Pretty much. Nintendo still behave like its the 80s and 90s when it comes to the PAL market, when the entire gaming industry has literally moved on. It's unbelievable. There's no need for it with the technology we have anymore.

Theoretically, I should be able to use the N64 controller on my All-Stars version of SM64, right?
Also if I say picked up that Genesis collection that already exists on the Switch, I should be able to use the Genesis controller with it?
Checkmate, Nintendo.
Against me, I'm gonna be buying more shit I guess...

I did use the NES controller in Mario 35.

Hnnng that Banjo-Kazooie...

I'd 100% drop $60 for a remaster BK on Switch alone. Imagine Goldeneye on this thing? If they could pull that off with online multiplayer like holy shit. But probably not.

I never play on my son's switch, but can somebody clarify this for me.

Does this mean you can only play N64 and MD games with a expanded sub, or will you have the option to buy the games you want individually?

Nah, NES was. Atari 800 technically, but that was my dad's.

64 was huge though. To this day that is the separator for me between retro and modern games.

Damn. A little shocked. The N64 controller was a travesty. If it weren't for the Intellivision it would be my least favorite controller of all time. I also think Rare mostly sucks.

bender

What time is it?
Wow. I love the 64 controller. My only gripe with it is I wish the handles were angled outward a little bit more. Rare was awesome...

The controller felt like Nintendo had two different designs for what it should be and just had them fuck to create an unwanted love child (three grips designed for human who only have two hands). Mario 64 and OOT were groundbreaking. I can kind of understand the love for Golden Eye and PD as couch multiplayer always elevates enjoyment. I also really appreciate the design of those games in having more objectives as you raise the difficulty level. But as shooters? They are passable given the control and hardware limitations and outclassed if you'd been with the genre since its' inception. The rest of Rare's catalog would be an easy pass. Still can't believe Microsoft bought them, though I do have a soft spot for Kameo even if it's not great. Viva Pinata and Nuts and Bolts are legitimately great games. People seem to love Sea of Thieves too. I'm glad Rare has found their footing. /ramble

Honestly I can't even describe it. Playing games in the 90s starting early at like age three or four was an unreal experience. Before I knew how to read or write or even speak well I was playing Sega Genesis and Playstation and practically being fully immersed into these amazing games. Well, the Sega Genesis games were just very fun. But a year later with the Playstation? Can't even describe those days, the games mixed with the memories are sublime

Playing Gex, going to the beach and pier all day then coming home to play more Gex or maybe some Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back in an air conditioned house on a hot summer day. That was probably the most vivid memory and best day I can fully recall. But there were so many good times with that Playstation. And then the N64 came and pretty much changed my life

You are just a baby. I still remember getting in fist fights in high school over heated SFII matches on the SNES.

It's official, I'm going to have to pony whip both you you N64 chads when Mario Party Superstar comes out.

Dude I can't fucking wait for that game to come out! But you facing me in Mario Party, that's like a baby dove with one wing entering the domain of the Calamity Ganon :messenger_sunglasses:

You'll pop my Mario Party cherry and I'll take your crown.
You still haven't played Super Mario Party yet? probably not a bad thing tbh. We call that shit Super Connection Error Party these days. I swear, like 65-75% of the games you play? They're going to end up with a communication error and the game blanks out

Edit: No, I'd say closer to 80% of the games. Because I've played about 105 hrs pf the game. Each game takes roughly an hour to ninety minutes and I started recording all my COMPLETED games since the online was announced. I have about 15 games recorded, but I know I've attempted well over 70 games. Probably 70-90 attempts at games but maybe 15-20 of them actually went from start to finish. That's the one thing I worry about for Mario Party Superstars; I hope they get the servers right this time. Super Mario Party was like a test, the real deal starts with this next one

The doubt in how this is going to be handled leads me to believe this is going to be ultra drip fed. The additional sizzle reel of games will likely be what they expect to release by September 2022. This is going to be snes NSO 2020 - 2021 levels of drought here.. Not sure I can get behind this for more then $10 extra. Prove me wrong Nintendo.

I'm surprised at the general negativity on an enthusiast forum like neogaf, I think 20$ a year was not very expensive to begin with.
You’d think an opinion like this would be the norm.

But the truth is, what most “enthusiasts” really want is Nintendo hardware to be priced $149 tops at launch, their games to drop to bargain bin price a week and a half after release, their first party to be console exclusive for no longer than six weeks, and their online to be free forever just because.

And even then they’d be bitching that Nintendo is asking too much and should go third party, and half of them wouldn’t touch Nintendo hardware if they could get it for free and with an extra threesome with their two favorite pornstars thrown in for good measure.

Meanwhile, people are happy for Castlevania ROM collections that cost as much as a yearly NSO subscription and include four games that can be perfectly emulated since the dawn of time.

Yeah I'm seeing people trashing Nintendo for their prices while for example Sony wants 80 EUR for their new releases, some of them frankly pure shovelware. And I'm not trying to make this a fanboy platform war, I own and keep buying PS stuff too, but yeah somehow some people here thinks Nintendo should charge cost of materials for their hardware, they compare specs with other hardware and think prices should somehow be proportional just because, as if it's a commodity. They think old software should have no value and new software should just because it's new regardless of quality, etc.

Like it or not, Nintendo makes premium software and the hardware that goes with it, you may not agree but the market does, they set a price for their stuff and enough people finds the value because what you get it's more than the sum of the parts. Sure for example the N64 controller doesn't cost them 50$ to make even adding packaging, shipping and taxes, but that's not the point. Yes a Chinese controller of similar characteristics can be 10 times cheaper, but here you are buying an iconic original design, it let's you play N64 software with the original control scheme, wirelessly, in the same machine you have currently hooked to your TV. That is the value, that is what you are paying for, not the plastic.

It must have been your first console.
Master System
Game Boy
Mega Drive
SNES

N64 is the GOAT.

Seriously though, during the N64 period Nintendo released some of it's best first party titles ever. Mario 64, two amazing Zelda games, the best Starfox game to date, F-Zero X which i argue is still the best F-Zero and even a couple of games in "lesser genres" like Wave Race 64 and 1080 Snowboarding that i don't think have been bettered yet. The only game missing is Metroid.

This wave of first party titles is far superior than their output on, say, the Gamecube. Mario Sunshine is not as good as 64, Wind Waker and TP are great but not as good or groundbreaking as the N64 Zeldas, Starfox wasn't even made by Nintendo and it was mediocre and the Wave Race/1080 sequels weren't as good either. Only F-Zero GX was good (though not as good as X IMO, fight me) and that was made by Sega. Also, Metroid was a masterpiece and that was made by Retro. I really don't know what Nintendo was doing during the Gamecube era.

Japan getting Custom Robo 1 and 2 is cool. For all the criticism they get about their legacy IP, it is pretty rare that they just put something in the vault forever.

I wouldn't mind Nintendo hardware that costs as much as nextgen, games costing $70-80 again like the SNES days, and paying even higher online service fees if:

-The hardware was good
-The games were of more consistent, 90's quality
-The online didn't suck

It's not about being cheap, it's about them being too stingy while treating us like cucks and delivering shit. I bought Castlevania Advance Collection as soon as the product page loaded because I simply want to have it there when I want it. Paying a fee to play old games I already have for a limited time isn't what I want. Switch consolidates pretty much every old game ever in one place except for Nintendo games and it feels shitty to reward their behavior.

The thing is it doesn't even really solve the problem of playing N64 games. You will still need a real N64, an emulation setup or whatever, if you want to play not-insignificant games like Goldeneye. A new pricing tier to play a drip feed of N64 and Genesis games, to me, is a slap in the face and a joke. Maybe if it started with over 40 games, the online was reliable and the pricing was on point.

So you can play Mario Kart online but the online sub is a bit higher? I don't own a Switch, but I just got a bit closer to buying one. I can't deny I love that game and to play it online would be the dream. Plus, F-Zero X is coming out as well.

N64 games you’ll need the expanded sub. But most of those MD games are already on the eShop in various collections.

OK, but that’s too many “if”s and “I want thing”s.

You know what you‘re getting for your money here. Nothing is being hidden.

The point remains: subscribing to NSO for their retro games service, for the entirety of the Switch’s lifetime, would still cost less than buying all those games individually. Games you’ve probably bought at least once on VC in the last 15 years.

And even if we don’t want to discuss how playable games like Goldeneye can still be 25 years later, Goldeneye is unlikely to be republished ever again in any official form. These “what if”s aren’t really constructive for the discussion. You know what NSO is going to offer. You know what it isn’t. You know that what it won’t offer, you can only play through original hardware or emulation. It’s been like that for every official digital retro games service since the 7th gen. The only difference is that now, you can only access the games through subscription.

I don’t understand why we’re having the same discussion every time. I could wager some pretty money that if Nintendo had put the ROMs on sale again, the arguments here would be exactly the same - and I’d win, easily. This discussion went the same way when Nintendo restarted their VC on 3DS and WiiU. People were complaining Nintendo was gonna sell you the same games, again and again, with their every new console, forever. Now they’re offering the games through a subscription that’s infinitely cheaper than rebuying everything again, and people are complaining. Like 80% of you don’t have an emulation machine within arm’s reach, and the other 20% just deny they have one so they can tut-tut whoever engages in discussions about emulation and piracy.

The bottom line here is: if you want to give these companies money for their old games, then Nintendo’s current option is way cheaper than you could have dreamed in the Wii era. If you don’t, emulation is easy as Pi these days... and if you don’t want to give Nintendo your money anyway, what the hell are you complaining about? Goldeneye isn’t going to be on the service even if it cost $5 a year.

Unfortunately, i live in Europe so Nintendo decided i deserve their un-optimised PAL trash.

Crisis potentially averted- you can either set up a foreign account or change the region settings on your Switch to get the NSO library you want for a specific region. You can then play them with your European account if you have a NSO sub. If the same applies for the N64 games, we should be fine.

Charging extra for this is shitty...
but I do give credit for including Sin and Punishment in the launch lineup. The N64's best game.

you know what I find even more annoying, sega once again giving the genesis 6 button in Japan and the 3 button everywhere else, like I'd love to have a pair of 6 buttons genesis pads for fighters/neo geo/arcade classics on the switch, but don't want to pay like 80 dollars a controller it will be after imports and everything.

I was wondering about that 6 button Genesis controller - the pic is in the op of this very thread. Sucks the US is just getting the old 3 button.
You might want to research for something like an 8bitdo M30 controller or something - the switch has tons of compatible controllers.

I've got a fighter command by hori, which is a good controller but wired, would have been nice to have a genesis 6 button layout and pad wirelessly,
but much like 50hz for some inexplicable reason in Europe, 3 button genesis pads persist for no good reason
