there was nothing scary about this trailer
Wow, I thought you might be exaggerating, but you aren't at all. Absolutely no sense of tension or scares/frights in this trailer whatsoever. It's presented more like an Action trailer than a Horror trailer IMO.

There's some interesting imagery, but it's just presented/executed in a way that completely undermines its potential to be horrifying/terrifying. Not sure what the point of this trailer is.

Yeah this was middling but I'll give it a chance once it's released.

Well look on the bright side, at least the movie is not called "DemoNeill"

Looks more like some mystery thriller with horror elements than straight up horror movie. But could be fun.

At least he is changing his style a bit from the dystopian-ish grey wasteland with social commentary

I watched both Rakka (Neill's short) and Zygote last night. Both were good. Zygote's monster is the stuff of nightmares, so kudos to C ClanOfNone for that reco. Rakka was interesting, though it ends right before things get interesting. I wouldn't mind seeing a full-length film fleshing out that story. I'd like more of the events leading to it, plus what happens afterwards.

Neil Blomkamp has been a frustrating director to watch over time.

Only because I feel like he hit the ground running so hard with District 9, followed with a film like Elysium which was pretty good, and then just shat the bed with Chappie.

I only say that because District 9 is an absolute classic to me, and it bums me out that I haven't seen him achieve the same heights whether in storytelling, or filmmaking, since then.

I'll give this a watch without a doubt, but that trailer didn't get me pumped at all.

I think he's the sort of director that pairs really well with a talented screenwriter.
He reminds of director types like Ridley Scott.

Can't tell if this looks good or not. I've liked all his movies so far, even if they have kinda been getting worse...

They should just let him fucking do Alien 5.

Saw this a few days ago. It's a 5/10 at best. Felt very low budget, but upon doing some research it seems that it was actually filmed "in secret" during the COVID lockdown so I guess their resources were limited. The CGI dreamscapes are pretty cool, though. Can't say the same for the practical effects - the 'monster' design is cool but its actual appeareance in the film reminded me of the original Alien in a bad way (it's very clearly a guy in a rubber suit).

But anyway, the script constantly feels like it's going to go one direction but then falls short. Like when the Vatican Black Ops are revealed, I was expecting something awesome to happen. But then they all die off-screen lmao

This was a shit movie to be quite honest and I have a high tolerance for poor horror flicks giving them the benefit of the doubt

Working on an Aliens sequel that Ridley Scott had killed in favor of his shitty Alien movies that were him trying to retcon Aliens, and then Robocop Returns before dropping out of it.

Yes I know, James Cameron thought it would have been gangbusters, but the egocentric Ridley Scott shelved it, because he wanted to go ahead with his prequels' universe (Prometheus, Alien Covenant, and whatnot).

"I don’t know about you, but between Sigourney Weaver and James Cameron’s excitement, I might be more eager for Blomkamp’s movie, than Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant,” which the filmmaker insisted on making first. But it’s a long way from a great idea to a great movie, and it seems Blomkamp’s picture is some time off from being made. Until then, you’ll have to stick with the other movies in the franchise, including Aliens, which arrives on Blu-ray in a new 30th-anniversary package on September 13th."

I had a feeling..

Fuck.

I know his movies aren't the best (when looked upon objectively and critically) but the design of weapons and other shit is next to noone in my opinion..

He was on Rogan a short while ago and that aspect wasn't mentioned at all, like really? That semi real scifi alien tech design plays a huge part in why I like this guy's movies..

District 9
Elysium
Chappie

Awesome design when it comes to weapons, robotics.. remember that private Bugatti style spacecraft from Elysium?

And just look at this:

Age restricted? Okay here's a trailer

Holy shit how good is this? Very good, I was being rhetorical.

Those shorts are the Dark Souls of SciFi where it establishes a world but leaves enough questions for you to reflect on yourself.. Only in this case the material on it's own is interesting enough to invoke such curiosity instead of being vague because it's *cool* ...

I think Mike and to a lesser degree Jay feel the same otherwise they wouldn't made a HitB episode out of it; so much wasted potential..

Elysium? Is that the movie where everything would've been solved in 5 minutes if the Rich People from Space had sent a dozen of triage beds to poor Calexicans?

I think his work with Weta was highly influential. That's like half his aesthetic, the other half being an evolution of those Citroen and shoes ads.
District 9 was South African weapons and Halo props from his cancelled movie painted white. The Flood was recycled into the little cockfighting creatures, the Elites were turned into the prawns.

Yeah he (?) has a real distinct visual style in regards to, well let's say tech and stuff. Reading your post I'm sure you know what I mean if going by that first scene in the weapons factory in that Halo short, just sublime (for me anyways) Very real/raw depiction of SciFi tech that really resonates with me. When there where plans for him doing Robocop I was very excited. In that Rogan podcast he also said he's a big fan of body horror and that goes great with Robocop I'll reckon. Anyways...

Also like that factory where Matt Damon's character works in elysium, or that parole building (?) with that robot. Just awesome, love that movie
