You guys better read this, I've suffered a bit to make this post.

I've just played it for 30 mins or so. Its not for me but I can see people liking it. The "story"/dialogue is cringe level 900, they talk like no one that ever lived I've met in my life of any age and if they do exist I don't want to meet them. Its like someone watched Point Break + the Fast and the Furious and wanted it to be like that then they took amphetamines before they starting write the script. The humor is a mix of stuff a 16 year old would find funny but with a late-30s out of touch feel to it too, impressive.

Technically its both impressive and a mess, you can view this big map with all the online people and then zoom in and see everyone playing, thats cool, but v-sync breaks when you are in the hub and you get rolling scanlines going up and down the screen. The sync issue is probably just a beta problem though, its reminisicent of the AC:Valhalla sync issues on XSX at launch. The game has a chromatic abberation effect covering the whole screen and it would probably be sharper and nicer looking without it but no option to turn it off afaics.

The turning on the bikes kinda has this sluggish feel where it doesn't turn much until you get to certain point out from the centre of the stick and then it suddenly turns more, you have to hold R2 to go max speed but I don't know why you wouldn't want to ever go max speed, you press L2 to break and do powerslides and its kinda nuts you can turn on a dime so its the opposite of the normal turning in that way. L1 is turbo and it builds up over time, so you turbo, then wait, then turbo, then wait, which is a bit of a chore. It might be better if you could just turbo all the time but it made turning non-existent and that was the meta, the turbo refill rate and amount is tied to the bikes so that would mess with the progressions/(and I presume) mtx though.

Tricks default controls are bizarre with cross being backflip (you hold these controls) and triangle being frontflip, circle and square spinning left and right. Default landing controls are that it auto lands for you when you let go of the trick button but you can change it to be totally manual and you get a bonus for landing ok, good and perfectly, etc. There are a million customisation options for the riding and tricks so you can make it how you want but it was quite overwhelming so I just went with manual landing for tricks. You can make it right stick for tricks but then you have no camera control and a 3rd option where they say its "for steep fans" and you use R2 to preload jumps (I think, from the description, I didnt try it).

I just held down R2 all the time and then broke on turns at the last second but you don't really need to break all the time, only on really sharp turns and when you are going really fast after a downhill segment. It was the start ofc but I set the difficulty to maximum and came last in every race except one where I came first by a mile lol. You get more XP depending on the difficulty and since I was racing other players ghosts I think it was just matching me with the best times on the server when I chose max difficulty. You can presumabley race live players later on in the game or in the real game, I didnt get far enough to see though.

A really funny thing is the accessability screen reader is on by default every time you start it (or even go back to it from rest mode) so this robo-lady started reading out all of the on-screen text when I booted it up, including a really long message saying "this is an unfinished beta, etc" and I thought it was just part of the game was for 20 seconds :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Its not bad, but I didnt have loads of fun really. I got past every race no matter if I came last or first but that may just be because its the tutorial. The rocket suit flying was decent but a bit boring also since it was so easy, I got new bikes after every race so I could try a new event and the stats on the bikes are kinda nebulous.

I think if you like Forza Horizon 4 you will like this, feels like they've tried to evoke that with the "its just about fun! lolz!" feeling to races. I don't really have any drive to play it more, maybe will try more when my flatmate gets back home tomorrow so I can play with him. I can't be bothered writing any more about it now because I have to make dinner.

TL;DR - If you like Forza Horizon 4 then give it a go, if you like multiplater XP dopamine games you will probably like it.

I really hate how edgy and EXTREEEEEME this game wants to be. I also think it just feels a bit too scattered and unfocused. Basically, I wish it was Steep 2 instead.

It also runs poorly for a game that doesn't look all that impressive. Lots of frame drops and screen tearing on PS5. Maybe a beta issue, maybe not. Luckily the problem is not as severe during the actual events as in the hub place.

Hated the edgelord presentation, and uninstalled the beta after 30mins.
I have to say though, i watched CohhCarnage playing 50 player MP races later, and i kind of regretted uninstalling as those looked fun.
Still the edgelord npc's and dialogue is brain cell meltingly bad.

Honestly the game is so much fun, it actually caught me off guard as I went in with low expectations. The 64 player races combining mountain bikes, skis and wingsuits are pretty mental, especially when they chuck jets engines into the mix lol

Awful. It's The Crew 2, but with bicycles. Ubisoft's engine is far too heavy and cumbersome for this kind of game, I constantly felt like I was moving through tar. And, the mindblowingly annoying zoomer dialogue was just revolting beyond belief.

Why has Ubisoft decided to go down this XTREEM IN UR FACE LOL approach with this and that god awful hero shooter they are shitting out?

Also, if this doesn't have crossplay immediately it will be even more DOA.

It's no SSX3. That's for sure.

Because most game devs are old as shit now but still trying to be:

bring back 2 Xtreme.

Or better yet, Jet Moto. How crazy would it be for someone to announce a full blown, modern Jet Moto?

I didn’t like this game for the first few goes but I’m actually warming to it and may actually buy it.

Tried it on both consoles and the Xbox is currently on top due to the terrible screen tearing on PS5. PS5 really needs that VRR.

That’s how I felt too. I had been looking forward to this game for months so was really disappointed when I first tried it, but I gave it a few more tries and ended up really enjoying it. There are aspects about it that make me cringe but I just ignore all that nonsense and focus on the stuff I do like. The multiplayer races are just pure chaotic fun (although I will never enjoy flying through rings in any game) and I absolute love just putting on a podcast and picking a spot on the map to just explore.

I just really wish it wasn’t releasing quite so close to Forza Horizon 5.

Ya - what is it with the rings in racing games like this? I'm not a racing game fan, but having to play a game where you have to fixate on hitting rings completely takes all of the immersion out of racing down a big mountain. The rings in this game are really small and not particularly well placed in several parts of the mountain courses. Playing a game like this with a bunch of races with rings would be a real chore.

And, like others have said, the characters and dialogue in this game are absolute cringe. Does anyone find this appealing?

I find the actual events appealing, don't care about the dialogue.
Do you like the rings though? I feel like I am just chasing rings that are too close together. I barely even notice the mountain scenery because I am too fixated on trying to find the next ring (and not miss the next ring).

The little animations they added to skiing from Steep are impressive. The way you shift weight and do turns looks awesome. Still seeing if you can do edge to edge carving Ill check back in. Definitely more of a swagger freestyle look so it.

I agree completely. I often find the dialogue bad in games like this but I just don’t pay any attention to it. For me this game is great fun and I love the events, except for hitting the rings in the rocket wingsuit (I’m hopeless at flying).

Do I love every single aspect of the game? Nope. Do I have a great time when playing it and can’t wait for its full release? Absolutely.

I played it and i did the mega race too after i was forced to sit through an hour of tutorials with the fakest ass corny voiceovers

Nothing special about the game I would in fact say its pretty ass.

Everything is fun with friends though. Meaningless

I've played a lot these last few days since the closed beta. It's a huge map but feels so small at the same because there's nothing to do in the world beyond fast travelling to events. You could technically just ride or fly around or something but without a goal it's just kinda a "move around in big map" simulator.

The mass races are fun at first but once you're good enough to actually compete for the top spots it's super frustrating due to the insane cluster fuck of hit boxes bouncing around off each other. You could be doing fine, cruising in a straight line and then just get randomly pushed off course due to some glitchy hit box bullshit.

Also, there isnt anything fun about the entire bottom half of the map, the desert section. The only Sport designed for that area is the mountain bike and its just kinda boring. The snow areas are also where the best Wingsuit mountains are so you basically have 1 half of the map where you can skii, snowboard, wingsuit and then an entire desert section that doesn't really have any big mountains so you you're only option is to be on a mountain bike, doesn't make sense.

What this game really needs is another 2 sports to use in the desert area, I think MTX and down hill longboarding would have been good choices.

Overall it's OK for a few hours but once you fly around the map a few times and do a few mass races you're kinda done IMHO. The beta was a good opportunity to basically see everything I wanted to see without paying a dime, thanks Ubisoft.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
The game offended me with it's Gangster's Paradise cover, wtf was that shit 😳
As for the game, yeah like everyone else said.
Seems like Steep/The Crew

After playing more of it, my initial thoughts were correct. Deleted this. Game isn't for me, not surprising because no Ubisoft game has been for a long time now.

It is pretty much The Crew 2 but with Bikes and sking. Overall , it is kinda fun. I suck with the bike riding. I just need to work on the controls a bit. Not sure if I would spend 59.99 on the game. But for 29.99 and playing with some friends online seems ok for me. I can get a few hours of fun out of it on the weekend from time to time. That is how I play The Crew 2 now. Just jump in from time to time.

Yeah , it is one of those games that you just jump in a play for a few hours a three or four times a year. I feel the same way you feel about the game. It is really just like the Crew 2.

ANDS

King of Gaslighting
So this is in a TRIAL week period (with four hours of play. . .well less than that with you having to sit through forced intros) and. . .this is trying way too hard to be UBISOFT's Forza: Horizon. Even the introduction basically apes FH's intro with it dumping you into the different cars types to give you a taste of what's to come. . .except here the controls handle like dog shit and it's full of "Young person talk" (I've never heard someone say "ledge" as in "legendary"). Like there is nothing here that's speaking to me strictly as a a a gamer. Forza has you making an avatar that's almost surely younger than you but you aren't really the focus there; RR is trying to make you the focus and so it needs a narrative in the game to get you to care. Did I mention it controls like dog shit?

I also see a thread suggestion below me that says the game is full of MTX and that is almost painfully obvious once you get dumped into the character creator or when the game lets you know there's "tiers" to gear (which I guess makes sense as not all BMX bikes are the same). Still, none of what I played made me think this is something that absolutely needs to be picked up.
