Didn't see an announcement link or a trailer in the other thread, so I thought I'd make this one.

The original Quake is back for all platforms with a bunch of new stuff, and you can download it right now!
  • Developed by the excellent Night Dive Studios, responsible for the Turok 1+2, Shadowman, and Forsaken N64 remasters
  • New expansion "Dimension of the Machine"
  • All original expansions included
  • Local and online play, including split-screen and crossplay
  • On modern consoles for the first time with mod support
Check out the trailer:

More details:
  • Enhanced graphics (better lighting, soft shadows, touched up models, and MUCH more) - you can toggle these enhancements on/off
  • New addons menu similar to the console versions of DOOM, first addon is Quake 64 including the N64 version's soundtrack by Aubrey Hodges
  • Splitscreen on all platforms for both co-op and deathmatch, bots are included for deathmatch
  • Host your own servers as usual, or use the new matchmaking hosted on dedicated servers
  • Integrated voice chat
  • The new expansion includes new deathmatch maps
  • Steam version is a free update for existing Quake owners, does not overwrite original version, $9.99 to purchase new
  • Existing mods on PC are compatible with the new version as long as they don't rely on source ports, and vanilla engine limits have been raised

Fuck, Digital Foundry need to do a version comparison on this super quick so I can figure out what to buy it on. Portable Quake sounds fun (Switch) but if this has native 4k split-screen on Series X or PS5 that's a deal maker for me, or trophy support. Urg, decisions decisions. help me out here!

Edit: forgot Microsoft own this now, it's on Gamepass; of course it is.

FYI: Maybe it's changed already but if the game isn't appearing on Gamepass for you, search the store and you'll find it. You can download it for Gamepass from there.

I was really hoping for Ray Tracing which I think is great at enhancing older games.
I believe that's coming later? I mean, they did say something about next-gen upgrades coming later. So I would assume it's referring to RTX.

Also, have y'all seen this?

Apparently it's going to be available on Switch and PS4 on 8/27 for preorder.

PSA

the controller aiming is ridiculously bad! be warned! one of the devs said that they might patch it soon, but atm it's really among the worst on the market.
really bad acceleration and the aim assist feels like ass. the latter wouldn't be an issue if the aiming was good, but either way I would turn that off

Holy shit its been remastered by Nightdive, nice. They kept that one quiet lol.

And yes you can turn on filtering, AO, coloured lighting, dynamic shadows, basically all the effects to change the game into GLQuake.

What a cool surprise this is!.

Took a screenshot of the graphics menu on PC. Not shown here are the resolution, window mode, and vsync options, but they're in there.

I also covered up my Steam username info which is annoyingly shown in the menu:

The menus have full mouse control too, btw!

most of these settings are on console too, but resolution is only a toggle on console, one for super low resolution and one for high res

So, did they say why they are releasing this for Switch and PS4/5?

I mean, did they have a contractual obligation to?

Wasn't the point of the Zenimax acquisition to make everything new and not contractually obligated fully Xbox and PC exclusive?

I guess it makes sense financially to release everywhere and make the most money from nostalgia sales since it's an old game.

Kinda makes you think about the "per game" basis Phil Spencer talked about. Might we get other Microsoft first party games on Switch/PS?

Quake is an old game and this title probably didn't take much effort to produce. Think Minecraft Dungeons, a game that hit Switch and PlayStation after Microsoft acquired Mojang. You can expect old games that came out decades ago and games built around legacy platforms to potentially hit non Xbox platforms. Do not expect a new, built from the ground up Quake to hit non Xbox platforms.

We'll see I guess

wants to fuck an Asian grill.
Can anyone confirm if the console versions support keyboard/mouse?

Playing campaign prolly fine but I wouldn't wanna go into online deathmatch with a controller.

you can turn on filtering, but who would do that? the pixelised textures look great

No, 3rd party graphics mods with filtered detailed textures look great. There's a reason 3D graphics cards were born and it wasn't graphics performance improvement alone.

They're obsessed. Upon booting, you are greeted with:

My internet is connected at the moment so I'm not sure if it disables you from playing this 20+ years old game if your internet is down.

If you click addons, it wants you to create a Bethesda.net account (which I assume is where the Quake 64 addon is):

Just letting everyone know in case they're not into unnecessary shit.

Edit: Just tested offline. It still let's you play the game it seems. It tries to connect and times out after 20 seconds or so. This is on Steam by the way.
