Bluepoint will be aiming to make GOTY quality titles

Bluepoint Games has said that it’s aiming to make “Game-of-the-Year quality” titles and is actively recruiting for numerous positions – from Combat Designer to Senior Lighting Artists and Graphics Engineers.

As spotted by Twitter user Shinobi602, Bluepoint made its ambition known as an introduction to nearly all of the advertised positions, majority of which mention that the studio is looking for experienced professionals and games industry veterans as opposed to entry-level applicants.

“Bluepoint Games has begun the exciting work of original development and seeks passionate, industry-leading talent to join our pursuit in crafting Game-of-the-Year quality titles,” reads the jobs site. “Our studio is renowned for critically acclaimed titles that exceeded what the world expected of us, from the remaster of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, to the remake of Shadow of the Colossus, and most recently the PS5 launch title Demon’s Souls.”

As we previously reported, although Bluepoint seems to be moving away from remasters and remakes, “original” content could either mean a new entry in an established franchise or a new IP from scratch. As a matter of fact, it could mean both, if the studio is up for simultaneous development.

I would like to see "well playing" games instead of focus of GOTY, or animations or graphics or cinematic experience.

More games like Returnal.

No idea why this obsession with GOTY awards when most games winning them are not much fun to play. Just graphics, atmosphere, characters are not enough for me anymore.

I would once like to hear actors and producers and game developers say "how this art production was a really miserable experience. I hated everyone of my co-workers and I think I was the most talented one of the bunch. And also, we really don't aim too high, like doing anything that resembles high 'art'. We just want to put together something relatively fast people can consume and move on and forget even existing 10 minutes after finishing it. We really don't have any deeper meaning in the story, it's just a rehash of genre clichés."

Probably won't happen but one can wish.

? Not sure why you think the focus on GOTY means no focus on "well playing", I'd argue that is probably why they are seeking veterans.

In order to get a lot of GOTY, you still need a solid playing fucking game man lol

Why did you even see that as some either or? "instead"? Why would they need only 1 focus in 1 area?

Why did you also ignore they are looking for people like Combat Designers? smfh.

If they are aiming for winning GOTY's, chances are they will be doing case study on games like Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2 etc.

A cursory glance on GOTY winners will tell you gameplay is never a priority for them.

Games like Doom Eternal, Dark Souls etc never even get nominated for GOTY awards.

I heard a rumour going about that part of this deal involved transfer of several highly experienced programmers and designers from Sony's other studios to help them with their new unknown IP, most notably, from Naughtydog and that makes me very excited.

I am very much looking forward to seeing what bluepoint are working on. You can tell from watching a few documentaries about them that they take their craft very seriously. I think they will have probably had some ideas of their own for quite a while, they are perfectly poised to fit right in to the Sony ecosystem and really add value in a few different ways, I.e remakes and original IP.

if they recruit well there is no reason they can’t have 2 teams running in tandem constantly.

Ok...but how do you even know? Games like BoTW and Ghost Of Tsushima also won many GOTY that are games with game play bud, even The Last Of Us 2 breaking that record is a 30 hour game, with multiple modes, difficulties etc and hardly something that is to be deemed "Just graphics, atmosphere", if that was the case how come shit like Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, Detroit etc, how come they are not fucking sweeping GOTY or something? How come all those tech demo, walking simulator type games not all out here taking the majority awards?

Shit I don't even agree with Witcher 3 personally winning that award as I felt Fallout 4 and MGSV where the better titles, but I can't disagree that SOMEONE feels it is a game, that was better etc. I'm sorry but shit like Witcher3 (even with me not liking a lot of that game) and Red Dead 2 etc are simply not just "Just graphics, atmosphere", something is still played there bud.

I enjoy games like Doom and Dark Souls too btw, but stop fucking making it sound like NOTHING that is those games can get that fucking award or something ,as if NOTHING is a game if its not Doom or Souls aka neckbeard logic.

Games like Doom Eternal, Dark Souls etc never even get nominated for GOTY awards.

Thats simply false btw...

Doom Eternal was nominated for several.

and Souls series literally won like many, many GOTY never mind simply nominated. Demon Souls, Sekiro, Bloodborne, Dark Souls seires etc all won many awards man....

So this just sounds like it boils down to you being triggered that someone gave GOTY to a game you don't like.....thats it. I see no fucking evdience that the majority of those winners are suddenly now not games or are just graphics and atmosphere etc lol

I believe them but it's a little bit like cheating when you're just remaking games that are already beloved.

No. Sekiro won GOTY in 2019. Doom Eternal got a lot of nominations but didn't win because it wasn't good enough.

RDR 2 and TW3 are universally acclaimed games. They could also study Uncharted 4, TLOU, TLOU 2, God of War: games that actually won GOTY and were huge commercial and critical success. Games with top-notch production value, intriguing stories, and extremely fun gameplay.

Compare game development to Cooking, maybe some developers are looking for GOTY as much as cook looking for Michelin star.

It's some kind of high ambition I suppose?

Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne both received nominations for their respective years. Sekiro won in 2019.

Cinematic 3rd person action adventure confirmed.

I mean they worked on a lot of 3rd person stuff like SoTC, Demon Souls, Uncharted Collection, Metal Gear Solid etc

Plus...I'm sure they don't want their game to fucking be ugly, so I expect a cinematic look, but simply saying those things is pretty broad, that can define a lot of games tbh.

skit_data skit_data True, but that was a packed year. Hades, The Last Of Us 2, Ghost Of Tsushima, FFVII remake, Animal Crossing etc. I love Doom, but I see why many sites picked other titles to receive that award. It was more of the same (which isn't bad btw, I personally love that with certain IP)

Far Cry 3 won a few GOTY, would be like asking for 4, 5 and 6 to win the same award their respective years. Its not saying its bad, its simply saying other titles came out that did either new concepts or just had better stories, presentation etc.

It’s funny that to some people GOTY has become synonymous with ”Cinematic 3rd person”-games when its possible to go back just 1 or 2 years to find not just a nominee but an actual winner that completely falsifies such a notion.

I mean Overwatch won the GOTY 2016 on the Game Awards, I’ll take anything over that shit tbh, what a travesty.

Now if only it were that simpler, Avengers would have won GOTY.

Semi OT, I don't know if we'll ever see a game like that which is actually good. Its like trying to make an X-Men game. That old Sega Genesis game might be one of the best attempts, never mind trying to fucking make 1 super hero, but several with all different powers? ....good luck. I don't know what team can really pull that off.

TWC3 and RDR2 with countless GOTY titles are the prime example that that gameplay doesn't matter at all in those awards, while it should've been the very priority the games are judged upon. But in modern day that's mostly all what gaming is about in journalists eyes, pretty graphics and well made cinematics, if you do those two right you have a very high chance to fell into their grace.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA

I disagree. Otherwise, Hades wouldn't have ended up as GOTY #3 last year (with literally 0 cinematic), overtaking CP2077, AC: Valhalla, Doom Eternal, FFVII Remake. Hades was just behind TLOU 2 and Ghost of Tsushima.

Ori wouldn't have gotten any nominations either, and Celeste wouldn't have got any awards either.

Excellent gameplay, graphics, music but shit story and characters gets you this

It's no hidden secret that barely serviceable gameplay is fine for winning GOTY's.

There are exception within the winners sure, but just the nominees lists (liek the mentioned titles) clearly show what the critics are mostly interested in.

Graphics were great, but "excellent gameplay" is a stretch. The game launched in an extremely buggy state and the gameplay wasn't fun at all. It was very basic -- especially in the beginning. There were also some pacing issues.

Average review scores tend to represent the true state of the game, more often than not, as biased reviews get even out.

Kena is being universally praised, apart from some surprising difficulty mechanics. The game is super polished and looks as well as plays great, hence the high scores.

And again, neither of these two games scored as high as Hades or Celeste -- both of which aren't 3D cinematic experiences. If the game is good, it will be praised and receive the awards and recognition it deserves -- no matter the genre or type.

I disagree completely.

Look...I'm not a massive fan of Witcher 3 (I think that has been obvious for some time lol) but if someone feels in 2015 that is the best game and they factor everything vs just 1 element, I can't argue with that. The award is not simply JUST about gameplay and nothing else, shit if that was the case MGSV should have fucking beat out Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 that year. Yet even with me as a massive MGS fan, someone that feels it not having a much of a story was STILL better then Witcher 3, I'm still able to agree that someone can like Witcher 3 more and give it that GOTY.

So I just don't feel you or I should be even stating what someone else "priority" needs to be to like a fucking game lol I feel it even makes more sense to argue they need to complete the game sure, but to really be out here like this or that MUST be the priority is just too much. So I believe the complete game should be judged as in every single major area, I think that makes the most sense and I simply cannot agree that people are mostly just going for pretty graphics in cinematics because we've seen lots of games that look absolutely fucking amazing that clearly do not go out sweeping those awards, look at the order 1886 look at Ryse how come those games are not sweeping those fucking awards?

So I'm sorry but I just don't see any evidence that simply just doing those two things right that you're going to magically win all the awards because we've seen games that look absolutely phenomenal that clearly have lots of issues in regards to gameplay that did not get those awards

Your argument is basically a tech demo is going to get all the awards or a walking simulator but we haven't really seen anything like that to any massive degree for it ever to really be argued tbh.

As far as I've seen the games that I've won that award in terms of the majority of still been actual games you still actually play.

That includes the Witcher 3... so you could ask anyone on this forum about how I feel about that game to understand I'm not fucking telling you that because I'm some fanboy of the Witcher 3 or anything weird like that I'm telling it to you because the game is still actually a game that is playable and even with me disagreeing with it winning that award I still understand that someone favored that game for what they played more then the other games that released in that year.

That does not mean their only reason was pretty graphics and cinematics, because I'm trying to figure out where the fuck the order 1886 was sweeping those awards lol

Nah, they don't want to talk about that, doesn't fit their narrative. In order for the game to be fun, it MUST be ugly /s.

Gameplay had depth. You could have shotgun builds, machine gun build, energy weapon focus, whatever you want.

And gameplay would completely change depending on your build.

Also it was tight and satisfying. No floaty or imprecise controls.

I would say it was excellent.

This post seems bitter.

Firstly they are different types of game, secondly I've played both and can say Kena plays better than the ascent.

Even the steam reviews for the ascent tell you everything you need to know:

Strange game to cite when it doesn't even do what it sets out to do with any degree of excellence.
