Hands On Impressions of Switch Oled

It's been getting rave reviews from hands on previews, for handheld players of course. I don't think there is any point in this for those who use the Switch docked.

I mean, I'm fine with my current launch day "hackable" Switch, but why not sell it for big bucks and just grab the vastly superior alternative? The screen is apparently banana's and a total game changer. Look, the device is undeniably sexy.

I didn't consider upgrading after the initial disappointment of the fake rumors, but for my situation it just makes sense.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Hands-On: Nintendo Switch OLED is a striking improvement for portable players | VGC

Nintendo's new 7-inch screen is a huge upgrade, but there's little here for television play…

Much – ok, most – of the talk around Nintendo’s OLED Switch revision has been around the features it doesn’t have, thanks to several incorrect reports building expectation for 4K resolution and under-the-hood power boosts.

Once you get the device in your hands, however, much of that disappointment fades away, and OLED feels like a striking improvement compared to the original Switch model – as long as you like playing in portable mode, that is.
Side-by-side with an original Switch model, OLED’s screen is a quantum leap over its predecessor; Breath of the Wild looks razer sharp, like a rezzed-up PC port, while Mario Kart is a tour de force of colour and allows you to spot items and characters in the distance far more easily.

The original Nintendo Switch uses a 6.2-inch LCD screen, and the Switch Lite has a 5.5-inch LCD screen, while the new model has a 7-inch OLED screen. Compared to the Switch and Switch Lite, the OLED model better displays light and black levels, which presents a more vivid and illuminating picture that looks clear, bright, and stunning in motion."

Compared to the original Switch's smaller speakers, the enhanced audio speakers on the new model are much larger, improving the audio while playing in handheld mode.

The OLED model also has other slight improvements and additions that give the console a better-optimized design. The new kickstand on the tablet is far more flexible and is generally an excellent improvement overall from the flimsy original. Furthermore, the SD card slot has been altered, which now appears on a slope to remove and insert cards a bit easier. The OLED model will have two SKUs: one with a black and white color scheme with a white dock and another with the traditional neon blue and red design with a black dock.

It's just a regular switch with a slightly brighter screen.
The screen is not just brighter, but much better and bigger. Not to mention the unit itself has several improvements including the speakers, kickstand and memory.

I don't see a point in NOT getting it if you play it undocked most of the time. Particularly if you could get some nice resale value proposition on your OG Switch.

Wonder how much they got paid lol

Like how can u uptalk a handheld that just got a 0.8 inch bigger screen with oled slammed on it. i

I can't wait for the shitty speakers to be a bit lesser shit, and the excellent improvement overall from the flimsy original. Who even talks like that.

Its straight up the most lackbusting improvement u can ever imagine.

My Switch Lite is fine for what there is to play at the moment, if it ran even a slight bit better I would have bought without hesitating.

I'm going to be honest with you and say that I believe that the majority of non forum frequenting consumers will see a better screen as bigger upgrade than enhanced specs, which the masses don't care about, and also that not all OLED's were not created equally.

True and that's why you get a turd like this delivered at your doorsteps for 350 dollars that adds straight up jack shit to the experience.

if those idiots would actually stop buying those trash easy money grab refreshals u would actually get a steam deck like device that will play every single game under the sun and make the witcher 3 with DLSS at 720p 60 fps at medium settings possible instead of the absolute dog shit blur fest that will be showcased in "a more vivid and illuminating picture that looks clear, bright, and stunning in motion"

Instead Nintendo is going to milk this thing out and probably another revision for the next 5 years to come.

Just like people praised the 3DS XL. I thought the lower pixel density made everything look MUCH worse.
A 6.2 inch to 7 inch screen decrease in pixel density is not going to be nearly much of a difference maker than a beautiful vivid OLED screen which better displays light and black levels imo.

Anyway, I've given my 2 cents on the matter. I bet this thing is going sell like hotcakes.

Steam Deck is just another portable PC though. Most consumers don't want to deal with the PC part and just want to play games which is why it's niche. There are also plenty of portable PC's on the market already and if I was going to go that route, I'd go with the gdp win 3, which has been out since january and has arguably better specs.

Core i7, intel Xe graphics (highest end intel graphics at the moment), 16gb ram, 1tb nvme ssd, thunderbolt port, slide out keyboard. The price is steep at around $1100 true, but its already here and superior to the Deck.

Yeah, I was sloppy with my reply 🙂 - I really don't disagree that the OLED characteristics will give it a huge boost, and it will no doubt sell like hotcakes.

The pixel density decrease is more of a parenthesis, but still unfortunate I think. Nintendo always seem to do this, they upgrade some features and downgrade others.

if this 7" uses a regular pentile oled, the pixel density will look far worser :messenger_face_screaming:

ps vita had to use rgb oled because of the lower resolution back then.

does the new oled even support hdr?

What i mean is that thing would actually get some hardware so devs can deliver half decent parts to the platform because it costs them absolute jack shit effort to do so. And sell there games to a 100m audience. They could port every PC game under the sun to that thing.

However instead u got a 0.8 inch bigger screen in oled. It's laughable.

I couldn't tell you, but I'll go with the hands on impressions that say the games look way better on the OLED screen.

Gamespot flops Nintendo products all the time, they've earned my trust.

None of the new features interest me except the stand. I knew before the first Switch even came out that the next model would copy the Surface stand. It was so inevitable.

Improved screen - meh, I’m sure it’s awesome but it won’t convince me

Improved dock - I have a screen protector anyway so scratches aren’t an issue

Dual speakers - anything above GB quality is ok for me since I rarely play for long periods when off the TV.

Improved top bit that won’t crack as easily - I haven’t experienced this yet but if I did I guess it might be a selling point for me.

Improved sticks is what would have had me there on day 1. You blew it Nintendo!

The resolution and performance are the same. It's not MUCH better. Also, that 'several improvements including...' is a marketing phrase. Those are the only improvements, and no one cares about the kickstand or the tiny speakers.

Nintendo couldn't even shell out some extra money to make the dock cover the full screen?

That tiny bit peaking out is going to be a fucking dust magnet, talk about cutting corners.

Also the hyperbole in those previews, these aren't journalists, these are hypemen.

From Eurogamer:

Then of course there are the other benefits of the OLED screen. Perhaps sending along the colour blind member of the team wasn't the best approach, but Nintendo is being selective with who's able to access the machine and remains reluctant to put it in front of the likes of Digital Foundry who might be able to go a little more in-depth, and weeks after it was first shown off Stateside, photography of the Switch OLED remains prohibited.

These are all great signs.

If it covers the full screen then you can't easily take it out of the dock- especially with thinner bezels. Practical use beats aesthetics in this case surely.

What the hell you rambling about? it sticks out just like the previous one in fact it appears it sticks out just as much as it did before in the older model, how the hell do you think you are supposed to get it out of the dock if it went all the way to the top. Like a toaster with it popping up?

I think people are understimating how much better a OLED screen looks, just compare the Vita 1000-2000, its night and day, i got memed by reddit into buying a 2000 as a secondary Vita. (i had a oled vita also) the screen was utter shit everything looked washed out, i sold it instantly and bought another OLED model.

You will see what i mean when you buy the Switch OLED and compare it to the old one side by side, much better screen i can guarante it.

If you'll notice in this thread most of the complaints are straight up made up, games couldn't possibly look better on an OLED screen, and any positive impressions are obviously paid shills :messenger_tears_of_joy: Typical Nintendo thread

Yeah, hands on are saying the screen straight up blows away the Vita's which should be a given considering the tech is so much newer.

I can guarantee when the masses see it out in the wild they'll be wanting to upgrade.

People might not want to admit it, but this is a clever way to extend the life of the platform without complicating things by adding a separate set of specs to develop for. The masses don't give two shits about specs, they care far more about what the device looks like and bells and whistles like fancy screens.

Here's a review from.a site that isn't trying to curry favour with Nintendo

This sounds ultimately positive and he's saying essentially the exact same thing about the screen:

"Still, even with my limited vision I could spot the lysergic pop of Hyrule's greens in Breath of the Wild, the deeper blacks in Mario Kart 8 and the enhanced intensity of Super Mario Odyssey's palette."

Even if these previews are obviously paid for, a quality OLED screen will be a big improvement. It certainly won't make the games look higher resolution, nor will it raise the framerate though...

I'm pretty sure it's the same resolution. So yes, just brighter.

#neogaf

It doesn't look like a big deal at all though. Just because he is positive doesn't mean everyone has to agree with him. I think this attitude reflects Neogaf more, as everything you said against is invalid and "it will sell like hotcakes anyway so you lose".

The masses care about the price because they buy this to give to their kids so they don't have to spend time with them. The only argument that matters is the price : the lower the better. They won't buy a more expensive model.

Yes but he is measured in his review : "It's nice and maybe marginally worth it" not "OLED is the second coming of graphics upgrades. DLSS wishes it was this good,
excuse me while I orgasm".
