The Woman horror GIF by Shudder

Anyone seen "The Woman"?
Adaption by Lucky McKee of the Jack Ketchum novel.
Great movie! 9/10
I did and actually.... I hated this movie.
Cool you liked it but this was a totally feminist movie to the point that they were beating you over the head with it.
But you did enjoy it there is a sequel and prequel you try and watch.

Whoop whoop, finally someone! Thanks for your reply.

Really? Now that's odd. By reading the trilogy and other books of Jack Ketchum I'd never ever guessed him to be a feminist. If anything "The Woman" is a slap in the traditional American family's face but to me it was just the next part of a story about a murdering clan of cannibals living in the woods 🤷‍♀️.

I didn't particularly enjoy part one and three though.

I don't think he was, but I think the filmmaker turned his story into some sort of feminist power fantasy.
I would have never seen it like this and I'm usually easily annoyed by this girlpower shit. I mean, yes there is a villain who happens to be a man but it's not as if the woman was pictured like pure virtue or something. Maybe it's because I read the books but anyway for me it's just a really good gory horror movie about some disturbed people.

I mean, I don't know if he is or isn't but the movie wasn't even subtle about it. Most of the men were unbelievably evil to the point it felt cartoonish. I half expected the dad say something racist. The women were either passive victims or helpful to another woman. Now this all may be a clever parody of what a feminist film would look like and if it is hats off to the director but I don't know man, considering the name is the Woman I don't think they were being subtle at all in making this a parody.

But with that said though there are things to like. It isn't an outright terrible movie.

I think that's the poison of identity politics. Showing a character who is an asshole - as well as a man - doesn't make it automatically a feminist manifesto imo.
I just wouldn't want a perfectly good horror movie being shunned because people think it's some stupid chick flick.

let's agree to disagree on this one :).

Watched willys wonderland, not too shabby and I liked the whole setup of the movie. Some questions were left open ended but overall a fun romp. 7/10 , definitely wait though the rental price is absurd.

and nic cage doesn’t even say a single line in the movie 😆

But it wasn’t just one man who was evil. From what I remember, the boy was evil as well.

Well, obviously because he was brought up by an asshole dad who has probabyl been brought up by an asshole dad before that.
The women were totally useless and stupid and have learned that from their mothers before, I guess. So as I said, I think the movie is critizicing fucked up family structures or even the "American way of life" but not men.

For me this one is a good example for a feminist shit show of a movie. It's not a horror movie but I think it's a better exmaple for "in your face- fuck you men" feminism, than "The Woman".

Don’t get me started on “I Care A Lot”.

I watched this movie recently called I'm Thinking of Ending Things on Netflix, and I just did not get it at all. Anyone seen it? Some people were labelling it as a horror which I found myself waiting for the entire time. Such a strange movie, it feels like nothing happens the entire time, and you don't really care for the characters.

The cast were mostly fine, but I just did not care for anything that was happening. Shame because it does start out with some promise and sets an interesting scene.

I guess I just wanted to give people a heads-up if they haven't seen it yet. It's not a horror film at all.

I watched V/H/S and Sound of My Voice.

Sound of My Voice... there's not much to say. It didn't really stick the landing. It felt like the person who wrote it was very deliberate and self-conscious about creating ambiguity, like they were creating themes for their work and it didn't feel very organic. Sure you can debate over the meaning of it and what the ambiguous parts mean, but there's no real reward to doing that. It was left too open to interpretation to the point that it doesn't seem to carry any meaning itself, so you're wasting your efforts analyzing something that isn't intelligent enough to deserve that exertion.

for V/H/S:
- the first tape (the camera glasses one) was very good. Absolutely didn't expect it to go there. Good body horror and creep factor. Man do people not know how to run down stairs though in this movie

- second tape (bf-gf roadtrip) wasn't that great. There's really no motivation present for the gf to want to conspire to kill the bf. I think they could've done a better job of establishing why she wouldn't just break up with him. It feels like they tried to hint at him being controlling but it just wasn't enough. Also a pet peeve is when the events take place seemingly just to scare the viewer without making any logical sense in the universe. For example, why would the gf's side-girl break in the first night and not do anything but steal $100? Why not kill him then? It makes no sense and is just there to misdirect the audience. There's no real point to the events taking place, so I lose patience.

- third tape (friends camping) was ok. It was interesting to watch but the actions of the protagonist didn't make much sense. Why lure these people out to the woods to use them as bait when you aren't... actually using them as bait? You just let them wander off and get killed? Was it just that she thought having a bunch of teens out in the woods would make it appear again? Dumb plan. It's funny that all these horror movies involve the most unlikely group of friends going camping together. Always the weird goth chick, the bro, the hot cheerleader, the nerdy guy...

- fourth tape (haunted apartment) was uh... weird. I didn't care for it. They never explained the child ghosts, di d they? When the bf came in, he bumped into them with his legs as he walked up to her, so they are physically present but... they weren't talking. Are they supposed to be the aliens he was talking to? It seemed like he was ignoring them and talking to some presence outside the door I thought.

- fifth tape (haunted house party) was good. Not as good as the first tape, but very enjoyable and good special effects.

I thought it was interesting (especially in light of the earlier conversation in this thread) that in all but one of the V/H/S tapes, the women were evil and led men to their deaths. I guess that makes it a woman-hating incel film? :messenger_grinning_smiling: I enjoyed it overall.

Not even sure if I'd be able to read "The Amytyville Horror" ...Couldn't even manage to read the plot of it without psyching myself out

I'm trying to remember the name of an old ghost movie - I suppose it was horror but more mystery from what I can recall. It took place in the 70's or 80's. A young boy sees the apparition of a little girl being murdered in the beginning, that ghost then asks the boy for help, and the ending involved some old house near a cliff with the ghost of the murdered little girl's mother.

Every horror fan owes it to themselves to play Shadow Man Remastered.

The audio design - especially the music - is second to none. The composer's a bona-fide GENIUS. The music is unbelievably good.

The game has a super dark and surreal tone to it.

Definitely a horror masterpiece.

So.... CANDYMAN COMES OUT IN A FEW DAYS!!! I'm so fucking hyped that I'm actually rewatching Day of the Dead and it isn't as bad as I remembered it. Farewell to the Flesh is a movie I liked because of the milieu in which it took place although neither can really be considered great movies.. but I believe the original Candyman to be amongst the best horror films ever made.

Anyone else a fan of the series?

Pretty good list, a reminder I still need to watch many of these. I keep forgetting to try and track down a copy of Near Dark.

Still have to see Near Dark myself. Kathryn Bigelow is a solid director.

I have a hard time deciding if I prefer the 70s or 80s for my favorite decade in horror. There’s still quite a few on that list I haven’t seen either.

It's not streaming in my region, and all blurays and DVD's I've found were all for different regions. I don't pirate anything, so that route is out. Maybe I'll check out eBay again later or tomorrow.

Oof that’s rough. I won’t pirate anything either unless I’m desperate (recently did this with an Abbot and Costello movie). Hopefully you find it soon and enjoy it.

Don't really ever hear about this one but I've seen it a couple of times. Definitely a solid dark fantasy movie. Another one I'd recommend is the chinese movie, Re-Cycle. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0498311/ Some really great imagery in this one. Only $7 on amazon, blu ray.

What have you guys watched lately? I watched Midsommar recently and thought it was excellent. Very tense, unsettling vibe throughout. Good performances by the cast and some quite shocking moments. A good experience.

Not sure if you ever got an answer but the movie is called, " The Lady in White."

Saw this it was pretty good,it’s a documentary/found footage movie abought a guy who supposedly murdered everybody in a small town, but the convict has another story the guy was photographer and had photos of that day the whole town was killed Won’t spoil it.

There's a new horror game called Tormented Souls which is the perfect mix between Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill 2 with an Alone In The Dark 1 setting. I feel it went a bit under the radar, so I wanted to point it out.

Some bullet points:
- Limited saves (need item to save like in RE)
- No inventory limit (like SH)
- Melee weapons are pretty useless and ammo is limited, so really need to be conserving resources (you get just enough ammo to kill everything if you don't miss any shots)
- Dead monsters stay dead (but old rooms may have new monsters as the story progresses)
- Quite many puzzles/riddles (probably 1:1 monster:puzzle ratio)
- Story progression is linear, though you often have to revisit rooms
- About 10 hours long

Just bought five more blu rays

House Arrow Collection
Tales from The Hood Scream Factory
Shocker Scream Factory
The Fog Scream Factory
The Exorcist 3 Scream Factory

Saw a great film called Caveat. Genuinely creepy in places.

Saw another called The Torment which had a nice idea but really poor acting.

I would be fine with other people turning in to zombies, particularly people I don't like. Remember the Simpsons episode when Homer shoots zombie Flanders? It would be a dream come true.
