work to do.”

Sony claimed on Wednesday that PS5 has become its fastest selling console ever after topping 10 million sales globally.

The console reached the milestone in mid-July, about eight months after its launch, and just under a month faster than the PS4 managed.

“While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply,” Ryan said.

“I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges throughout the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for SIE.”

doubt so...this is just a CEO chest thumping and hyping

My guess without the shortages, maybe 12-13m instead of 10m.

console demand afaics are not on some super scale upswing. There is no indications of that i see around me. 🤷‍♀️
You could be right.

There are factor's to consider though... like Covid. Why did Nintendo benefit from it so much but not the PS4 and Xbox One in 2020? Is it because Xbox One and PS4 were old and on the way out, or was it because they are stationary consoles which consumers found less appealing during Covid times? It really is hard to make sense of it all because we're in uncharted territory.

Maybe a launch Playstation or even Xbox would have broken 20 million during Covid times. Maybe not, but the unfortunate reality is unless they can ship enough out, they're the ones who will be missing out on all the extra sales that could have been accumulated when the iron was hot so to speak.

Yap inflationary increase and covid helps but imo i have not seen the thirst for ps5 exceeding the usual 'new toy' anticipation, especially with games costing more now.

So even with no supply issues, i do not expect said 'real' sales to be much higher than what we have today.

at least not gonna be inline with what jim keeps trying to imply at. 🤷‍♀️

is there a way to find out how many of those 10 million are actually in the hands of gamers and not just scalpers? Those are the only numbers I care about.
The idea that scalpers are sitting on a significant number of consoles is silly. Their goal is to flip them as quickly as possible. At most, they are delaying getting the console from retailers to a gamer by a few weeks. It sucks and I dislike scalping but scalping is not keeping consoles out of gamers hands. It is just making the impatient ones pay more.

That’s ok Jimmy boy, just make your games for PS4 instead. Sheesh

Don't forget PC.

There’s been a lot of demand for everything, and production is only now starting to catch up. It likely won’t be until early next year that things become to ease, given that the holidays are just around the corner.

My guess you are trolling hard there. 1-2 milion of more units placeable at the best without shortage? Lol.

Are there any indicators that the new gen of console gaming are on a new growth trajectory? Like what groundbreaking things are being done now that is different and will attract bigger launch crowd? 🤷‍♀️

We have covid, we have the early adopters with inflationary growth in buyers. That is about it for launch year imo.

jimbo can beat his chest painting a huge upswing narratives, but i aint seeing it anecdotally.

The real growth of numbers will be during the span of the generation. Whether more people are buying into consoles, into gaming, that remains to be seen, and depends on what are offered on the table.

Depends what games get produced. They need to grow with the audience.

If gaming remained shallow arcade space invaders - many of us would have moved on decades ago. But the industry grew with us creating more mature narrative driven structures, and us old school guys got what we want.

And then Tom Clancy’s Xdefiant comes along! Jesus wept.

Suffice it to say, everything going free to play grind is definitely pushing me away, luckily there is still sufficient of the other type to keep me vested, but the outlook is looking a bit grim imho. However on the flip side, I suspect the pendulum will swing as the kids playing this drivel today will want more intimate experiences in the future and the market will rebalance. Gaming really needs to cater to people of all tastes and ages to continually grow.

I have to admit it was kinda hype getting a ps5. I had notifications on for wario and waited in those dumb ass lines from sony direct. Then I got one and now I barely touch the thing.
Same here. Xbox got too many games thanks game pass that i barely get time to play PS5.

Waiting for Ghost of Tsushima DLC and Horizon 2 now.

Only game i played on PS5 this year was Ratchet and Tlou 2 again as i wanted to experience abby in 60fps :p

Why do i always see you in PS related threads with weak ass trolling posts?

Do us all a favour and go play some old games on that renting service that you like so much.

I probably would have bought one if it was readily available.

I guess they are making enough money but somewhere at Sony there is a spreadsheet that shows how much they COULD have made on hardware, software and subscription sales if supply met demand.

Honestly, what games do these systems even have?
The ps5, and the series console have no games majority of people wants.
The only big next gen is nichie games, majority of people have no interest in.

Halo, forza, horizon forbidden, God of war 2, GT are all on previous gen. 3rd party games are still on previous gen.

I dont see that much incentive for people to switch. Unless 3rd party games, go to next gen consoles, it will take time for people to buy next gen consoles.

Shortage or not, it depends on the how 3rd party and 1st party games act.

Haven't powered it on for over a month. Same goes for Xbox.

I understand people wanting this thing, and even debating if they should feed a scalper, but take solace in the fact you will end up not using it much once the novelty wears off as there isn't that much software coming out. And most of it would also work just fine on a PS4.

Now, why do you think gamers pay scalpers a premium? Or do you think scalpers keep sitting on unwanted stock?

All of those end up in the hands of gamers. And they will consume software.

The size isn't really that bad, takes about the same space as PS3 fat.
It's considerably larger actually. I have literally watched videos with the 2 systems side by side. Ps3 fat may be thicker though , but the ps5 footprint is quite a bit larger.
It's a monster.

Anyone know what cause the chip shortage?

It's the precious metal used for it right? It's getting difficult to extract?

Right. It's not that hard to figure that out. Just check Ebay. Scalpers are selling tons of consoles at ridiculous prices. They are all ending up in customers hands.

Limited supply also makes it kind of exotic and rare, maybe a little more exciting to obtain, I think Sony know what they're doing.

Not a big difference in reality.

Replaced my PS3 fat with PS5 in the same TV stand cabinet.
(Somehow feels even more airy with PS5 in there)

Cant this prick put in a ticket system for the Ps5? You sign up to Sony, pre order ONE, then get it when it's ready?

All i'm seeing is wanky scalping and this cunt saying 'yeah, sorry'

I havent even seen a Ps5 locally, at all. Nowhere.

Man this reads so much like a kid in denial that his favorite toy isn't as popular as something else.

The fastest console in history to have passed the 10 million mark.

And to think it could have done even more without the chip shortage problem.

It's a strange kind a paradox. Fastest to reach 10 million because they were the only company to ever ship 10 million consoles this fast, despite console shortages:alien:
