Nintendo Developers Reportedly Working on 4K Games for Unannounced System

They need new hardware, not because of the need for prettier games, but for performance purposes. The hardware in the Switch was already pretty underpowered back in 2017.

I don't believe this one bit, to me it just sounds like fanboy dreams and nothing like what I expect from Nintendo.

But regardless of what I believe, all of you who are expecting DLSS support, do you actually think Nintendo would force every developer to add DLSS support to every game, or what? Since support needs to be added on a game to game basis.

Or to patch every previously released Switch game? Or just to a few select first-party games perhaps? I mean, DLSS is super neat and works great in some games but for Nintendo, of all companies, to make an effort and really invest in it?

To me it sounds incredibly far-fetched, or what am I missing?

Just want to hear your thoughts, since everyone seem so convinced this will be their thing.

Bloomberg is full of shit. It's not "fanboy dreams" either, they are deliberately attempting to smear the OLED's launch.

What's most ridiculous is that they actually think they're relevant enough to do any damage.

Prior to the official announcement of the Nintendo Switch OLED, Bloomberg reported that a new Switch model would be released with 4K capability, and a bigger, OLED screen. When the OLED version of the system was announced over the summer, many were surprised that the 4K aspect of that reporting did not pan out. However, a new report published by Bloomberg alleges that several developers affiliated with Nintendo were given dev kits to work on 4K Nintendo games before the OLED reveal. Bloomberg claims that Nintendo pivoted from this plan, possibly as a result of the global chip shortage that has led to struggles across the video game industry.

Bloomberg has apparently identified 11 developers of varying sizes using these dev kits to work on games for Nintendo, despite the fact that there is no compatible Nintendo console. In Bloomberg's reporting, the only developer identified was Zynga, Inc., which is the team currently working on Star Wars: Hunters. Some of these developers apparently expect to release their 4K Nintendo games "during or after the second half of next year." This could mean that another Switch model is currently in development, or the successor to the Nintendo Switch might be released towards the end of 2022, or in early 2023. The Nintendo Switch released in the first quarter of 2017, so that would mean a six-year lifespan for the console, if that were to be the case.

Bloomberg apparently reached out to Nintendo about these reports, but the company called them "inaccurate," without going into further detail. Nintendo has always been notoriously tight-lipped, and has often intimated that it is always working on new hardware. A 4K console from the company is basically an inevitability at this point, but whether or not that was ever the plan for the Switch OLED is impossible to say for certain.
Please Nintendo

So what mobile chip do you propose they should have used instead?
The chip was ok ; they should have customized it more. I.E. 6gb ram with a 96 bit bus, all 4 cpu cores for games at a faster clockspeed. These 2 would have helped substantially. That would mean ram capacity on par wit ps4 (because it used 1gb for os as opposed to 3 for ps4), better graphics esp. in docked mode and less cpu headache for devs.

Alternatively they could wait 6 months and launch with the TX2. But that's a lot of money and time.

I really really doubt 4K. That just seems to totally go against Nintendo's philosophy and not pursuing the most expensive graphics.

Higher res sure, but not all the way to 4K. I'd be shocked.
It will output 4k, doesn't mean all games will be native. Although I could easily see smash being 4k native or mario kart even. Though I would rather see better graphics than native 4k.

The Nintendo Switch already gets a performance boost when you dock it. That means Nintendo understands how to make the two components (the console and the dock) work together. What they really need to do is get external GPU support, and then put a more powerful GPU in new dock that you could purchase separately. You don't need 4k on that tiny screen, so there's no reason for the 4k features to be baked into the console itself. Just let the additional horsepower be handled solely by the new dock. They could release a 4k Switch that would include the console plus the 4k dock for people that don't already own a Switch, and they could also have the 4k dock sold separately to milk more funds out of the people that own a Switch.
In order to use an external gpu you'd need a high bandwidth connection to the dock, like through thunderbolt. I don't think anything like that is possible on the current switch.
Also, even if the switch has a performance boost when it's docked, that's just because of overclocking, it's not comparable to using an external gpu with a supposedly different and more modern architecture.

What time is it?

They still had to balance for battery life which isn't the greatest in the first place.

Sure, but using 6gb ram and a wider bus wouldn't affect that. Also, I'm not sure what the logic was for neutering the cpu in docked mode. The gpu is far faster docked, why not cpu?

4 cores at the same low clockspeed in handheld mode, and maybe 50% faster when docked would be nice.

For docked mode esp., the memory bandwidth just kills performance.

Bloomberg claimed that OLED was going to be 4k before it released.

Obviously they're the ones who are full of shit.
They weren't talking about the OG Switch w/ an OLED screen that's releasing next week, but about the Pro model that at one point was planned for this year & got pushed back, of which the Switch OLED is sort of a replacement.

Nintendo won't force developers to use it, it will be optional. Some third parties will use it and some won't. Likewise for past games, the big, evergreen first party games will be patched but the vast majority of titles will not be.

Those are my expectations anyway.

Exactly, so the results would be a small impact, and there would be almost nothing "4k" about this console then. At least nothing close to what some people here are expecting from a DLSS enabled Switch.

Report me if I continue to console war
I would rather Nintendo chase current gen compatibility then 4k.
They should use DLSS to get current gen games from 540 -720p to 1080-1440p.

It will output at 4K just because everyone has a 4K TV.

I'd expect every first party game released after the model to use DLSS, and a large number of third party games too. May even be a couple of games that run on this model but not that other models.

Resolution isn't something I care about, but I think DLSS will be a great tool for Nintendo for their successor system that will help them get better third party support.

I wish people would quit with dlss. This is Nintendo, not some dream machine you thought up.

People were making up stuff about a switch pro in 2017. Your wishful thinking is not reality.

I wouldn't count on it. Those Nintendo devs really like sharp, unprocessed pixels.

DLSS will be great but it's not free, and comes with some softness due to the temporal stuff. And artificial sharpening. But it will keep getting better over time, who knows how good 3.0 will be.

I mean they definitely have access to Nvidia chips with dlss.

I think it would be foolish if Nintendo doesn't offer dlss. Ray tracing on the other hand is a pipe dream I think, for most titles unless you want low res.

Nintendo will probably drop Nvidia for the Switch 2 and go back to some chip no one ever heard of before like with the 3DS.

In five years, when Switch Pro (or Switch 2 as it will be called by then), people are saying "told you so, I said Switch Pro is coming!"

Many predictions happen eventually.

Microsoft acquire Nintendo confirmed.

That’s great but I think I’m more interested in them chasing 1080p handheld with solid performance. The one thing that’s been a bit frustrating is Nintendo having games on the system that run badly and don’t necessarily look good.

Very carefully worded.
I don't expect it to be called Nintendo Switch.
I think it's more likely to be the SCD/Pro dock concept.

I'll wait to see how or if Zynga denies it, before I get my hopes up.

Finally the Wii U 4K we've all been waiting for

What Bloomberg Intelligence says

“The release of a more premium version of Nintendo’s Switch console with an OLED display and support for 4K graphics for the holiday 2021 selling season could drive the company’s sales above consensus for the fiscal year ending March 2022 and extend the life cycle of the Switch platform for many more years.”

I don't believe that's been their philosophy at all, really. It's, to me, been more of a "do what no one else is doing" philosophy. So, who knows...

If they read the market a certain way (which they sure seem pretty good at), they may go with something high-powered that works along similar lines as the Switch -- handheld/TV-based hybrid.

So Bloomberg doesn't know what they're talking about, or intentionally misleading people.

I can’t believe Bloomberg still has the audacity to report on the 4K Switch after that embarrassing fiasco. They’ve lost all credibility

A 4K console from Nintendo would be a god send. Finally put an end to the horrible aliasing issues that literally plague almost every game they have ever made.

The Switch and Dock aren't really "working together", it supplies power and a video pass-through.

When docked, the Switch unlocks its higher clock mode that requires more power draw.

I highly doubt that they would want to make a dock with a dedicated GPU to improve performance. Nintendo will keep it at one GPU for cost and simplicity's sake.

I think both Switch Pro rumors and a major MS acquisition rumors for this month are the same: bullshit fan wish fake rumors with no facts or credible leakers backing them that only will cause dissapointment between their fans.

I suggest to don't believe this kind of rumors until we get something more or less official.
