UK Boxed sales | Metroid fastest selling Metroid in UK ever at #3, Alan Wake at #5 | Digital sales continue to shrink physical market

Why the fuck do people rush out and buy fifa every year, only have to wait a few months and the price falls through the floor, you can buy fifa 21 for about a tenner and fifa 20 for a fiver and its hardly any different anyway, no wonder EA make no effort with the franchise, no point.

People buy it anyway.
People want to play FUT early. The earlier you play, the easier it is to get the good cards fairly cheaply.

One thing we know for sure is that Xbox has a higher digital sales ratio than Playstation.

Hence boxed charts mean absolutely nothing. You have 50% of the picture and the other 50% is your imagination.
We don't know that at all.
On the contrary we know that in UK Playstation is leading in digital sales.
A post made by someone on a message board in January 2019 without any numbers to back it up is not a source.
Playstation is reporting 70:30 digital/physical software sales. Microsoft hides stuff.

Okay so if MS is hiding stuff then how do you know they’re losing market share in software sales? How do you know Sony has a higher digital sales VS physical ratio?

You have no MS numbers so what are you comparing?

Yeah I think until Microsoft releases something more definitive, a nearly three year old article is meaningless.

For example if FIFA is mostly digital sales, and the vast majority of sales are on Playstation, then how can it be that Xbox has proportionally significantly higher digital sales - that doesn't make sense.

Ultimately this is likely the GamePass effect. People are playing other games for 'free' and buying less games on Xbox here. Of course Ubisoft have their own counter in the form of Ubisoft+, and sales on other platforms still seem to be strong.

85% of Alan Wake sales for Playstation is indeed much more than i expected. Specially considering it's an IP that was related to Xbox.
I was expecting in line with most multiplatform games: 70% / 30%

Didn't something like that happened with Crash Team Racing Nitro? Difference was that CTR was indeed an exclusive, so this one was more of a first to anybody else other than PS users.

Just because physical sales mean less for Xbox we can't discard to analyse those, since as you said, they still mean a lot for other platforms like Playstation and even more with Switch.

Also, that data you have is from 2019, before the PS5 released. Do we know if the new consoles releasing affected that data?
We know digital sales for Sony platforms have increased a lot when comparing with physical sales in the past few years. Have they increased in a similar way on Xbox?
Do we know if digital sales on Xbox are doing like they were in 2019 when Gamepass didn't have nearly as much people subscribing?

There's a lot of "ifs" to this that need to be updated and analysed.

CTR wasn’t an exclusive though? It released on all platforms

Because all the cards are on the table.
Playstation has a 70:30 digital/physical marketshare, Playstation is leading in overall digital sales, Xbox is losing up to 20% of their physical marketshare.
How Microsoft is supposed to make up for this ground with a higher digital/physical ratio?
70:30 is already a crazy high figure. If Microsoft had a 90:10 digital ratio with overall digital sales still behind Playstation you simply wouldn't see Xbox games doing anywhere 30% of the totals in physical sales as well.
Unfortunately Microsoft hides a lot of things precisely so that conclusive statements and negative narratives can't be formed around them but least in the UK there's a strong evidence that that they're simply losing overall software marketshare.

People just can’t be bothered to get off their ass, go to a store and buy a game I guess (or order physical online). Oh well, just so everyone knows, I’m staying on this sinking physical 🚢 to the bitter end, all the way to the bottom of the 🌊.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
I know a lot of people said that you dont have ownership even you own a physical copy, but i personally thinks that the likelihood of your digital copy not working in the future is higher than a physical copy.

I play fifa 22 alot on xbox one s. From fut alone, we have 1.5m transfer cards at peak, during my login.
keep in mind those cards have 1 hour limit, so you will need to refresh it every 1 hour. This is 150k average players playing on old gen at the same time, who are using the transfer market.
this doesn't include those people who are just playing and not using transfer market, those who are playing SP mode.

You also have to keep in mind the 2:1 ratio, which most people ignore. 30% on xbox is around half of 70% PlayStation (ps5+ps4). in other words, xbox is selling the same as playstation. But the data would favor playstation, because of 2:1 ratio.

Its why its pointless to compare sales.

If both consoles had the same sales ratio, this would have been bad for xbox. because it would mean, they are selling less. Its all because of x1, that xbox doesnt have the same number hardware's as ps4+ps5.

Hope this helps.

This makes me sad. Fuck the all digital future :messenger_crying:
Yeah but MTXs from the likes of Fortnite, Warzone, FIFA etc are vast majority of their, and everyone else’s profits these days. If you buy FIFA for 60/70$, average Joe will spend 10 times as much on MTXs thus making share of actual game buying minuscule.

I like digital, due to not taking the cd out, and putting it back. There is also space problems, Patches, and all other issues.

While digital isnt perfect, I can buy full package of the game for cheap, compared to physical. Its also easy to manage your games.

The benefits outweighs the cons.

How many ps1 physical games can you find now? There alot of digital ps1 games, but not physical games. same for OG xbox. There are OG xbox games, which I would like to play.

The transfer market is cross gen, so you are looking at Xbox one + series s + series x vs about 7.8 million transfers on playstation.
Edit: right now its 6.9 million.

I guess we are different time zone. Mine UK players are sleeping. Around 10pm in eastern time usa, its about 1.5m to 1.2m. What does xbox UK timezone shows?

The ps4 fifa 22 is nice too. Since the fut market is lively there.

I could make alot of coins, just by playing on playstation.

Harry kane on xbox is around 37k to 60k coins.

Guys let's not pull the physical is not relevant card in the UK just because your console of choice has no physical presence in the Uk.

Last I checked it was around 40% boxed and 60% digital.

the playstation should be higher than xbox on 2:1. at 2:1 conversion, it shows the playstation around 15%. it should be 38%.

Depends what you talk about.
What games, what platforms. Unit sales or revenue.
That split varies a lot.

Just the top 20 in the UK:

That's a 61:39 ratio for Q1 21-22. Far away from total domination, especially considering the console sales numbers. Xbox is actually punching above its weight here.

I predicted 3 million for Dread in sales. Looks like I might be one in a loooooooooong line of those that underestimate the Switch's ability to move software.

All digital future, and that includes cashless society, is just another way for corporations and government to control every aspect of your life. Gaming is just another avenue. It seems easier and more practical, but it comes at a great cost.

Pretty sure the disc version of PS5 is vastly outselling the digital version, even when downloads are much higher. People want a choice.
What is the ratio of disc to digital being manufactured? People are buying every PS5 made. Preference for physical is not driving sales yet.

It's impossible to know, but right now the disc PS5 is outselling. Even if people using the disc version are using it to download more games, it can also mean they want that version cause even if out of 5 games they download 4, they still have their favorite games they want on physical.

Sony are producing more disc-based PS5s though.

If ~80% of games are sold digitally in 2021 in the biggest market, then it stands to reason that we will have all-digital consoles five years from now.

I bought Control, as well as Metro Exodus (PS5 edition) as digital titles, but only because they were on sale (£18 and £12) respectively.

I often see Demon's Souls and Spider-Man MM out of stock on Amazon UK. Popular or just fewer physical copies being produced?

FIFA offers the full game 3 days before release if you buy it digitally. For the FUT whales that's a lot of times/advantage in regards to that gamemode. Not surprised to see this

EA knows how to make money. Publishers always prefer digital to physical sales, so EA gives people incentives to buy digital.

Playstation dominating UK. Its gonna be really tough for Xbox to recover any market share as they dont seem to be sending any Series X to the uk to even attempt it.

I still can't get a Series X for the life of me. Managed to land 2 PS5s. For some reason Sony decided to flood Europe with supply.

Does anyone in UK even own a series x because stock is non existent over here. I'm not joking. Microsoft don't send any stock to the UK.

Argos seems to be the best bet since they get stock from time to time, but it's rarely near me.
