My wife loves the farcry series, assassins creed, back 4 blood, anno, spelunky, and yakuza lol. None of these are "marketed at women"

And in this day and age, what type of game would you market at women anyway?

You realize there are patterns of behavior that exist outside your house, right ?

The Sims. There's an example of a game you'd market to women.

Creating specific games for "women" isnt the way to go. Marvel movies appeal to everyone in the same way a great game does. But for generations we sold video games as a "boy" thing. I even remember far more woman playing video games than we thought. Keep making games and let the people whose job is to sell them to let woman know they are for everyone. Because making shopping games isn't the way to appeal to them. They want good stories just like anyone else.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Most developers make games for themselves, and people like them.

We need more female developers at the top, directing and producing. It's even better than trying to cater to your wife or girlfriend. Just let people like them steer the ship sometimes.

Of course, but you don't have to be emo or a lesbian to like that game series. Plus.....it's a game "designed" to be liked by more women compared to your average console game that'll make the E3 show stage.
I never said you had to be. But I find it strangely patterned that every "female (narrative) game experience" as of late are homoerotic in nature. I mean, I loved female bicurious experimentation when I was in HS and college like the next guy, but those only seem to be the female targeted narrative adventures lately.

Lots of women like the Sims, because they could be a traditional homebody too. Basically a virtual doll house and tea time.

Edit: To add, my female friends that are gamers love the shit out of Tomb Raider and TLoU. Even as violent as they are because of the female character and narrative driven.

I like life sims too.
Tomorrow Children tried but didn’t find an audience. Tokyo Jungle kind of fits the mold as well but again no sequel.

They don't design for women explicitly because apparently acknowledging men and women gravitate towards different interests is now fascist or some shit.

To be honest I like how the games are now and how the industry is. I also don’t see female gamers having any problems with the games as they are. My ex gf was playing Call of duty, Battlefield and Diablo type of games.

The bolded is 100% correct! And it's not just your female friends. Wanna know how I know?......

Sony had this just a few months ago.
Console ownership among females has increased dramatically since the PS1 days, significantly expanding the audience of Sony’s gaming brand. As part of a presentation to investors, the Japanese giant noted that approximately 41 per cent of PlayStation 5 and PS4 owners are women. Compare this to just 18 per cent on PS1, and clearly the demographic for consoles is growing.

Exceptions confirm the rule.

Nah. That game isn't the exception. What makes you think women would want to play the latest Ratchet and Clank game on the PS5?

Most girls I know that play games are into RPGs, Horror games, Puzzles, Gacha games, survival, sim games like Sims or Animal Crossing etc.

They are just as complex with their tastes in gaming just as much as guys are.

Don't underestimate nerdy girls ability to pop out a excel spreadsheet for gacha games especially in under a day. They have it down to a science.
Of course, there are millions of girls who play all sorts of stuff just like everyone else, I'm talking about the casual mass-market audience. You have the hardcore crowd, which is millions of guys and girls who play everything, but then you have the casual side of things, you know, FIFA, Madden, Battlefield, Call of Duty, all that stuff. The casual guy audience is covered, but when you look at the female side of things, the casual female audience is oddly forgotten about.

As mentioned, it's usually The Sims or some mobile game that's popular among casual "gamer girls", but what's funny, is that it's not just a little popular, it's a fucking massive market. There is a huge casual female audience sitting right there, waiting for triple-A games. And when they come along, like The Sims or Animal Crossing, the games blow up like crazy.

You would think that triple-A studios would want to cash in on this, that they analyzed the market and what girls go after and designed games to suit everyone not just the casual guy market, but no. I don't know why this is. I don't know if it's because there are too few women making decisions, or what a hell it is, but it feels like there is a huge viable market just sitting there.

This is ONE of the DUMBEST things any person has EVERY said. Jordan Peterson is a hack!!! You don't need to dominate in aggressiveness and assertiveness in order to be a designer or a director. Only sexists, bigots, and the ignorant would think something like that.
Fine with me. Let's hear your counter argument.

chicken and egg situation maybe. But I think having more female protagonist in traditional console genres is a good start. But my next question, what kind of game targets this demo directly? Less violence?
Shit seems all of the games I've played recently have been a female protagonist, but they'd be no different with a male instead. More women are attracted to casual gameplay than men. It's just how it is. That's why there are so many playing mobile games compared to console and pc.

Just look at the success of stuff like Fifty Shades of Gray and Twilight.

Women love powerful, dominant men and kinky sex. Put more of that shit in video games and women will buy it up.

For shame… are you trying to suggest that women like fucking and killing as much as men do?

Because in this puritanical society, women only enjoy soft pretty things. Stardew Valley. That type of shit.

The real misogyny going on in gaming is the concept that women don’t want sex and violence. Of course they fucking do. They just want a different version of it from men.

If devs would spend more time asking what women want, they might get better answers. And women would get better games.

But then in the video games industry, the only women really given any agency or power are… you know.… Not Dave Chappelle fans.

Bragr Bragr I think the AAA market does try to make games that suits everyone. Meaning there aren't games tailored specifically for Women anymore. When I was younger there were plenty of Barbie themed games, games revolving around taking care of pets. Games that were heavily puzzle based or even some rather cute games. But now due to wanting to make everything inclusive that demographic audience has been sucked into a vacuum with the same games the male audience tends to gravitate towards. Because nowadays games have no soul and are primarily made to make money.

Games based around fashion and the more feminine qualities typically don't sell. And the only way they do is through the mobile platform via MTX. It's been years since I've seen a Barbie game in the last few years being released on PC or anything really.

And most puzzle games that hold their attention are on mobile and are very pick up and play with daily tasks that take minutes to complete instead of hours.

Another avenue you can consider is MMOs since for some it's not about the game itself but the interaction with new people that they enjoy. And quite a few really love the housing aspects and decorating everything inside and outside. It's a big thing for them and they can look pretty phenomenal too.

I also think boys and girls have different interests when playing exactly same game.

It's really about how they appease the each audience well enough - but for fast paced fps type games or sports games - it's quite difficult to really weave everything together though.

I guess I don't understand why this needs to be a push. If women don't like a specific game or system, is that an issue? Maybe for shareholders.

As stated, women play a ton of mobile games.

It doesn't need a push, I'm not advocating for that, I'm saying that I don't understand why this is such a neglected market.

Virtually no big triple-A developer is working on such games. Why? there is huge money in it, you would think the corporate greedy side of the industry would leap on it.

Imagine if Naughty Dog made an Animal Crossing-like game with mind-blowing graphics where you could build a village online with your friends and farm realistic-looking fields or whatever, or if Blizzard made a game about someone who runs a day-care center for dogs where you could customize the entire day-care. Or if Sucker Punch spent 3 years developing a game about running a restaurant and decorate your apartment.

I know that sounds weird and most here wouldn't want that, but all the millions of women who sit and play shitty mobile games would flip out and jump on this in 2 seconds. It's strange that absolutely no triple-A developer has gone after this. Almost every game catered to girls are low-effort horse games or some mobile game, imagine what a triple-A developer could do. Money dictates that this should have happened at this point, especially with massive successes like The Sims, Minecraft, and Animal Crossing. It's fertile fields and no one seems to give a shit.

Making family games would be start.

Scroll through the games on the Xbox Game Pass for example. It's a teenage boys wet dream. Pew pew!

The Sims has been terrible for quite a while now and no publisher wants to make something similar despite how successful it would be (fans are paying random people to make a game called Paralives, just to have an alternative). Animal Crossing comes every decade or whatever and sells crazy amounts and publishers are still not copying it despite probably being a cheap game to make.

I don't get it. It's like publishers only want to copy the 3 or 4 most successful games and ignore everything else, regardless of how many clones those games already have.

Perhaps women just like "shitty mobile games"?

My friends wife likes TLOU and Tomb Raider. Those are the only games I know she plays. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Women tend to be less "specialized" than men. That includes music, movies, television, video games, etc.

My counter argument is.....

- A Director can have many styles. There's no one style fits all approach here.

- Directors and other executives don't have to have a aggressive personality. That's generational propaganda leading you and others to think that.

- What's the definition of fear? (Fear: an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger). It's fear that leads people to say traits that are associated with men, "JUST SO HAPPEN" to be the best traits for the jobs that pay the most money. Many men don't want to lose their access to those level jobs by competing with women in the workforce.

- In the 1940s (Pre-WWII) almost all women stayed home and didn't work in corporate America. WW2 was the beginning of that change. There were MANY things men said about women that was 100% wrong back then too. What Jordan Peterson said there is the 21st Century version of being wrong about the workplace. In 50 years, we'll look back at that Jordan Peterson quote the same way we look at the images below.

Why? I'm not saying he is the oracle, but wanna read some counter arguments.

Jordan Peterson is a pseudo-scientist that takes or isolates studies or set or data which are either misinterpret or over-interpreted with no substantiation, in fact often resorting to naturalistic, symbolic or deterministic (therefor pseudo-scientifically) arguments where the science either doesn't have an answer, or has one that doesn't fit is agenda, which is merely an reactionary one.

WHY ARE YOU TALKING LIKE THIS!? What makes you think most women only want to do those things? Just stop it man. Again I'll post this article and information directly from Sony.

So when you see that 41% of all PS4 and PS5 owners are women, do you think they don't play the games that are in the image?

Jordan Petersen is a writer and a lecturer and his assumptions about corporate culture show how little time he's spent navigating one (his defensive attitude when criticised shows he'd last about five seconds in that kind of environment too). I've seen people bound up the corporate ladder, not by 'piss-marking' (the way he likes to do in debates, incidentally) but by making or saving a lot of money for the company - it's why most CEOs are former finance guys. The boys club Wolf-of-Wall-Street culture of yesteryear is long gone - modern corporates spend most of their time running emotional intelligence seminars and mental health awareness weeks, that goes doubly and perhaps even trebly in creative media industries like gaming.
