[DF] Nintendo Switch OLED Model Review: A Brilliant Display Upgrade - But Is That Enough?

Yep, this has completely sold me on getting one. I was 99.9% sure before, but seeing it in action has sealed the deal. Day one with Metroid Dread.

Really? I haven't researched it much, but I assumed a new dock would have addressed that issue.
It's not a 100% confirmed since nobody seems to be talking about it, gee I wonder why, but the only difference I've heard is that the inside of the dock where you insert the Switch is now glossy.

Still the same drifting joycons?
Hasn't Nintendo solved that? I thought there were new joycons that had a slight change to help prevent that. But maybe I'm misremembering. I just got my joycons back a couple of months ago from Nintendo due to drift issues. At least it's a free fix in the US. But yeah, definitely an issue that I wish Nintendo would address.

They don't really fix the problem from what I've heard.

Oh that's a shame. Even though it's free to fix in the US it's still a huge pain if you mostly play handheld, which I do. I don't have another set of joycons, partly due to the shoddy build quality, so I end up using my pro controller, which isn't ideal.

Maybe Nintendo will fix it with the Switch 2? Yeah right

I just can't believe they are charging more just for a screen upgrade.
it's not "just" a screen upgrade though that's the key feature here. If you're a handheld user it looks to be worth the small premium, especially given how high trade in values can be right now

Sorry, but it's a rip off. It's pretty old tech now and nothing new added to switch, just screen change. Vita had this screen tech in 2012.
If you dock your switch, it's just a more expensive switch.

It’s a shame we didn’t get any massive refreshes but I ordered it anyway. I figure the OLED and tiny QOL upgrades are worth paying the delta from selling my existing switch. This video definitely helped stir up some excitement.

That's why I said if you're a handheld user. If you dock it most of the time obviously this is worthless.
The OLED screen is leagues ahead of the Vita's OLED.
Yes this model is expensive for the raw performance, but again, if you have a switch you can usually find some solid trade in value making the upgrade like less than $100, which isn't that bad of a deal considering the screen improvement, the storage, and the ethernet port. It's a luxury upgrade, and the takeaway is it's really only worth if you are primarily handheld.

Has enormous collection of anime/manga. Cosplays as waifu.
The upgrades reportedly cost Nintendo $10 more per unit. The system will retail for $50 more than the original model. Nintendo gonna Nintendo.

Edit: What about OLED burn-in, drifting Joycons and the dock scratching the screen?

Still can happen as John mention, at least the OLED burn-in.

I was hoping for Nintendo to release a switch revision for $300 and lower the price of the normal one to $250 but of course not... it's Nintendo.

Yea felt like metroid was specifically made for the oled model.

Good video and he has a point here that Nintendo should have looked at.

The switch isn't only a handheld its also used as console, which means the system really doesn't add anything towards people that never use it in handheld mode but as console.

They should have improved performance and resolution for docked solutions.

I’ve got to admit, this looks like a pretty compelling product! I was on the fence before but hats off, seems like a worthy purchase to be fair. I like that they seem to have upped their production values with a more sturdy, premium build.

But yeah, it’s still just too big for a handheld IMO, I don’t really think it works ergonomically. I always get cramp after a short time playing on an OG sized switch.

I much prefer the Lite, crappy LED screen be damned. I have the satisfye grip and its sooooo much more comfortable to hold.

Edit: one of my main issues with the first Switch was the flimsy, wobbly joycon rails, so it bodes well for the eventual Pro model that they’ve got that sorted now.

I hope when the successor rolls round, the do a smaller Lite version along side the main one. A switch Lite with this quality and bezel ratio screen (obviously a little smaller) would be perfection.

Nope. Has no performance increases. No fixes to joycons.

Edited in case of seeming like a drive-by post

Getting mine Friday.

Fucking hyped. Depending how nice the screen looks I may (shockingly) play most of Dread on the SOLED.

Ever since seeing the LG CX I've been absolutely obsessed with OLEDs. You have no idea how good the contrast and black levels are.

I've always been a black level whore, and OLED is the answer to my DREAMS.

Nintendo Switch OLED model review by Taylor Lyles. The Nintendo Switch OLED model does enough right to make this mid-generation refresh worth the $50-$150 premium over the older models, assuming you don't already have a Switch. At the same time, that $50 premium does not make sense for Switch owners who only (or even primarily) intend to play games in docked mode.

I don't think you watched the video.... He compared it to the Vita OLED screen and it was much nicer, better motion, color and less light pollution.

So it seems we will be getting a bit less movement blur, but still pretty obvious doubling of the image. I still can't believe how far we are from CRT clarity. How did we manage to get lost to this point is beyond me...
I mean, to be fair handhelds have always used lcd so this is the best screen in a handheld by far.

I've literally never noticed this once while playing my Switch since launch. I didn't even know it was a thing until this video.

Good to see it's improving on something I'd never even noticed though?

If it was enough for Vita owners to brag for a decade, it’s good enough for Switch users.

I’m not upgrading now. Will see in about a year.
