Update regarding Horizon Forbidden West (PS4 versions now have entitlement to free PS5 upgrade, other games will have $10 upgrade fee)

They did the right thing, good on them for admitting the mistake. Looks like this will be the last crossgen game that’s given a free upgrade PS4-to-PS5.

No real reason not to get the PS4 version now.
What's more interesting about Jim's statement about $10 future upgrades is it involves God of War, GT7 and "any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment."

Which means there's more unannounced cross gen games.

They’ve been pretty clear on continuing to support ps4 for at least a couple of years after ps5 release, so that really shouldn’t come as a surprise.

lol this whole episode has been hilarious to sit back and watch

I preordered the $80 joint. I got my PS5 already and it's the version I wanted, but I also felt like if they said it should be free then they should honor that.

so are they giving people who pre ordered the PS5 version already a discount?

what a disaster

Jim Ryan has had to backtrack multiple times now. Stupid confusing pricing strategies are stupid.

they are only doing this to prevent a lawsuit since they previously worded it as a free upgrade

I you already preordered the PS5 edition, you might as well cancel it and change it to PS4 and save yourself $10. Although, if you preordered it digitally, not sure if Sony goes ape shit..... there's those stories you hear about cancelling digital stuff and they ban your account or whatever.

But hopefully, everything works out.

As some of us said in the other Horizon thread, just wait it out. Turns out all you had to do is wait less than a week and now the PS5 upgrade is free.

Lol get fucked Ryan.

I was with 70 dollar next gen exclusive’s but I’m NOT paying 70 dollars for a last gen game with ini file edits being called next-gen. One thing I’ll give smart delivery is they seem to make a clear difference what is and isn’t an actual next gen ground up title.

Interesting. It might be just Jim Ryan covering his ass in a sweeping statement just so that this controversy can’t happen again. But maybe there will be more crossgen games coming after GT7 and God of War.

I wonder what other first-party games might be crossgen. Sony has been so tight-lipped about the next wave of content for the last year, but I’m sure there will be answers on Thursday.

Thats the great thing about Smart Delivery.

Doesn't matter if you got the giant VCR Xbox One OG or the newest Series X. Buy it once and the OS figures out which version you get. Of course it doesn't go for all games. I think COD had some dubious shit where Activision separated next gen and last gen. But for many games, it just works. No worrying about if Game X is a free upgrade, $10 upgrade, or no upgrade. And cloud saved files all work no matter which system you hop back and forth on if you buy a newer system.

"Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free."

"I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment."

- Jim Ryan

So..
- Horizon gets free upgrade from PS4 to PS5
- God of War 2 & GT7 will be $10 upgrade
- God of War 2 & GT7 are cross gen confirmed (again)
- Any other cross gen games will also be $10 upgrade
Lol.

That's great news, but damn the next God of War is crossgen? Jesus fucking christ, move on. The PS5 is about to be a year old soon.
Both GT7 and God of War Ragnarök was confirmed to be crossgen months ago.

I think they aimed for a release closer to launch but I think pretty much everything has been delayed by more or less a year. I bet they initially planned to release Returnal and Ratchet&Clank in early 2021 and Horizon&GT7 mid 2021 and well, God of War possibly a late 2021 date(which was probably unrealistic to begin with).

Sony's clearly messed up here - as their fans posted over the previous few days, PlayStation deserves that extra money and we're lucky to have Sony's games. By giving the upgrade away for free, they're clearly devaluing the premium console experience that the PS5 provides. This is just a slap in the face to the real PlayStation fans.

At the end of the day, it was bad PR for Sony trying to nickel and dime, but the vast majority of gamers will not be affected as I don't think that many gamers have already preordered the PS5 edition. If so, you got to change the preorder to PS4 if you want to save $10.

But you can tell it was extremely important as they did the post on Labour Day weekend on a fucking Saturday!

The biggest hassle is if anyone preordered the PS5 edition digitally and now you want to test Sony's CSR cancelling it and rebuying a PS4 preorder. Reading those horror stories from gamers trying to cancel digital purchases you never know if you'll get stonewalled by CSR or banned.

No doubt there will be more.

But the best thing about Jim's statement (assuming he sticks to it), is his commitment to $10 upgrades for future games. Therefore, no more Horizon FW shenanigans forcing gamers to buy different editions or that +$20 combo platform edition.

If a PS4 gamer gets a PS5 later and wants to play it with PS5 quality, Sony has now committed to a simple to understand $10 upgrade path.

Only a small number defended them backtracking on their free upgrade statement.

Now that even Jimbo himself backtracked it, now what? Is Jim Ryan a traitor? Or the goalposts moved, but the brand is the brand, so the 180 is great now.
Everyone loves a good 180.

You joke but someone in this thread already stated to be buying the most expensive version of this game as a "thank you" to Sony for making games. (that he has already paid for).

Good on them and good for players.

But holy hell, some people are absolutely braindead, even here. Almost as if they scream Oh no, what have you done Sony? LET ME PAY MORE, IT'S NEXT-GEN

Oh yeah make sense, how much code do you think Guerilla have to write for each version? I can assure you, that these guys are not idiots, most of the code is written platform agnostic, OODLE KRAKEN is available on PS4, so no re-authoring (biggest most tedious shit in publishing game) for it to take advantage of the SSD, you can keep the streaming engine same, it's just going to work faster.

And lastly they will change details, like on PC game.
- PS5: Ultra AF 16x
- PS4pro: Low AF 8x
- PS4: Let's not talk about it, AF what's that

Hit compile and ship it. DONE

If the PS4 game is getting a free PS5 upgrade, there's really no point in a dedicated PS5 edition at $10 more.

The PS5 boxed copy should either disappear, or it gets reduced to $60 to match PS4.

But let's see if Sony leaves the PS5 copy still there for +$10 hoping nobody read this Labour Day weekend blog post and just mindlessly buys the PS5 edition.
