Hands On Impressions of Switch Oled

NO PAIN TRANCE CONTINUE
Isn't this upgrade primarily meant to appeal to handheld mode players? Don't bother it was a rhetorical question. So why didn't they address the joystick drift issues and implemented a proper d-pad? Nevermind, it's a rhetorical question. FFS

The masses care about the price because they buy this to give to their kids so they don't have to spend time with them. The only argument that matters is the price : the lower the better. They won't buy a more expensive model.
If that was the case the Switch Lite would be the best selling model, when in fact, the more expensive Switch is selling far better. The fact is premium models tend to sell the best.

I guess time will tell though right? :messenger_ok:We can revisit this thread when the OLED is still sold out 6 months from release and on its way to fully replacing the current Switch.

Why would anyone buy this?
I’m probably going to get one, but that’s only because I don’t have a Switch already and figured I may as well get the newer one with some slight perks. I have one preordered already, but I may not even be able to get it since I’ve been getting fucked financially lately.

Anyone who already has a Switch would be pretty foolish to get an OLED unless their original was like broken and out of warranty or something.

Why would it be foolish to upgrade to a much better screen and speakers if you primarily play undocked and could get a significant return investment on an OG Switch model? It would be foolish not to upgrade.

I think people are ignoring this on purpose. Have a feeling those problems will still persist.

Contrast is very important and OLED displays have perfect contrast. I bet it is a big upgrade.
Nintendo games usually have clear art design and vibrant colors. I dare say that Nintendo games might look kinda nice on an OLED screen.

Cant we just have a new Vita? I loved the Vita. I still rate it higher than the Switch, it was an awsome bit of kit.

Yea. That was 10 years ago. Welcome to a decade ago.
And it's arguably still the best handheld screen of all time. So Switch getting one is kind of a big deal, especially since the Switch one will likely be quite a bit better.

Not all OLED screens are alike ofc but my experience of my new mobile phone, which is the first one I've had with an OLED screen and its amazing in every way except the brightness is not good enough for viewing the screen in the sun at all, I could barely see anything even at max brightness, compared to the (comparably in terms of contrast and such) crap LCD screen on my 2014 Samsung where it could easily be seen.

So I would think that could potentially be a problem for people who live in places where its bright and sunny a lot (not so much a problem in Scotland lol) vs. the old Switch screen. Although I've never even used my old Switch in the sun to know whether its bright enough to overcome the bright sunlight.

How is people experiences playing current Switch model in the sun?

It's bizarre. It's A: far to heavy and lacking a good ergonomic design, B: has stick drift and C: no d-pad... Smh.

The only impression that matters is whether or not the dock still scratches the screen. If it does then paying 50$ for a screen likely to experience burn-in seems even more like a ripoff than it already does.

Should I sell my CFW compatible OG Switch and buy this? Decisions, decisions...
I’ve also got a first revision switch and it overheats on some games. I’ve been told I should just open it up and clean it out but we are an adult only household with no dogs/cats…

im wondering where I should dump mine and buy a new revision myself. Is eBay better than GameStop? Is there somewhere else I’m not considering?

lower ppi

I'm not defending them but increasing contrast does increase perceived sharpness on a display, especially with high contrast edges, so maybe that offsets the loss of sharpness from a bigger screen/lower ppi.

I've seen plenty of 65" OLED next to 55" LCDs looking sharper, even though the image processing is mostly the same (See LG "Nano" LCDs vs. their OLEDs), we should wait for side by side comparisons from respected tech people but even then you'll have to go with their word.

Why not move the charging spot to the top so you can have it on a stand and charge it ? That’s been bothering me since they announced it. Why not just change the on thing that will help a lot ?

if this 7" uses a regular pentile oled, the pixel density will look far worser :messenger_face_screaming:

ps vita had to use rgb oled because of the lower resolution back then.

does the new oled even support hdr?
Excellent question at the end... and it should have been a HUGE YES, announced WITH the model... and supported for TV across the entire console range. Maybe they could have even implemented an "Auto HDR" feature like Xbox. I know I'm asking too much of Nintendo to put in some effort.

Ask people what they love about the Vita and they almost always say the screen.

The Switch now has that screen.

Whether or not it's worth it, is up to you.

Really not hard.
Bingo, and this 2021 OLED display obviously blows Vita's out of the water.

The strength of the new display (unsurprisingly) becomes even more obvious when turned on, immediately shining bright and clear from pretty much any viewing angle I tried. Honestly, it’s not an exaggeration to liken its vibrance to when the Game Boy Advance SP got an updated model with a far brighter screen, making the original Switch look noticeably dimmer if compared directly. Its colors are richer too, and I’m not kidding when I say Breath of the Wild’s grassy fields looked almost cartoonishly green viewed side-by-side.

Err, yeah. Sure.

So does the steam deck have an OLED screen?

I just don’t get the phony shock. It’s an upgrade for handheld. Not really worth it for me, but for handheld gamers it could be.
Yup pretty much hypocrite gaf in full swing. Apparently a 720p screen was super shit until the gabegear announced it was going to have one then it's totally fine now, same with fps apparently anything under 60 was pathetic and now 30fps is totally fine. Guessing oled would be totally amazing if nintendo hadn't used one but because they did it's obviously shit and outdated tech.

Ok I'm not the only one who feels this way then I guess. It's an uncomfortable device to hold for any extended period of time. I find myself using my pinkie fingers as a sort of cradle just to hold the thing. The shoulder buttons feel wonky to use as well. It just doesn't feel that great.

I preordered mine because I’m a shiny new thing slut. For existing switch owners, a new vibrant screen is an extraordinarily weak incentive. I look forward to putting them side by side though.

The Screen in the original Hardware was already outdated at the Release and now Nintendo gets praised for a step, Sony already did with the Vita.

I mean, if you have the extra cash, you use your Switch a lot and you mostly play undocked then sure it might be worth it. OLED is really nice after all.

Keep in mind these early impressions are always full of exaggeration and hyperbole. I still remember the first hands on impressions with HD rumble where everyone was like:
Happy Hugh Jackman GIF

And in the end it has basically just been slightly cooler (and sometimes annoying) rumble.

TBH,

I don't understand what is even controversial in what is being said.

Obviously picture perfect OLED contrast is going to make things look dramatically more vivid and even sharper than the Switch's former kinda shitty screen.

They are basically just stating the obvious.

Vita comparisons are quite funny when you think Sony actually backpedalled on that and went for LCD for the later revisions. Yet some people are acting like the OLED Switch is a scam, lol.
