Dune (2021) sequel allegedly tied to HBO Max performance

Will you sub to HBO Max to watch Dune?

As reported by Variety, HBO has yet to greenlight Dune: Part 2, and will allegedly look to its predecessor's performance on HBO Max before making that call. Ahead of Dune: Part 1's release, a spinoff TV series titled Dune: The Sisterhood has already been set in motion at HBO Max, making the studio's decision to not stamp off on a sequel film even more confusing.

So we're basically guaranteed a prequel(?) series about the Benny G - but we have to rely on HBO Max to get a proper part 2.

I was hoping for a really quick greenlight based on the reviews of Part 1 (which are largely excellent, from what I can see).

I was already planning on seeing it in Imax - but I suppose I'll sub for a month to HBO Max and watch Dune a second time that way.

How do they decide if HBO Max performance is good?
How many accounts watched it and the dollar amount attached to those accounts?

The Suicide Squad for example, it had a budget of $185 million. It had 4.7 million views on HBO Max within a 17 day time frame. So $15 per account.
That's about $70 million dollars, over a 3 week time frame.
That's pathetic and is a loss of money. Even with it's box office revenue it's still a loss of money.

It's nobody's fault that cinemas are too expensive and actors are overpaid. Vin Diesel getting 54M for "I am groot" line is the very best example here, I'm not going to sponsor this kind of BS, it's not my fault the producers overpaid him and now they want that money back, from me. Besides, why would I want to overpay for going to a cinema when I can have a comfy couch experience at my own house, which is all around a better experience?

Granted, digital releases on day 1 might encourages piracy more than ever before, but this would even further prove that people don't value going to cinemas that much. I think blockbuster movies are moving into similar spot where AAA games are, where they are getting ridiculously expensive to make, for reasons that might be valid or not, and the only way to compensate that it to charge us the consumers extra. But it's too late anyway, once people got the taste of VOD they're not going back, most if not all will simply wait for the VOD release since they're already paying monthly for the service anyway.

Yup, that's partially why I'm concerned. I can only hope that the army of nerds who love Dune will deliver where DC Suicide Squad nerds did not.

Is that vin diesel number legit?

They greenlit Wonder Woman 3 from 1984’s performance on HBO Max.

There were only about 12 million HBO Max subscribers then. Now there are 45 million.

I don't honestly think it will happen, I firmly believe Dune will (sadly) end up just like BR2049, which is considered an art/masterpiece by those who went to the cinema, but at the end of the day wasn't a commercial success. We will brag about Dune here on NeoGAF, but the rest of the world won't be able to appreciate it.

As for SS tho, I think the marketing campaign is to blame here, all the trailers made me feel like the producers making laughs at me with the comedy-like approach, I had this sort of "haha, the first movie didn't make much money so fuck you now you're getting this ridiculous bullshit as a sequel instead" feeling... Seriously, if it wasn't for my friend dragging my ass into the cinema I'd never feel any need to watch the movie on my own, but turned out I liked it a lot. But I cant imagine how many fans of the original movie are there who didn't like what they saw the trailers and never gave the sequel a chance.

Is that vin diesel number legit?

Reports say that's how much he earned for Groot "role" for all 4 movies the characters appeared in. But even if it was "just" 10M, it's still overpaying, it could've been literally anyone, even some random junkie since the character is a full GCI and the voice is modulated anyway.

There’s no legitimate source on that. Only thing I could find is a word salad click bait site proclaiming it. No Hollywood Trade has said that he made more than RDJ.

True, although keep in mind RDJ and the crew were nobodies before MCU (except Johansson), whereas Diesel was a globally recognizable actor on a roll thanks to Riddick and most importantly F&F, so most likely he could negotiate a much better deal than the rest of the cast until MCU bowed up.

That story doesn’t make sense. The reason why Dave Bautista was cast as Drax (at the same time as Diesel in the same movie) was because Jason Momoa originally was cast as Drax but Marvel (remember this was in the cheap Perlmutter days) dropped him when he tried to high-ball them on his pay. So the internet clickbait BS doesn’t fit with reality.

I really want to see this but the chances of a sequel are not exactly high.

No HBO max here in Canada either. I think it is all through crave. Not sure if that counts.

You're probably right, and that makes me sad.

Reminder:

Though many opted to watch “Wonder Woman 1984” at home, the film still generated surprisingly robust ticket sales — at least for pandemic times. “Wonder Woman 1984” collected $16.7 million from 2,100 North American theaters, the best opening weekend to date in the coronavirus era. In terms of HBO Max viewers, the studio said nearly half of the platform’s retail subscribers watched the film on Friday, with millions more viewing through cable or wireless access. HBO Max, which launched in May, had 12.6 million active users as of early December.

They greenlit Wonder Woman 3 after only 6 million people watched it on HBO Max.

HBO Max now has 45 million subscribers.

Villeneuve said they'll film it next year when they get the green light. So it'll be out in 2023 most likely. George Miller is going to spend a decade making Furiosa.

Are they making another Blade Runner. I thought they left it with a satisfying conclusion.
Oh I thought 2077 was absolutely sublime. But that universe is too awesome to leave alone. Maybe a show or something further ahead in time showing the result of the
replicants can have kids revelation?

2077 is great, but it does take and ending that was left open in the original Blade runner and closes it. I liked the way the original left you to think about the reality of the world and is Deckard a Replicant or not.

Oh yeah, Blade Runner OG is tied with favorite film ever with Aliens for me. Probably above it. But I think the Director's Cut kinda showed their hand that Deckard was a replicant. I think 2077 really opened up the world a lot more.

I want an "outside the city" replicant resistance type thing. But not shitty.

That sounds to me like an action film....which would suck. Because Blade Runner at its core is Film Noir detective story.

The only person who cares about that is Ridley Scott.

And what is this 2077 people keep talking about? The movie is Blade Runner 2049. Cyberpunk's subtitle was 2077.
I was just quoting QuantumZebra QuantumZebra . He is a dumb Bulldog fan so what would you expect. GO GATORS!

Also I care about the mystery do stop saying only one of the greatest directors ever is the only one.

WB is being run by monkeys. Complete tools. They are going to kill the movie industry and in the process their own jobs.

No one will ever make a $200-300 million straight to dvd movie which is what HBO streaming is. The most expensive tv shows cost them like $80 million and they had 10 hours of programming split across 10 weeks bringing in a consistent revenue stream for at least 3 months. 2-3 hour $200 million Movies to streaming makes no sense whatsoever.

Yeah but you can't keep rehashing BR1 over and over. BR2077 kept the noir beats but I'd say it was a sci-fi drama / epic to a degree as well. Lean into the apocalyptic side and have a mix of the 3.

Maybe instead on an action film you just have one where Replicants secretly replace people in power and in the end no one knows who is a replicant and who isn't. the final shot could be the big bad and the investigator our both replicants but opposed through methods, so diversity of thought wins out in the end.

That could be a cool invasion of the body snatchers-style twist. A cyberpunk world in constant paranoia.

I'll go support it in the cinema like every good nerd should when a big budget well reviewed sci-fi flick hits, then once I've seen it I'll pirate the fuck out of it

I'd honestly believe that Patty Jenkins was already contracted to make Wonder Woman 2 and 3 before the sequel was even released.
Oh god surely not, that second one was unbelievably shite, I mean fuck me not even a load of beers and kebab could make that thing watchable and they're letting her loose on Part3, do the people that greenlight these not even watch Part2!?

Is it weird I don’t even know who pays for my HBO Max sub? That and Disney are probably included in something I pay for, but I don’t have some line item to point to…

I couldnt be more sick of hearing about this movie. Been like 2 years of delays and dick sucking around this film. I plan on watching it on HBO Max day 1, but my god enough already.

Maybe I'm missing something here.

If it does gangbusters at the cinema BO and rolls in almost or above a billion, then WB will still only greenlight it based on HBO Max viewing figures?

What?

I think they are prepping for a soft BO and are hoping to fall back on HBOmax in a PR blame shift to explain why they don't greenlight part 2.

I would have to extend for at least 1, maybe 2 more months to get Dune. Think I'm gonna unsubscribe and shoot for theatrical. Can always resubscribe if needed.

I saw someone watch Suicide Squad 2021 on their smartphone. Made me wanna throw up.

Movies are made for the theatre experience. I will NEVER settle for the home theatre experience when it comes to the first-time viewing of a new film. I WILL go out in public regardless of whatever manufactured crisis the government tells me is happening. I WILL get overpriced popcorn, drinks, and a candy. I WILL get annoyed at people in my vicinity checking their phones because its just part of the experience. I WILL hold my piss during the third act of the film because I drank too much.

You can watch Dune in your home or apartment, its a free country, but you are not actually experiencing Denis' film. You are like a soulless golem consuming a bastardized product. May Allah bring death and disaster upon your family.

Almost like Satan from Isaiah. He had Seven I wills though and you only have 4. Also he wanted to dethrone God, and you want to go to the movies. But similar non the less.
