The PlayStation 5 sucks, actually - Desperate blogger creates clickbait article and headline

So, I came across this stellar piece of gaming journalism: The Article

Basically, it can be summarized into the following key points:

- SSD expansion is a mess
- Smart Delivery is better then the mess PS5/PS4 has.
- No native solution to better improve older games
- No faceplates
- Playstation Plus sucks
- No Backwards compatibility
- No Quick Resume
- No Dolby Vision or Atmos support
- No 1440p
- Submenus and turning off the console is a pain

Instead of just posting the article and waiting for the inevitable flood of outrage, I thought to discuss my feelings on each point below.

The article starts off with the following unbiased nugget.
as we stare at the giant, ugly, easily damaged units sitting under our TVs
What? Giant I will grant you. Ugly, sure some people hate it (I personally love it). But easily damaged? How so? Are people randomly kicking the console or dropping it? My unit has not moved since I got it last year, and other then some dust it is pristine. You know you are in for a treat when somebody complains about a stationary console being easily damaged.
It's a shame, then, that the process of installing a compatible ultra-fast M.2 NVMe SSD is too hard for most people to actually accomplish.
Take off face plate, unscrew, screw in, attach face plate. Truly to accomplish this feat is an engineering marvel. Does the article writer assume everyone is an idiot? The XSX is of course the easier and more elegant option, but just because one option is easier than the other, does not make the other option hard.
Sony's console also supports swappable faceplates, a feature that would take some of the sting out of the console's controversial design. At the moment of writing, there are none on offer from Sony — who has also sued third-party manufacturers for producing their own faceplates — presumably so that the company can release exclusive themed consoles whenever sales of the platform start to sag.
They sued one company that was treading dangerous waters by calling the product 'Platestation', other plates are available now and none of them have been sued. And really, releasing plates to prop up sales, how does that logic even work?
This isn't the worst part of the console's design, however. The glossy black middle of the console attracts a mind-bending amount of dust and is also so prone to scratching that players have taken to using sandpaper to scratch it themselves in a way that looks more attractive than the random damage the console will inevitably accumulate if it encounters anything harder than a human fingernail.
What, how on earth are these scratches occurring? Does this relate to the previous point that the units are easily damaged? Once again, mine is fine. I agree on the dust part though.

The author then brings up ray-tracing as a slight against the PS5, when the PS5 has more games that allow ray-tracing and 60 FPS then the XSX does. Yes the ray-tracing capabilities of both consoles have been over-hyped, but blame the AMD implementation, not Sony or Microsoft.

Next the article goes on about how Smart Delivery and FPS boost are great features and the PS5 has nothing similar, with game upgrades on the PS5 being terrible. This part of the article I agree with, Smart Delivery is great and Sony could certainly have improved upon this at launch, but it appears they are addressing these issues with 2.0 clearly marking the version of the game and save transfers getting better. No arguments from me here.

FPS boost is also very well done, but it is not as great as it could have been with some games, having to choose between 900p/60fps and 4k/30fps on Far Cry 5 is not an easy choice to make. It almost feels as if the XSX should have been a bit more powerful, as the gap between XOX and XSX is just not as pronounced as the PS4 Pro/PS5 gap. But credit where credit is due, MS has a good feature here, just get around to adding more games please.
PlayStation Plus, for its part, also sucks. For a monthly payment of $9.99, a quarterly payment of $24.99, or a yearly payment of $59.99, you get cloud saves (are save files really that large?), monthly free games (of varying quality), access to the PS Plus Collection (downloadable versions of the PS4’s greatest hits), and online multiplayer features. Yes, you still need to pay a monthly subscription fee if you want to go online to play games you have already purchased on a console you have already purchased.
Playstation Plus offers way better games then Games with Gold, you actually get damn fine games with the former. And why bring up monthly subscription fee to play online? All consoles do that. The Xbox isn't magically better in this regard.
On the Xbox, those updates happen in the background — I've never once gone to the update menu and found something that needed manual updating — but on PlayStation, which promises automatic updates, I'm constantly having to manually do downloads in order to play up-to-date games.
I've never had this issue, my games update when my console is in rest mode. Anyone else have any issues with this?
PS5 games also do not support anything like Xbox's "Quick Resume" which allows players to quickly jump in and out of a given title without having to go through the hassle of reloading and logging into each game. Even with that fancy new SSD, every time you pick up your controller you'll need to start from square one.
Yes, Quick Resume is a fantastic feature, props again to Microsoft here. PS5 can offer similar functionality with activity cards, but it is just not the same. Quick Resume would have been a godsend for Returnal. That being said, I've never sat down to play PS5 and thought to myself that the 10-20 second for the initial load is unbearable.

At this point the author has some digs against the Dualsense (fair enough, mine are fine but numerous users have reported issues) and the lacking functionality of the PS5 as a media box. Now my LG Oled is good enough for my media needs, but it is odd that the PS5 comes with a media controller but lacks such features as Dolby Vision and Atmos support. Sony TVs support these for example, and it's odd that the flagship console does not. The media capabilities of the PS5 are pretty shit in general, so I don't disagree here.

The last gripes are about 1440p support and turning off the console, fair enough on the former (but seriously, how many people are we talking about here), but the latter is just silly. Sure the PS5 method is stupid, but it's one or two button presses more.

TL;DR: While the PS5 has flaws, for every good point the article raises, it has several others that make zero sense, apply to both consoles, or are straight up blown out of proportion. Feels almost like a paid puff piece, rather than trying to have a serious discussion.

But certainly nothing comparable to GamePass. And cloud saves are free for everyone on Xbox, you don't have to pay for it.

So Microsoft offering a choice between standard BC and 60fps is now a negative point ? And Series X, while being the most powerful console already, should have been more powerful ? lol...

The Switch sucks, a lot. No Bluetooth, poor hardware, etc. etc. But it sells well because people like their games. In the end of the day, that's all that matters no? PS5 already has A LOT of highly rated exclusives > 1 year of the consoles launch. Everything else will be improved overtime. Some fair complaints, most of it non-sense.

You're going to get these paid for shilly articles meant to degrade the competition's hardware.

Anyone's argument that it's too hard to put in an SSD seriously needs to get lost. I changed one on my ps4 pro and i am like the most technically useless peon on the planet, if i can do it, anyone can do it, and looking at the ps5, to me they have made it even easier.

I am at the point where you can not trust anything in the news anymore, it used to be politics and certain news organizations always putting some spin on something, now, it's so-called games journalists and useless influencers doing it.

Journalist says PS5 sucks!

Monday Night Raw Reaction GIF by WWE

You’ve lost your mind if you think PS5 sucks, I grew up with N64 they called that system “underperforming” despite having 10/10 games like Goldeneye and Ocarina of Time. I’m sure the journalist wrote the piece for shock factor.
Bottom line, PS5 gets the job done and accomplishes everything SONY wants it to do.

It's all about the games at the end of the day. It's the difference between deciding to buy a system or not. If it was about features or hardware specs nobody would be buying the switch. I bought it just to play donkey Kong and zelda.

I ain't going to buy an xbox series x just because its powerful or has enhanced backwards compatibility. I will buy it when it has a game that I have to play and cant be played on any other console.

I bought a ps5 to play demon souls and ratchet and clank. All the other stuff is just extra. I still would bought it even if it never had those extra features just to play the games.

The reason why xbox lags behind so much is because it doesn't have exclusive games that are must play in the same way Nintendo and sony do. Even though the system has amazing features and hardware. That's why they bought Bethesda and other studio's. To close that gap in games.

I'm not going to say it sucks but as someone who has a PS5 and XSX I think the XSX is pretty much far superior in almost every way. Shocking because last gen I never even touched my XO and always played my PS4.

I have both and sub to GP as well and I still spend 90% of my time on PS5. I do love my SeX, but it will not have all the games I like to play and a majority of my online friends or on PS still

Things I want from that list.
Quick resume
PS1-PS2 BC and PS3 would hurt lol. A Virtual Console like or even the PSP/PS3 Stores access to the PS1/PS2 games would be good enough

1440p for monitor support but the rest it just utter crap

Some are definitely annoying.

No official black console or Faceplates.
No dolby vision or atmos.
Can't swap the battery on the ps5 pad.
Bloodborne ps5 patch?
I had to buy ps+ to move my saves.
Disc drive is way too loud!

Good so far but definitely could have been much better!

then why ps5 is so successful?
Same reason Biden win the election, people are clueless... oh wait in the US more people buy Xboxes.

- SSD expansion is a mess
- Smart Delivery is better then the mess PS5/PS4 has.
- No native solution to better improve older games
- No faceplates
- Playstation Plus sucks
- No Backwards compatibility
- No Quick Resume
- No Dolby Vision or Atmos support
- No 1440p
- Submenus and turning off the console is a pain
SSD: not really, but it does come later than expected
No smart delivery: it would be better than whatever Sony has
No automatic improvement of old games: granted
No face plates: true
PS plus sucks: so does gamepass
No backward compatibility: it has ps4 BC, no current console has actual backward compatibility, but it would be nice
No quick resume: it does... On one game
No Dolby or atmos: 3D audio is just fine as it is
No 1440p: hardly relevant to a console
Submenus etc. Painful to the brain dead? Sure

All these points aren't false, but even all of them together amount to a bunch of sideshow features made by people who don't really sit down and play games.

I mean my use case is I sit on the couch, turn on the TV and console then pick a game and play for a while, even if I switch game I don't do it that often... The feature is Not really relevant beyond the tech demo, it's similar for the rest of the Xbox "benefits", they are not relevant beyond the list wars.

If it's just a bloggers opinion, why are you so angry/upset over some dudes opinion?

Just ignore it and carry on enjoying the console.

I'll never understand why people take to heart someone else's opinion regardless of how true or false it may be.

Some of the complaints are genuinely valid too, others a little confusing as it does have backwards compatibility though.

Fanboys careful clicking the link, a ps5 being crushed/destroyed might trigger some of you.

I never said it was negative, just that it was not an easy choice to make. Also if the console had been a little bit more powerful then FPS boost would have been more attractive, as you would get the FPS boost on the X version and not the S version. I am not claiming anything about the PS5 being more powerful then the XSX (I don't believe it is), just that the GPU gap between the One X and Series X is not enough to enable FPS boost on all X versions of games.

Question: Why does this thread exists?
There are many awful articles about almost anything, obviously written by fanboys etc. But you have now given that articles a platform + clicks. Just stop discussing this shit and go on. Ignoring something like this is the only way to get less of this over time.
Neogaf is a forum to discuss gaming related topics. God knows we have had threads about dumber things in the past.

Have you seen the games that have released on PS+ since the PS5 launched (including the PS+ Collection)?

Except it does?
I didn't write the article and in fact I am disagreeing with most of the points on it.
If it's just a bloggers opinion, why are you so angry/upset over some dudes opinion?
I am neither angry nor upset, I just thought it was an amusing article.

Just want to share my thoughts on each point:

- SSD expansion is a mess
It is not.
- Smart Delivery is better then the mess PS5/PS4 has.
A bit, sure. But I got used to it and Sony seems to be improving it slowly (120hz on PS4 apps, better save transfer between PS4/PS5, etc)
- No native solution to better improve older games
What?
- No faceplates
My PS5 is not supposed to be an art display, so I couldn't care less about faceplates (Xbox doesn't even have any customization so I don't see why this was brought up as an issue)
- Playstation Plus sucks
I've been subbed since it was first launched on PS3 and I can't complain. Awesome games and I get to keep them forever (as long as I remain subbed)
- No Backwards compatibility
This trully sucks, hopefully they can make a PS3 emulator one day which would also allow them to get rid of the PS3 blades on PS Now (better cost effective for them)
- No Quick Resume
I can wait a few more seconds for my games to load.
- No Dolby Vision or Atmos support
I don't have any equipment here that would be able to use these features. Same for VRR.
- No 1440p
Again, same thing from above. Most people play on TVs, there is no urgent reason for 1440p. Either way this can be easily patched in if Sony thinks it's worth it.
- Submenus and turning off the console is a pain
What? Really? LOL. I can easily turn off my PS5 in 2 seconds and the menus are as easy as it can get.

I feel like this thread is going to lead to some folks getting banned over warring lol.

I don't think any of the consoles suck personally. I enjoy my ps5, series x, and switch. They all have their pros & cons of course, but this article is kinda wack. Don't get too carried away folks lol

Is the quick resume on Xbox but not on PS5 because of hardware or software?

Software. Quick resume is exactly the same as resuming from putting the console to sleep which the PS5 already does. The memory is dumped to the hard drive and loaded back upon turning it back on. Quick resume does the same thing but for multiple games at once. Sony either just didn't think of it or didn't want to reserve that much more hard drive space for the feature when SSD space is already at a premium.
