[DF] Alan Wake Remaster: PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S Compared to Xbox 360 Original!

The dev.

Platform / Render Resolution / Output Resolution / target frame-rate
PlayStation 4 – 1080p / 1080p / 30fps
PlayStation 4 Pro (Performance Mode) – 1080p / 1080p / 60fps
PlayStation 4 Pro (Quality Mode) – 1296p / 2160p (4K) / 30fps / 4 x MSAA
Xbox One – 900p / 900p/ 30fps
Xbox One X (Performance Mode) – 1080p / 1080p / 60fps
Xbox One X (Quality Mode) – 1440p / 2160p (4K) / 30fps / 4 x MSAA
PlayStation 5 – 1440p / 2160p (4K) / 60fps / 4X MSAA
Xbox Series X – 1440p / 2160p (4K) / 60fps / 4 X MSAA
Xbox Series S – 1080p / 1080p / 60fps
PC – 4K/unlimited

Odd they didnt list MSAA.
I havent seen any shots of the last gen version but it almost certainly still using the underlying renderer and multi sampling is a requirement.
Else they basically rewrote the renderer and it makes no sense to include MSAA in nextgen version when you could use a cheaper reconstruction technique.

Will have to investigate further cuz the Alan Wake renderer relies on Multi sampling for transparencies if this is the same renderer then they would be using some sort of multisampling to achieve transparent effects and the PC port breaks when you force MSAA off.

Hum… everything looks better on the right including the illumination that makes a lot of difference.
Completely disagree… this is borderline SH: HD level remaster (not as bad, but the left side is an overall much more coherent picture… btw, where is the fog? Why is it pushed back?).

Reconstructed, most definitely

Terrible analysis from Tom, imo

Cuscenes arent just 30 fps, but they stutter. A lot. So the framerate seems even lower.

Didnt mention how different some of the textures are, changing the tone of some scenes.

Didnt mention lighting differences where the original sometimes look better than the newer version.
Tom is consistently the worst. They all have a tendency to be soft on developers on some disappointing aspects of games. Things like lazy ports or the thing that is even less forgivable, when devs and publishers lie about resolution or having HDR (ex Hitman 3 hdr is broken; still no fix). They might acknowledge something but they will gloss over it or put a positive spin on it. Tom, I've never seen him criticize anything.

I'm so fed up with the lies over 4k and it's good to see I'm not alone. This needs to stop. It would help if DF actually reemed these companies out once in a while.

Its not very good that Tom never mentioned this, he just said the ps5 sees similar dips.
PS5 drops stays in 5x range… Series X does enter in 4x range.

PS5 have VSync on that means the framrates is way better if it was off.

Mate he says it in the video, nothing more to be said.
So I was right… thanks Mr. DRS 1902p lol… it was obvious btw… now looks how stupid your comment was.

Does not mean anything
If we are going to take this game as a representation of the next gen consoles power then tge seriesS is half the power of the PS5 and XSX because it runs at half the resolution!

I did not say anything about being representative… somebody said the performance is better on Series X when it a false claim and after that he called others stupid lol

After all I can’t change what the game is.

I appreciate Tom mentioning how many liberties the port studio have taken with the art and how it won't be to everyone's tastes. Many things are technically better on paper yes, but the game looks artistically quite a bit worse than the original PC release in 4K.

I thought they said they added in new props? Why are there less plants?

KXlloZ5.png

Old textures are lower res, yet look more varied, 'detailed' and more naturally blend with each other.

M6nQJxe.png

Why is there seemingly less LOD detail in the remaster (look at the small tree branches and rocks)?

v9GWXic.png

Why does the jacket look less detailed, despite having a higher res texture? (seems to be a trend with the textures..)

Why does the old version have much better color balance and brightness?

Where is the fog? It's the Silent Hill HD Collection all over again!

Seriously, what did they do to the lighting?

This analysis was a lot better than Alex's analysis of the Dark Souls Remastered, where Alex made it sound like an objective upgrade across the board... when a deeper analysis revealed it's actually a pretty shit remaster. Reminds me a lot of this one.

It seems most of the time the remasters are worse. :/

Playing on Series S and my experience lines up with what people are saying in this thread. There's no reason this game should have screen tearing and fps drops. Pretty lazy effort overall.

You know you may be right on all your points but beware when you compare games having very different resolution using compressed images. Usually you lose a great deal of details on textures (even cloud effects) on the higher resolution game, while textures details of the lower resolution game will be less lost due to the fact that it was already at a low resolution to begin with.

I personnaly think 60fps is worth all those small downgrades, even if those are all true.

I never got around to playing this on 360 back in the day. Remedy seems to be rolling after Control, but this is a disappointing effort. Not a great way for new players to be introduced to their old work.

I had no idea VRR actually increases a games performance, just that it matches the display refresh rate to the output of the game for a smoother looking on-screen display. Astounding piece of tech that it can actually increase a framerate too. No wonder Riky sings its praises, we should all listen.
If you don't understand how VRR increases a games performance then you don't understand VRR and how framerates and stutter affect performance.

On the topic, seems like a bad remaster TBH. How it's not native 4K is beyond me, it's a game that ran on the 360 and it's barely upgraded. I'll stick to my BC and original PC copies.

I'd rather see a stutter than the screen split in half, but hey that's me.
Most tearing in games these days happens right up the top of the screen, so it's not "split in half". I'd rather the tearing most of the time tbh because the game doesn't slow down. VRR makes it a non issue anyway.

C’mon.

What time is it?
Seems disappointing all around with the resolution and frame rate drops. I guess I'd prefer the harder framerate hits of the PS5 version since I can't stand tearing, but charging $30 for this seems insane.

Isn't it sad that instead of discussing the lost details and actual (problematic) remastered aspects of the game compared to the original, 90% of the post in this topic devolve into "my console has 5 more frames than yours in this certain situation" or some other example from the other team.

What normal person cares about a few fps difference, which MIGHT occur in certain specific situations?! What's wrong with you people. Can't you just stop this pointless bickering? It's incredibly tiresome to keep reading topics filled with these hollow conversations.

I wanted this remaster and the Mass Effect one. Specially the ME one. But damn. They make it so difficult with those poor decisions and half assed productions. If you are going to do a worse job than the original, just you know… just do a simple up-res remaster. We are going to pay anyway. But don’t do shit like this.

Agreed ...these developers are out of their damn minds. Mass Effect is a good remaster aside from the woke bs changes to Miranda's ass.

PS5 does have better frame rates because it never even once goes below 50, while the Series consoles did. You can watch it in the DF video here. (timestamped: from 10:16 to 12:08).

And for screen-tearing, Tom said, "[Series X] you will see drops under 60 at points, and when it does, it invokes full-screen tearing." So the screen-tearing is not just during heavy fights for a second; it is any time the FPS drops from 60 and the fullscreen tearing is there for the entirety of that period.

Anyway, all marginal in the grand scheme of things, and the game and its optimization really could be better on all consoles. In its current form, marginal as it may be, PS5 does perform better: better frame rates and zero screen tearing, so for dual console owners, PS5 seems like the way to go.

48 vs 50 lol. Tearing can be,patched and it doesn't last for long

Watch video and count for how long game stays on 50s on both.

It drops for a second then back to normal instantly. Even on pc you will find such drops occasionally.

I can't stop looking at this thread. I'm so annoyed with Remedy for simultaneously claiming to be passionate about Alan Wake and putting out this crappy remaster.

No, it just eliminates the problems that do exist. While y'all are bitching about the difference between 47 and 50 fps, or screen tearing, people with decent TVs and an Xbox are sitting back wondering wtf you're talking about.

I can't wait until the PS5 gets VRR, because these arguments about a frame drop here or a screen tear here are getting tiresome for those of us who don't play our brand new systems on busted ass televisions, and the PS5 crowd will change their tune on VRR when it's finally available for them.

That's what you get from native 4K vs upscaled 1440p. But yeah, just as I said earlier in other thread, there's no reason at all to play the remaster if you already experienced the game on PC years ago.

Dang, gonna hold out getting this and I love remedy. Looks like a poor port.

Remedy got their money out of me anyway, bought the limited edition book version for Xbox, pc day one, limited edition hard back guide and a hard back art of Alan wake.

this game was really great years ago, but I’ve completed it like 3 times. Might pick this up for cheap in the future.
