Sea of Thieves had 4.8 million active players online in June

It’s been over a month since we released Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life into the wild blue yonder as part of Season Three, and since that emotional launch day we’ve been bowled over by the response from the Sea of Thieves community. From your reactions on social media to your fan art and stories of exploring the five new Tall Tales, it’s been amazing – and all this excitement resulted in our busiest ever month on the seas, with June seeing 4.8 million active pirates out on the water!

This comes after the game hit the #1 spot on Steam.

Mmm... I don't buy it. Something about this "Active" is directly correlated with GamePass mojumbo. I don't buy it. There's no way there's 4.8m active people playing this game.

What's their criteria?

It's the same thing that all DSPs like Spotify, TIDAL, Netflix, Disney+, etc do. Every one's definition of "played" or "active" is different. And they very rarely ever tell you what the criteria is.

Their criteria is the number of people actively playing the game. Sorry that it triggers you that they got so many players.
This game is such a piece of garbage. There's absolutely no way it's 4.8m active.

Has to be fudgery of numbers with GamePass. Like 4.8m "Claimed" this game or something of that sort. Or downloaded, played for 5 seconds, then deleted.

My issue with this game is I just don't like the movement. Everything feels so stiff, the animations, the responsiveness of the controls and actions. I simply don't enjoy moving around the world.

It'd alot better than when it launched, but I'm just not seeing it, like Destiny 2 is a better coop experience, and I think Destiny 2 is terrible.

Something is missing from modern day titles with this cooperative focus that older games had, Back 4 Blood is missing it too (at least in the beta), yet Deep Rock Galactic I feel has it, I'm wondering if it's a community issue.

This game charts during big moments (launch, launch on Steam, Pirates of the Caribbean update...) but it loses players quickly. People want it to be good but it doesn't have the legs.
Surely even you can realise how stupid your own comment is.
Especially after claiming it doesn't have legs...
The game is excellent and offers an experience that no other game does.
Is the game for everyone? Definitely not and I can see why people wouldn't enjoy it.
But millions of people clearly still actively play the game and continue to enjoy it each month.

Deserved success. Sea of Thieves is an extremely special game when playing with friends or family. It is just pure gaming fun and lovely shenanigans. The POTC update was fun albeit a little flawed due to bugs on launch. A perfect match though and the updates incoming are sure to be exciting and add a lot to the mix in Season 4 :) The future is bright for SOT! Congrats to Rare.

People literally cannot understand a game which adds a big free expansion would see a surge of players for a bit. Not used to the concept of free expansions I guess?

Also I think Steam is only the tip of the iceberg for the overall game’s population, it’s on GP since 3 years or so and people just return to it when content is added.

It says "with June seeing 4.8 million active pirates out on the water!"

So by that criteria they're saying it unique users actively playing the game for an unspecified amount of time... but I doubt you'll believe that. I'm sure at least 4 million people jumped into the game, immediately realized it sucked and then quit. Right?

It's been charting as a best selling steam game for months...deff no legs.

It depends how you measure legs. Microsoft can certainly sell the game. Again, it's big updates and marketing pushes are indeed effective to a certain extent. But the player retention drop off is just too drastic for it not to be a part of Sea of Thieves story.

If more people are playing 2016's The Witcher 3 than your big budget multiplayer game in 2021, that's noteworthy.

You don’t have to buy it, but I’d buy some Kleenex to wipe away those tears :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I know some people on GAF can’t grasp that this game is great, but if you want to check out the overwhelmingly positive Steam reviews you might all learn a thing or 2.

I don't mind games sucking. I do hate Devs that lie about the state of the game though. There are MANY instances that they lied about before the game launched. I know the game is better now, but it's still not a complete game.

Can we take a minute to talk about lies that Sea of Thieves developers said prior game launch about the content that is not there? : Games (reddit.com)

You're posting a metacritic score for a GaaS game from THREE YEARS AGO that doesn't take into consideration the state of the game now. This is the definition of disingenuous console warring.

What CONSOLE am I warring about bro? I'm just talking about the GAME. I'm simply stating I believe the numbers are bullshit. That is all. And that they lied about a lot of the games content. Which is why I do not support the game.

What console am I warring about?

I just randomly checked the Steam charts a few days ago and noticed that Sea of Thieves had plummeted way down. I think it wasn't even in the top 30 or something.

It's currently the 87th most played game on Steamcharts.

There are more people playing Dark Souls 3 on Steam at the moment.

This is how Microsoft sells Sea of Thieves to new players. Look, it's a fun cool guy...

Ya, that's why Rare has been releasing a steady steam of content and updates since March of 2018, because it is a failure. That's why Microsoft spent the big bucks for a Disney license and Disney decided to sign on, because Sea of Thieves is a failure. You're so smart. You and Men in Boxes should form an alliance, sloop up, join the Reapers and troll the seas and show all these Sea of Thieves kids what's up.
