Update regarding Horizon Forbidden West (PS4 versions now have entitlement to free PS5 upgrade, other games will have $10 upgrade fee)

Lol at the people who defended sony on that thread

They don't know what to say now 🤣

Good move from sony for backtracking immediately and didn't take too long to address the issue
Not really, all that happened was something was pointed out and they ended up honoring what people were complaining about so that's good. Depends on what you said but for people who simply pointed out what was said vs what people assumed that's not the same as what you are describing.

Did you see, Playstation fans?! That is how things should be. That is what makes things right.

Anything that they promise they should deliver.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
Imagine not having a $70 next gen price and having seamless and free upgrades.

This is why consumers have to speak up and not just toe the company line like so many here were. I get you may love your platform of choice but you have to call them out when they mistep.

There's plenty of shit in my post-history that you can use as ammo to call me a fanboy or yadada, but my ability to read a paragraph is not one of them chief
on thursday you were going back and forth with me about how the upgrade path would still be a thing even though it clearly was not happening...and I was like wow your ignoring what is right in front of you, and you were like

"I can't willfully ignore something that doesn't exist my man"

so no you dont know how to read a paragraph chief.

My thoughts exactly, might as well get two editions for $10 less than the PS5 edition. What a shit show this thing is … 😆

Man …. some of you Playstation fans are scary af 😆
im wondering if the pre-order bonuses would carry over too? because if not then you miss out on that...although that can't possibly be worth 10 bucks.

"Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free."

"I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment."

- Jim Ryan

So..
- Horizon gets free upgrade from PS4 to PS5
- God of War 2 & GT7 will be $10 upgrade
- God of War 2 & GT7 are cross gen confirmed (again)
- Any other cross gen games will also be $10 upgrade
But wait a minute… there were people in the other thread telling me that, despite mentioning Horizon Forbidden West in the same paragraph, they weren’t including it in their free upgrades because it wasn’t a launch day game. Despite Jim Ryan literally singling out Horizon as a free upgrade in a separate interview.

Huh, bizarre. Maybe next time just accept when a spade is a spade guys? Expecting an ethomaz ethomaz laughing emoji in 3…2…1 :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Hilarious.

Quick summary and reactions:

- Sony states last year Horizon FW will get a free PS5 upgrade
- Sony backtracks with PS4 and PS5 being separate purchases. No free upgrade. No $10 upgrade. Closest thing is a +$20 combo edition
- Gamers revolt
- Sony releases a Labour Day weekend change on Saturday at 7 pm
- Horizon FW will now have a free upgrade (like last year's statement), and future games will now have $10 upgrades (clarity)

Gamer 1: Great news. Sony honouring what they said last year --> For the gamers
Gamer 2: Sony caved in. They should had stuck to zero upgrades as last year's statement involved "launch games only" and Horizon's delay to 2022 doesn't count anymore --> For the balance sheet

What part of "launch games will include a free upgrade" do you not get?
In written English it’s important to contextualise something as part of the whole paragraph it’s written in.

If I say;

‘The rabid dog broke in to my house. I was bitten. I contracted rabies’

It’s logical to conclude I was bitten by the dog.

It would be stupid as fuck for me to then say later ‘I actually contracted rabies from a squirrel bite, the dog just broke in and left, separate sentence baby’

He said launch, but not console launch and every game has a launch so he means every cross gen game is going to have free upgrades at launch.
Sony was full of shit from the beginning about Horizon's launch anyway. So putting it in the same PR statement was fluff to perk up the paragraphs with a heavy hitter game.

The free upgrade statement was from 2020 and PS5 launched in Nov 2020.

While the other games had launch dates (except Destruction All Stars which got revised to earlier this year), Horizon never had a stated launch date ever.

It was never a day one launch game to begin with. And considering it's now releasing in Feb 2022, it shows it was way off the "launch window" no matter what.

i really dont like this, thats what happend when you lie about making games just for the ps5, when you introduce the ps4/ps5 games you need to offer free upgrade like xbox and not charge for it. i was fine buying the ps5 version yeah because i have one, and i know ppl who doesnt have are going to buy the ps4 version but what happend to the ppl buying the ps4 version when no need to purchase the ps5 one? then just say its a ps4 title with a ps5 enhancement.

The $10 upgrade is a money grab to begin with, in hopes gamers think the PS5 version is so much better it's with paying more. It's their attempt to reset prices to a $70 US tier with a new generation, but its heavily linked to last gen BC PS4.

That would be like Sony and MS charging $10 more for games playing at PS4 Pro and One X upgrades before PS5/Series X came out. Yet, neither increased prices into two tiers.

It also doesn't help that Sony has done everything from free upgrades to $10 upgrades to trying to sell Horizon FW with a +$20 PS4/PS5 combo edition. All over the place as they are trying to feel out which strategy maximizes the most nickels and dimes.

The good thing about today's statement is that going forward it's a clear $10 upgrade fee from PS4 to PS5 for future games like GOW and GT7 etc.... Looks like Jim and gang tossed in the garbage any future pricing shenanigans.

This might break your mind but I’m buying the game for my PS5 and I’d still like to know WTAF Jim Ryan was thinking with this. He’s admitted that they know they offered the upgrade for free originally, but then tried to change this due to the economic effect of the pandemic. Really strange nickle and diming.

The thing is they are making it harder than it has to be.

Want the game on PS4 and PS5? 70.00
Just PS4.... 60
Just PS5.... 60
If the game is PS5 only... 70

Instead they want to throw the 70 price tag on everything that has PS5 on the box.

Gamers would be more understanding if they had schemed it out like this.

Sounds reasonable.

Except, the majority of Sony's first party heavy hitters are all cross gen. Some arent like Returnal or R&C and DS, but I think the rest are. And the "rest" are much bigger franchises than the prior.

That means DS, Returnal, R&C are $70, but GT7, GOW, Horizon FW, Spiderman MM are all $60.

Sony is trying to reset prices to a new $70 tier, but if their heavy sellers are cross gen $60 games, it makes games like R&C and Returnal out of whack at $70. And who knows how long Sony will do cross gen. They already said they are going to do it for more years, so that means they'd be pigeon holed for $60 for years for many games.

They'll never get to their $70 mark they are trying to establish. Not saying that is bad for gamers. It's good for them. But from a business strategy point at head office, it will fail.

That's nice to hear, but most will likely get the PS4 version now to get the game cheaper. Sucks for the games moving forward the $10 charge. However after 2022 I doubt there will be any cross gen games left.

Well it would force them into a hard decision then, cross gen for potentially 10/copy less or just go full steam into current gen.

And of course it could always be adjusted for "budget" games if it would have been 39.99 last gen then 49.99 current gen.

It wasn't meant as a hard and sticky rule, just general guidelines. I feel the same should be applied to EA, Activision, Ubi, and all other pubs as well.

There should be some risk/reward for going cross gen vs going full next gen instead of trying to stack the deck in your favor.

Whether it was a launch title isn't the issue and is hardly relevant. Sony said the upgrade was going to be free. Their blog from last year before the PS5 launched says the upgrade was going to be free.

Launching on a system and being a launch title are two totally very different things.

Exactly.

Its like when MS tried to bump up Xbox Gold pricing lately. It was so short lived (I think they reversed it in 24H) I dont even remember how much they tried increasing the price. I remember people saying it was double, but I dont know the exact amount. By the time I got around to reading it, it was already reversed so I never dug into the details. But given that, a big jump in Xbox Gold pricing, fuck that. Its not like the service is any better and the Games with Gold are as bottom of the barrel you can get. Forget it.

I dont think there were any Xbox gamers defending it saying..."Yup, yup, yup. Business is business guys. Got to accept Xbox Gold prices gotta go up sometimes. Nobody ever said online prices cant go up".

People balked at it as a money grab, and MS 180'ed.

Leave the brand loyalty shit at the door. Everyone likes certain brands over others, but when it comes to money and being ripped off (especially when a company says one thing and does the other), you can at least be universally linked in arms with every other consumer calling out corporate BS.

Sony's recent Horizon FW pricing wasnt even a $10 upgrade fee like some games do. They tried to go the extra mile making gamers either buy each platform copy separate, or you bite the bullet and buy the $80 combo copy. So even a gamer fully knowing they'll do PS4 gaming and upgrade later to PS5, it's actually a +$20 fee.

Sony is stupid they should only release Deluxe Editions on Launch for PS5. Then offer stripped down versions down the road. They should even let you use dualsense on the PS4, just keep dualsense features available only in the deluxe editions.
i1wdzVK.png

I hope whoever came up with the pricing is fired.
i1wdzVK.png

Im happy for the poors though. All they had to do is keep the Tsushima price model. Instead they had a communication fumble and lost at least 10$ x 2 million on launch day.

Sony deserves my money, preordering a month before release. Most likely the most expensive version as a thank you for all the unique, best games in gaming.

I’ll go half’s for the PS4 digital copy with a family member who I game share with ‘cos I’m cheap like that :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Obviously good news. But the trust is lost and will take more than this to repair. In the end this is just normalizing the $10 upgrade as a generous offer when even that is honestly bullshit. The Ghost upgrade barely had anything to it.

This is damage control while they tell you its price hikes in the future. Better than a house on fire, but still hard to celebrate.

I don't disagree at all. I'm actually glad they corrected this to an extent. Even though Horizon 2 has completely left the launch window. With that said, there is no point of buying the 69.99 PS5 version, when an individual can just now get the 59.99 PS4 version and upgrade for free. Unless this gets corrected as well.

Sony's execution on cross gen has not been as graceful as what Microsoft has done.

I mean Microsoft did pioneer pay to play online. Sony followed. And we all just took it.

Kinda pissed about the final GT7 confirmation, it’s obvious now that because this needs to run on 8 year old hardware this’ll just be GT sport with a proper GT campaign. As great as GT sport is to me, I want a bigger, better evolution for the series that’s truly next gen.
You can make most car sims as next gen as you want right now, just depends how serious you are.

Current sony leadership are a bunch of clowns.

70$, crossgen everywhere, ps5 upgrade fees, ps exclusives on pc...

Absolutely agree.

The PC ports need to stop immediately and they need to start focusing on treating their real customers better and adding reasons to buy a PlayStation... jut because it is selling now doesn't guarantee anything for the future.

Too many distractions from where their attention should be...on the console.

This is what all companies do at the moment, they test the waters and if they get enough hate, they reverse it. No hard feelings against Sony is just business. Still the strange thing for me is why the PS4 version is still 10 USD cheaper. I mean I understand the argument about inflation but that should apply to both versions.

So many people can't see past that. Any time anyone criticizes Sony the response is "they are selling all they can make," or "record profits" but they can't see the forest for the trees.

There's a lot of time for them to either make up for the missteps they have made early, or continue to make them and chip away at the reputation and brand.

Early success does not guarantee continued success. There are many companies that start strong and die, or start slowly and grow. I'm not saying Sony will fall victim to either of these, but they can degrade goodwill and consumer confidence, if they keep making unforced errors like they have been.

That's because xbox next gen titles don't have as many upgradable components.

In the example, Horizon, they literally have more foliage, and more coral and underwater is more detailed - i expect God of War will be like that too, not sure what GT will bring in that regard tho.

its not just and FPS or res boost like most Xbox games.

That's also why they are making all their new games (xbox) exclusive to next gen so they can avoid what sony is doing. It's easy to do when you have half the user base Sony has on last gen consoles.
Yeah, if I was a console warrior and didn’t have option to play great racing games on my console, I’d also try to pretend Forza Horizon 5 doesn’t exist

Probably best to leave the bait alone. They will likely find themselves banned sooner or later.
