Both times Nintendo launched a cross-gen Zelda game alongside their new console (Wii and Switch) they started with strong sales. Switch will be 6 years old in march 2023, and that's probably when they'll release a new console. Here's why:

I'm guessing leakers got confused with Switch 2/Switch Oled and that's why there were rumors for DLSS and an OLED screen on the same device. Nintendo must have been developing both at the same time and they just assumed all the info was about Switch OLED. Since many sources said Nintendo were asking developers to make their games 4K ready and some time ago Nvidia also posted a job listing for someone to work on DLSS for game consoles I believe Switch 2 development must be pretty advanced at this point, thus making it likely to be released in 2023. That's also enough time to see Switch sales plateau and the right time to release a new version.

Okay, now back to Zelda:

I think they will use the same strategy they used with Wii and Switch and release BotW 2 alongside Switch 2.

What do you think?

I'd say no, but shit we said the same fucking thing when the first one was coming out on Wii U...only to then be delayed to be a cross gen game lol

Who knows at this point.

Zelda almost always gets delayed, for years at a time. Unless it comes close to their next console, I don't think they'll delay it for that reason though.

If you consider the impacts of COVID, the continued strong sales of the switch and the third party support it is getting, they are probably comfortable pushing out the release of any new hardware a few years. That's even if they were close to a new console. They average something like 5.5 years per console lifecycle and the switch has only been out for 4.5 years.

Not this time.

Both times this happened, they were coming off a less successful console. And didn't want to shoot their entire load on a system they were trying to put to rest.

Skyward Sword came out only one year before Wii U. When they had a very successful console with a good install base that badly needed software, the second Zelda didn't get delayed, even when new hardware was right around the corner.

So I can't see BOTW2 being delayed for new hardware. They want to double dip on the BOTW hype believe me...easy money. And then make a new one for the next hardware, but probably not a launch game.

For some reason I think they will make sure to have a diamond-studded Mario for their next hardware launch. Mario is beginning to hit critical mass with the movie and theme park stuff going on. The timing is there. Hell the movie could even tease the new game like in The Wizard...that would be pretty brilliant and history repeating itself.

It's crazy to think that Nintendo had such a knockout sales hit with BOTW. And Zelda is still a distant second fiddle to Mario. He's pulling at Mickey Mouse level.

I'm going to say no on this one. Nintendo is going to milk the switch as long as possible so I don't think they will hold back Zelda. I expect that they are going to be in cruise control for 2023 and release their next gen console in 2024. So most likely Zelda will release in either winter of 2022 or early 2023.

Before releasing their new console? Um... yes? Usually a couple years out at least under a codename. Dolphin, Revolution, NX, etc
Are you sure? All I remember is rumours just like the rumours we have now surrounding the "Pro" version. Nintendo would never say anything iirc.

Probably not since they probably aren't doing anything that's going to require them to overhaul or cut huge chunks of the game to make it work on the successor like they had to do Botw.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
They don't always do it. They didn't do it for Skyward Sword
and they should have

Have you not been paying attention? You release a game at a stable 30fps stutter, and then rebrand on the new one without the stutter.

Of course. Ultra 64? Project Cafe? Nintendo told us about all of their consoles long before they released or even before they had official names.

Did you think Nintendo just shadow dropped new consoles out of thin air?

They’re just halfway into the Switch lifecycle but imo they see Switch as the platform. I think we’ll see the Switch DLSS (code named Dane) next November alongside BotW 2.

The next generation Nintendo platform will be something different from Switch but it won’t be until 2025.

I don't know if Switch 2 is coming that soon.
Switch hardware and software continues to have great sales, as long as that doesn't change Nintendo has little incentive to release a successor. Even more so since Switch hardware is probably getting cheaper to produce every year.

No, if they release new hardware? They'll release a new updated 60fps version for it... OBVIOUSLY.
That and another round of remakes of the WiiU era games. Mario Kart 8 super duper edition etc.

Man, I hope not. It's getting close to 5 years and the Switch is really starting to show its age.
Then Dane is for you. 6-8xCPU, 3xGPU, 2x RAM, 4x memory bandwidth over current Switch and DLSS support for 1440p/60fps or 2160p/30fps when docked. Only shit thing is games will still be designed around Switch 2017 specs but there will be some third party Dane exclusives.

I couldn't even imagine a Switch 2 or whatever they call their next Console until 2024.

That being said, hasn't Nintendo been pretty good with announcing certain games with a release date and sticking to it? I say no delay once they announce the release date.

There's a good chance it gets released 2022 and there's also a good chance it gets released 2023

It's likely to be a holiday (mid November) 2022 release. But I can also see it releasing in March or April of 2023

A successor to the Switch...I would guess that's a 2025 kind of deal. With way the Switch and its games are selling there is no need to rush

Nah.

But I also hope not. I don't want to buy more powerful Nintendo hardware when most games won't utilize it anyway.

Only a Xeno game can tempt me on new hardware. I hope we get Xenoblade 3 next year on Switch.

Not shadow dropped, but years of rumours then only months before they announce the console. I don't remember the ones you mentioned. Just the Switch. No one knew what it was until they announced it officially. We were all speculating 2 consoles iirc because of what Iwata said.

They have a steady flow of big releases now so there's no need to. There will definitely be something big they can align with the Switch 2 launch, whether that be 3D Mario or Pokemon or Mario Kart.

Switch 2 doesnt seem to be coming anytime soon, so I doubt they would delay a big title like BOTW 2 just for that.
Aside from potential development issues, no other reason for it to not meet that 2022 window.

Doubt it. BotW2 seems to be aiming for 2022 and nintendo is only weeks away from dropping theie next switch iteration. By the time the switch successor releases, botw2 will likely be a year or two old already

You don't remember all the talk of the "Nintendo NX" before its name was officially revealed as the Switch? It wasn't THAT long ago.

The Nintendo 64 was the Ultra 64. You can still find old Killer Instinct and Cruis'n USA arcade cabinets that list the old Ultra 64 logo after the console was announced and before it was launched.

Dolphin was the GameCube.. Project Revolution was the Wii. Project Cafe was the Wii U.

Pretty good, definitely, but not perfect. Yoshi and Fire Emblem were both delayed out of 2018 into 2019, and then Fire Emblem was delayed again from Spring 2019 to July 2019. Animal Crossing was delayed from 2019 to 2020.

BOTW 2 is "targeting" 2022 now and seems like it's probably a holiday game, so it could definitely slip to 2023.

That said, it does seem like Nintendo really wants it to hit its release window (why announce a year at all, otherwise), so I can't see them delaying it just to align with the launch of new hardware. If it gets delayed, it'll be because the game isn't done yet.

I believe what's gonna happen is a release next February/March along with a special edition Switch bundle to close the Zelda anniversary year.

Nah, doesn’t seem like “Switch 2” will be coming any time soon so I’m thinking they’ll just release it on Switch as planned.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it released in 2023 though. But hopefully they’ll manage 2022.
