Tales of Arise |OT| Back in Our Good Graces

Im really enjoying this game just got to the snowy area,but with the power of these new systems why does this game still doesn’t show on your character when you put on different armor sets,is it so they can charge you clothes dlc?

Yeah, sadly it is for that exact reason, costumes have been a big profit for Tales and other JRPGs for awhile now, but there are quite a few In-game costumes for everyone in the party, the 2 main characters in particular get costumes by the end of the game that look better than any of the DLC ones IMO.
 
Great game, not liking the constant super serious tone though. I am missing the standard Tales comedy moments.

Also wish Go shiina was making the music.
Most Tales games are kind of serious with end of the world tune. Example, Tales of Abyss, one of my favorite Tales game, kind of super serious most of the time. Most of the arise comedy moment is in the skit like Shionne being a super glutton

damn, I never thought I would put 15 hours into this game. Tales used to be (for me) a game you'd play until one of the heavy hitters came out. Now, it's one of them.

Also keep in mind the game keep tract of thr costume you wear during in game cutscene beside the anime one. It would be kind fo endless if every armor have to look different in the cs.
 
I juat got to the final area and justn noticed the character menu deisgn "change" Before it is kind everyone stand together in a row and now it is like Alphen isd leading everyone to battle.

So iam now on the way to the fifth lord and up to now the game its good. Not awesome or breathtaking. Its just a normal RPG experience. Iam playing on hard up to lord 4 but figured out its not worth the hassle so i went down to normal.

My biggest issue with the game is the battle system. Its literally just button smashing and trying to stay away from the monster.Your team is quite useless and when 3 people go down its quite annoying to get them up again. Battles are literally just button smashing and trying to get team attacks and you charged ultimates out. Later on you just blast 2-3 team attacks pro fight and its over.

I prefer a good turned based combat system with combination attacks and strategic descisions over that real time combat. Most real time combats are just annoiyng turds. The battles in Tales of Arise are quite too fast to enjoy them and boss monsters are just item spamming to keep your team alive.

Between boss battles you just around and farm items and stuff to sell to buy revive items and items that can fill up your HP gauge in battles so you healer doesnt stop healing or reviving.

the skill system boring as well. You just buy stuff and it feels like it makes literally no difference aside from being able to use more skills in battle.

The most fun i had with a Tales is still "Tales of Symphonia"

I tend to get quick bored with Tales of Arise because of all those cut scenes and party banter while running around.

Some battles are quit annoying because bosses seem to have attacks that you jsut cant avoid like the 4th lord

She spams those 4 tornados like hell and you can only disrupt the first one. After that there is no option to disrupt them again. I had to fight the dragon alone because it was easier to just let the party die and focus on damage. Before you can revive all of them she will just spam her 4 tornados again

So FF7 remake was complete garbage. Anyone else hate the remake but like this?
I don't think FF7 R was garbage, it was just another soulless corridor game like FFXIII with forgettable vistas and void of any personality. I did enjoy it enough to replay on Hard mode as the combat is one of the series standouts for me and you can skip lots of things at leisure anyway.

But Arise has more variety in scenery, more charm, more freedom... just more of everything basically. Its def. a more fun game to play imo.

Change the control to Manual, you're playing on Semi Auto, you will be able to change the direction of your attacks that way.

EDIT: Go into the battle menu and change this option, you will see Semi-Auto in your game change it to Manual.

I'm liking it a lot so far, but for the love of god can JRPGs cool it with the

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" after a character dies?

Or yelling their name.

It's such an old tired cliche that thankfully has seen its decline in movies and television over the past 10-15 years to where you really see it anymore, but it's still in full abundance in JRPGs.

When the writers are putting together these scripts how do cliche alarm bells not go off in these writers heads when they think to put "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" for the billionth time? It takes you right out of the moment and totally ruins it.

Just started this tonight. I am torn on whether I want to re-map regular attack off of R1 or just try to get used to it. I have Genshin Impact's control scheme embedded in my muscle memory right now, so I look like a total spaz trying finish even easy fights. Not feeling the story so far, but I'm really early on. I'm sure it opens up later. Graphically it's a pretty big upgrade over past Tales games. Performance has been rock solid for me at 4k/60fps.

Thing is you will probably barely use regular attacks once you get a full deck of Artes. Its mainly about using those on the face buttons in succession, and throw in a boost attack when you're on cooldown.

Finished the game and did the post-game content. I really enjoyed this and the time spent working on it since Berseria really paid off. It's great looking, sounds great, and plays well. It feels like the development team was refreshed and went into this really liking what they were doing. I think I like the base system for this most of all out of the 3D Tales games since aerial combat feels pretty good in this instead of a being a token thing you can do in other games. I also really liked the individual systems for the characters in combat. While the story isn't terribly groundbreaking how it's composed, plays out, and sticks to its themes is really good. The characters really compliment that too. They're grounded but have personality without getting too much into the silly shenanigans that tend to dominate a lot of Tales titles. The sheer number of chats and how they're presented really fleshed them out well and it never felt like it was just filler.

I do have a few complaints. On gameplay, the actual Artes themselves are a little boring for most characters. It's very standard fare for the series which is unfortunate coming off of Berseria which has a lot of personality in those. The party AI is a bit dumb and the commands don't really work quite as well as I hoped. Battle balancing could be a little better, it feels like you do too little damage and the enemies have a bit too much HP until you hit a certain threshold. That could be softened a bit. Accessory skill transfer being introduced earlier and having a better tutorial might help with this actually. Alphen kind of breaks the game after a certain point with the right setup too. I'm not terribly enamored with the titles = skills system. It's kind of nice but it's not much different than just getting it by leveling. This is especially true since some titles aren't available until later in the game or you need to clear something to do something else and that requires you be XYZ level too.

On the story side, I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the villains. They're not bad but they're not really that much of presence in the story as other Tales. The story works well as is though since it has goals they're moving towards and it's more about overcoming the situation rather than any single person. However, getting to know them more and would have been nice, especially for a few of the areas. I also was hoping for a little more out of the sidequests. I did like how some of them did have follow-ups but It was little lackluster overall. Also, the ending could have been setup a little better. I mean the resolution is kind of obvious especially since the story was moving that way but I would have liked to have seen a few more clues to it and also plug up a small plot hole while they're at it.

Overall, I'd say the game ranks pretty high for me on the various lists you could do for the series. I'd actually like another game in this setting too especially if it could explore the world setup by the ending. There's a couple of questions I had too that they didn't answer.

I hate it when sidequests reward you with

the best fishing rod in the game after catching all the fish. I guess its for quick farm boss fish to sell?

shorter cooldown on her boost gauge, whatever the perk is called. I figure it helps a lot there against waves of magic spamming mobs.

Didn’t think I’d actually ever use any of the owl cosmetic attachments, but those ’angry eyes’ glasses on Shionne are … ABSOLUTELY …EXQUISITE!

Another part i dont like about Tales of Arise are those stupid costumes. You gather all the owls just to get items that dont really fit into the game. Why would i put Angel Wings, Devil Horns or other stupid stuff n the heroes.

They should have focused on more real armors or alternative outfits. Would have made that game a bit better. I like it more in Dragon Quest 11, where specific armors changed your appearance

That’s what I thought till I got those angry eyes glasses on Shionne and now I wish I could have put them on her right at the beginning. It just fits her character perfectly. Jeah i put the rose hairpin on her and law got the sun glasses it fits with his agent suit

Finished the game.

Didn't finish all the fishing, the arenas, or some of the optional bosses (level 6X Earth Temple and 7X Air Temple, and the level 9X bosh rush).

Ending was sudden? I was expecting a "what happened to everyone" after the end cutscene but nope! Here's your new game+ save game, now go grind. All in all the writing and story wasn't my cup of tea. I think I kept playing for the owls, mostly. Combat was fine once you've unlocked all your shit, first half of the game was average at best and things only got fun once they took off the kid gloves. JRPGs need to stop with the 10 hour tutorials if they ever want to reach mainstream success.

Hoping there's decent DLC or a Director's Cut edition that fixes the shortcomings.

I would give this...2 points more than Ni No Kuni 2 and 1 point less than Dragon Quest 11.

Agreed, I loved the city building minigame.

But the combat played like something designed by an intern one afternoon, which meant you needed a ton of other shit to do just to keep you from the fighting.

The ending is rather cringe. Overall the level of cringe was on the low side for me, i've played games in the franchise with more of it. But all the forgiveness shit I couldn't really get behind.

As for the optional fights, idk why their level is so high. They aren't for NG+. But, you can easily beat the Gnome at level 55 ish anyway, perhaps even lower when on a lower difficulty. And i'd wager I found the Sylph even easier. I guess they wanted you to play a few of the rifts first or something.

The leveling was weird in general. When I did side quests and stuff I would eventually be on level with my story enemies and they were so easy I had to change to Hard. But after a short while they would be 3 levels ahead of me again, making hard mode bosses more of an item sink. Even after doing all elite monsters, fishing, basically everything aside from the post-game dungeon, the final boss was 2 or 3 levels ahead of me. But he was still very doable on moderate so w/e. Don't buy into their DLC.

There's a couple of still art pieces near the end of the credits that show what folks were up to but that's it. I definitely would have liked a bit of showing what everyone's reaction to what occurred and them adjusting to their lives afterwards.

With the skills, does anyone know if skills only apply to nodes they're linked to within the spheres? For example: "AG restored after critical hit" does that only work when using the art within the same sphere? Or does it apply universally?

Because the characters have multiple skills that are repeated and I'm wondering if learning all of them just means it increases the effectiveness of said skills.

They're for the character as a whole so getting them increases the effectiveness of said skills. Some might be a little more potent than others though? I know that after I took one of the last Flame Charge nodes for Alphen, the increase in speed to powering up his Blazing Sword in battle was dramatic.

Finished it yesterday. By the end I was set it to auto-battle, as battling the same enemies over and over was boring me stiff. That said, the plot remained interesting towards the very end and the game was gorgeous, all around.

A couple of nitpicks:

1 - Why the anime cutscenes? I understand it's a Tales series staple, but the game looked absolutely stunning and most of those scenes would have worked perfectly fine in-engine. It would have been cheaper too - they hired Ufotable, a pretty snazzy animation studio, to handle the anime sections.

2 - As Shouta Shouta mentioned, there many story beats that were left underexplored or that could have been expanded upon at greater length. Namely:

  • What actually happens to the Lord that wins the Crown Contests? Killed and transformed into some monstrosity?
  • Renan society could have been MUCH, MUCH better explored. We ended up glimpsing very little of it. Seeing an imperialist, brutal mage-supremacist society from the inside would have been interesting.
  • We ended up being told very little about Shionne's childhood in Lenegis. How was it growing up with the thorns? What about her parents? What were her circumstances? We are given hints here and there but that's it.
  • The whole "Great Spirit of Rena" thing could have been pulled off a little more gracefully.
  • Vholran as the last boss? Really?

Agree with the spoilers

The Crown Contest winners were transported back and absorbed by the Great Spirit IIRC. That one huge boss in Rena was supposed to exist out of astral energy from several past lords. Its like lots of other topics kind of cast aside. We know there never was a Sovereign at the helm at all, it was an experiment on slaves that only succeeded twice, with one fleeing and the other ruling in Dahna. Who spoke in name of the Sovereign then? The people did take the Sovereign's words to heart. There is nothing on past life on Lenegis, something they could easily explore with Shionne.

The big bad being sentient astral energy was kind of lame as well. It was hinted throughout the game but it actually pulling the strings and brainwashing original Renans to capture humans to do its bidding was kind of far fetched.

As for Vholran. He also was criminally underused. All we know from himself is that he had no ambition, just wanted to wreak havoc. And records state that he was also captured, and also a succesful Sovereign. He was a dark image of Alphen. He wielded Ice, he had dark clothing, he was evil. But why he was sent to Dahna (to check his stability or mental behavior or something?), kind of eluded me. Especially since the previous ceremony failed because of the maiden, not Alphen. Who was supposed to be the new maiden anyway? Him crashing down was out of the blue, actually kind of funny. He just became a jobber after defeat, clearly exploding multiple times but always coming back to troll the party. For a final battle it held little weight.

The lord who win the contest probbal;y got the rawest deal possible. They probably went low on buget by the time they got to Renan portion of the game. I mean everythign before they find the spacecraft was awesome. Alphen is SOOO goku, have to find the space craft he came from like Goku and technically use Genki Dama without permission lol. A better question was how Shionnie get down to the planet as there are no spacecraft available during the contest. I also want to see the aftermath of the life on the Lenegis. The renans are very smart and technologal advance but not to the point they can build spacecraft. I mean i guess they got peopel good enough to maintain the Lenegis function. I have to say this is one of the happiest ending Tales game have in over 15 years. The last time it was this good was in Abyss. Vholran is a bit better than the great spirit boss fight tbh.

The game has opened up the further I got so that's nice at least.

I fixed the combat system in my head.

Hear me out: you can animation cancel into a dodge at the cost of AG. AI can do it to. One change that will make combat 400% better.

Edit: I also agree with the spoilers about the end boss. I laughed every time <the boss> appeared and tried to menace me. Such a tryhard. I ended the game on level 59, btw.

Hard isn't really worth it against bosses. You'll just burn through more resources. For regular mobs, well, you can kill them easily anyway. think Hard doesn't hurt here as you supposedly get more rewards. But just switch it down when on the verge of facing a boss or elite. Unless you're on level or higher, then it seems hard mode is okay. Still, bosses take long enough on Normal imo, and your AI will still KO.

If its pushing MT, it seems sort of. You don't get money after battles which I don't think was always the case in this franchise? Not sure. Orange Gel and life bottles is expensive, esp. early game.

You can sell a fuck ton of things but money goes just as quickly if you buy a stock of gels and new weaps. Generally though I always had enough items to see it through, without grinding money per say. Sell those dozens of mats once you've made the weapons from it. They're useless and mid to late game you get like 4-8 of the required mats per fight anyway (esp. if you keep the meter blue and cook). Armor? Completely useless, you can't even upgrade it unlike some specific weapons than can be boosted into Refined and Supreme.

Yeah, I agree with the spoilers.

The other one that came to mind for me is.

The planets were supposed to be one? Why were there 2 planets then? Did something happen in the distant past that caused the creation of Rena and Dahna? Also, exploring the Helgan civilization alongside the Renans would have been a great second half. I mean we kind of got some but I would have greatly enjoyed seeing more of it.

Wow the phantom battles I didn't look forward to but they turned out to be the best side quest and best battles in the entire game for me. It didn't even take that long. Their health bar goes rapidly down against a level 100 party and the best loadouts. It was awesome.

I'm on the edge of buying this, what scares me, however, is how most JRPGs I have played over the last few years lack balance late in the game, whether it's Persona 5 or Dragon Quest XI, they are great games but halfway in you are just walking through the battles on autopilot, something which gets very tiresome when a game crosses over 40+ hours.

I'm just not ready to bore my way through 20 hours of worn-out combat systems towards the end of the game, but man, it looks great and people seem to love it, so I'm struggling to make up my mind here.

I just finished the ship and I'm still really enjoying it. I will say one aspect that hasn't changed is the skits in Tales games are always 5-10 lines too long. I hate the ones that are like

"Ok, that's settled. Let's go!"

"...."

"What?"

"Nothing"

"*Stomach growls*"

"Don't tell me you're STILL hungry"

"Hmph"

"Fatso!"

I made that up, but you get the drift. I hate when they fucking tack on these useless lines that aren't cute or funny. Give it a rest.

Tales is one of my all-time fav JRPG series, but they have entirely too much dialogue.

I find the more annoying one’s are between Alphen and Shionne where they basically say absolutely nothing through the whole skit:

”what’s wrong Shionne?”

“I- it’s nothing”

”Uhhhh ok”

”It’s just that- nevermind”

I get that they want to point out they have a hard time talking to each other, and it makes some sense near the beginning but having skits continue to play out like that all the way past the fifth lord it gets pretty damn old.

I‘m warming up to Arise as one of the best Tales games out there, but yeah they definitely could have left a few of those skits on the cutting room floor.

Well, the canon reason is that Shionne believe she must die to safe the world this she doesn;t want to forge meaningful relationship. Keep in mind she through she would die after the fifth lord. At point Shionne want to say it but can't. Noticed how it never happen again after the spaceship?

I really haven’t found that the case with this at all, the combat has stayed pretty enjoyable throughout 40+ hours. It’s not turned based so it’s not really like Persona or DQ at all, you’re dodging, reading enemy attacks, looking for openings, keeping combos going etc. and it’s a lot more involved than just spamming the same skill over and over (in fact it actually punishes you for spamming the same skill too many times).

Skits should totally be revamped in the next game when hopefully they have your party walking around with you. Just press R1 to hear them talk and animate if it makes sense, and if you walk too far away it just cancels the skit.

Or if that’s too hard just have them talk while you’re exploring normally.

The steps forward this games takes are great, but they only make the outdated elements of the game stick out even more.
