What would an 'AAA' VR title look like to you?

Saw this regarding Firesprite who have more recently been known for some PSVR work, and while this title might not be a VR title. It got me to thinking what would the elements of a AAA VR first party title look like. Would it have be an existing/established IP, would it have to be equivalent to AAA graphics given the difficulties VR presents in that area, would the game have to come bundled with PSVR at a discount etc

For me?

A generation defining VR game on par with Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Half-Life, Portal, Resident Evil 4, Bioshock, Halo Combat Evolved, or Demon Souls. Alex from what I hear is the first approching that for VR, and I wonder what else is coming down the pipe, so to speak.

To be more precise-
A VR Action Adventure on par with Uncharted 2.
A VR Action title on par with Devil May Cry.
A VR JRPG on par with Final Fantasy VII, Xenoblade DE or Dragon Quest XI.
A VR RPG on par with Kotor, Mass Effect 1/2, Witcher 2/3.
A VR Horror title on par with Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil, Dead Space.
A VR Horror Action on par with Dead Space 2.
A VR First Person Shooter on par with Halo Combat Evolved or F.E.A.R.

You know when ultra casuals rushed out to buy a Wii for Wii Fit?

That in VR form will be the first AAA to me.

It looks like Half Life Alyx

also....
RE7
Skyrim

And now GTAV and RDR2 are fully playable in VR. All you need is a decent graphics card and a Quest 2

I know this has already been mentioned, but it's worth repeating that one of the best true "AAA" VR experiences is already out there via Half Life Alyx. It's the correct answer for obvious reasons.

Also, Microsoft Flight Simulator btw, it's an absolute mindboggling ("AAA") experience with good VR hardware.

The best PSVR graphics like Blood and Truth and Hitman look very detailed already. I expect something similar to those, but at a higher resolution and less constraints.

GT7 in VR will be great.

I think a proper (ie not half assed) Battlefield or Call of Duty in VR would be crazy. I've recently been playing Pavlov VR (native on Quest 2) and just the very act of reloading is mindblowing, because you have to actually remove the magazine, replace it, cock it and then fire. Other little neat tricks like where you can flip an AK47 magazine out with another one (removing one step) before cocking the gun.

Other than yeah probably Half Life Alyx. Haven't played it yet (waiting til I have a more powerful GPU to enjoy it in all its glory) but it does look amazing.

I feel like a lot of VR games are either short tech demos or just rhythm or exercise games. There are some great implementations though, like Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is absolutely fantastic. Would be cool to have a Star Wars themed RPG (a -la Kotor) but in VR.

People have been saying VR is the future for about 30 years now, which future is that?
The usual apologists will be here soon bleating about sky high sales figures, how it's already taken off, how lighter headsets will be a game changer, how wireless will be a game changer, how improved resolution will be a game changer....etc.

Why hijack this thread with something unrelated to OP's question, though? There already are plenty other VR threads where that particular subject has already been discussed.

full psvr2 support in gta 5, gt7, re village, potential ace combat 8 + half life alyx and many console players would change their feelings about vr as a gimmick

plenty of games did a good demonstration of VR. the big barriers are still technical like ease of use, constantly calibrating the controllers and hassle to plug and play .also image quality, shimmering and low textures are a pain.

Battlefield in VR would be insane. These are the types of experiences that are going to drive mass adoption.

If you're interested in a nuanced driven discussion then the future is kinda both now and in the future. I mean.., at least for many seated simulators and Alyx it's in some ways right now - If you have great hardware and you're looking for a marvelous extension of the 2D screen. But nothing is binary, and much is subjective, people are different, so it's not yet the future for everything under the sun. I don't give much of a shit about VR going mainstream right now, it will mostly be an enthusiast driven market for a while yet. VR is a series of tech inventions, and iterations of that, and some are more mature than others, some is yet to be invented (like the current general lack of sense of gravity, and even touch, smell and climate, in a small package). Some of it "needs" a couple of generations still I guess, and not the least form factor may be about 5-10 years away from a breakthrough. Image quality wise it has been doing strides and is near mature (again, mature for an easy leap over from 2D). The complete all-in sci-fi package, the "it will ruin people's lives and the planet"-version is about roughly more than twenty to forty years away if I had to take a wild guess.

TLDR; "VR is the future" is all about the context and the specific goals.

Fromsoftware could bring back King's Field to life in VR with today's standard. A full on dungeon crawler rpg.

As much as I hated doom eternal, I’d be day one on a VR version, just because VR so much damn fun. Just the jumping and platforming around would be a blast lol

Yeah as great as Half Life Alyx is, it's not really the title that will get the masses going "wooooooooooooooooah". They definitely need a recognizable title in VR. I bet a lot of young gamers (especially those who haven't played on PC much) don't even know what Half Life is, or at least have never played through any of them.

I felt like Half Life Alyx was kinda preaching to the choir. Doubt they really "converted" anyone in the grand scheme of things.

On IGN (just recently) HL2 lost to Rise of the Tomb Raider on it's bracket (in the 1st round) for Best Game of All Time. Lol.

Chrono Trigger losing to Burnout 3 (in the 1st round) and Arkham Asylum beating Mario 64 (in the 1st round) is fucking killing me.....

Yeah, gaming changed around 2007 or so. Go into a gamestop and you'll see what I mean. People willing to shell out $60 for a new cookie cutter game. It's sad.

MW beat Goldeneye? Lmao.

This game would be the 3rd Horizon game, first person. Aloy is a sidekick so you can see her in screen. Available to play on the TV or in VR.

Their other project, a brand new Wipeout (with normal visual style and normal gameplay, forget the mobile game) also available o play on the TV or in VR.

The amount of A's is just a way to describe the production values of a game so a triple A VR game is just a game with very expensive production values, in that sense, most of the Exclusive tittles for VR are in some way or another between AA and AAA.

I would guess that the most triple A VR native games are Lone Echo or Alyx.

Jesus Christ. Well at least:

- WoW beat Fortnite
- Fallout NV beat LoL

The way they split those games up is really odd. I'd have expected them to at least match the genre.

My AAA VR title would require a AAA VR headset, the Index is pretty good I'm sure. But I'm talking a headset that takes up no more real estate than Geordi La Forge's visor, when they get there and it has our full or close to full real life fov, 6K+ resolution per eye, excellent lenses or projecting the image directly into our eyes/brain (non-obtrusive) and of course 120fps+, eye tracking and full body tracking down and touch. Essentially I want something that passes as my own personal Holodeck, till they get there (or there abouts), it doesn't matter how good the games get, it will remain niche and i'll feel disappointed by it!

Saying that, I still like that VR is a thing and despite what I just said, I like it more than most do it seems. I think you can guess what my dream VR would be from what I already said above, a Star Trek game based on the Enterprise/DS9/Voyager, where you start as an ensign in Starfleet Academy and work your way up to be captain, space combat, away missions, even a Holodeck in my Holodeck, count me in!

Genuine eyeglass or Star Trek visor sized devices are at least 15-20 years away (if the lenses are possible at all), and the first several iterations will be significantly less comfortable to use than even existing headsets as they'll be MUCH heavier than standard sunglasses, and it'll all be supported by your nose and ears. Quality contemporary headsets (like Index) distribute the weight evenly across your entire head with padded helmet-like contraptions. You'll likely be dead or too old to move/care by the time you get something that's small and light enough to satisfy your demands, so be sure to have someone put one in your casket. Like people in the 80's thinking we'd have flying cars and Hoverboards in the early 2000's, folks tend to wildly over estimate technological advance. The reality is almost always the least exciting and most common sense prediction

Yeah, the brackets in the 1st round are actually ridiculous.

I know it'll take a while, not convinced it'll take as long as you think, maybe with the current way of doing VR, which is clearly a stop gap at best until someone comes up with something far more viable. Like I said, I like the current iteration, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Of course some of the things I want are not viable anytime soon, but a man can dream!
