THE BEATLES: GET BACK - A DISNEY+ ORIGINAL

The footage is amazing, but this is not my favorite era of Beatle music. I prefer the stuff they did earlier like "I wanna hold you hand" and the like.

I love the Beatles Anthology set, but the highest resolution you can get it is 480. I’m looking forward to this and hopefully it runs in 4K HDR.

Their Get Back era is fantastic in that it's a great documented case of "here's film footage of a band completely falling apart."

I like their material from this time but the material for this album was sandwiched between the much better White Album and Abbey Road. (For a weird reason I don't count "Yellow Submarine" as a proper album.) Those albums just have much stronger material than what eventually resulted in the Let It Be album.

I'd take Get Back over the White Album. Not sure why, but the White Album never did it for me. I'm not a big fan of double-LPs so maybe that's it? Abbey Road is easily my favorite of theirs.

I still say The Ring was inspired by Yoko.
The movie? :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Wow, this is cool. I've pretty much become comfortable with Disney+ being my monthly "The Simpsons bill", as long as there are a couple MCU projects on the horizon. Stuff like this feels like an awesome bonus, for me.

I feel you, I was initially not a big fan of the White Album. Took me a while, but now it's one of my favorite albums of theirs. It's really brilliant.

Make no mistake, I do really like Let It Be. I know McCartney has a lot of beef with the Specter "wall of sound" treatment it got, but I don't mind it. There are awesome individual tracks on the album -- Let It Be is awesome, and this version is better than the single version since it has that guitar break in the middle; and Get Back is great, although it doesn't have the "outro" from the single version. All the banter (especially the Lennon stuff) in between tracks is great, too.

I'm a huge Beatles fan and this documentary probably won't tell me anything I don't already know. I'm still gonna watch it Day 1 though.

How in the fuck did this get forgotten somewhere and wasn't released for half a century? WHAT THE HELL?
The footage was shot for the Let It Be documentary, which was released in 1970. Some of the outtakes were bootlegged over the years. A lot of it is boring footage of the Beatles running through old 50's standards for a few seconds before playing something else, or jamming -- badly -- for what feels like an eternity. So it's not all gold, far from it.

It was never forgotten, but the Let It Be movie was always thought of as sort of boring, plus it showed the band not getting along so the solo Beatles were not overly keen on releasing it again or doing anything new with it.

Apparently, they didn't like what was done with the footage for the Let It Be film, which showed some of the tension during that period, and had blocked it being re-released on DVD.

I've seen this being framed as "see? They didn't hate each other during this time!" because it apparently shows them being on more friendly terms than the Let It Be Film did. And it seems like this is being positioned to counter that public perception of tensions within the band during that period, which the Let It Be film helped perpetuate. If you own the footage then you can dictate how it's used. Kinda like how The Last Dance is clearly Michael Jordan telling us how he wants us to view his career.

I'm still looking forward to seeing it but as with any documentary it's good to consider the perspective it's coming from.

Yup, this is all very much on point.

Even as a huge Beatles fan -- and I do think they're the greatest pop rock band of all time, it's not even close -- I acknowledge that it's very much of a "greater than the sum of its parts" situation.

Get Back is fantastic in that it shows both their greatness but also a shit ton of their shortcomings:
- As K Kreen101 said, they were not a jamming band. They sucked in that regard. Partially because...
- .... they were not the greatest instrumentalists. None of them were anywhere close to virtuosic on their instruments. One possible exception was Paul being a FANTASTIC bass player.
- John and Paul had fantastic songwriting ability. But it was raw, and George Martin did an exceptional job shaping their songwriting into something that could be put on a record. Martin is not involved in Get Back -- and it definitely shows.
- They were not a great live band. They might have had some decent concerts during their Beatlemania years, but becoming a studio band during their prime output shows. They're not terrible, but they're far from, say, The Who, who I consider to be *the* standard/god-tier of live rock and roll acts.

That was brilliant, cheers for posting it. Will have to pay more attention to the release.

It's absolutely crazy how immortal and influential their music is to this day.

Nothing more fun than asking someone who lists The Beatles a terrible band, to point out a few songs and ask why? They get completely flustered and can't answer why. Don't need to be a musician to answer a critique about music, or a film maker to criticize a film.

I was hoping there was a free trial for this but there is not. Oh well, it'll be worth $8 to see the entire thing. Just et an edible, see you on the other side of episode 1.

Never recalled a bad Beatles song, it's absolutely an amazing bad, there're a bit soft minded and I can only tolerate a few Beatle songs in a row.

I'm sure that perception had a lot to do with the commercial failure of this.

I’m passed I never got to play it.
If I was rich, I would buy the bundle now.

Honestly, my parents are huge Beatles fans (my mom was literally in the fan club in school).

I think they were bored.
My mom also said “this seems sad” before the end of Part 1.
As for me, otoh, coming from someone who’s been in a band before but someone who’s not a huge Beatles fan, I thought it was damn interesting to watch.

About halfway through the second part, and this is mesmerizing. The video and audio quality is superb. I'm borderline hypnotized, feeling like I'm sitting in on the music making process of the greatest band to ever grace our planet. It's chill-inducing throughout if you have any sort of appreciation for The Beatles. Not even Yoko could ruin this, though she certainly tries.

I'm particularly blown away by how Billy Preston just popped in for a visit and ended up just laying down those iconic electric piano licks on Get Back and Don't Let Me Down on the spot.

Yep, just got to the part where Preston stops in. Was watching no the treadmill. I am torn finishing it on the couch, but I really loved watching while on my treadmill since I was 100% focused on the program and not my sweat.

The 'White' album has more than it's fair share of duds, it's like a B-Sides album. Still love it though.

Paul McCartney, "Why don't we do it in the road". Sounds like he made it up on the spot, still like it but only to laugh at considering it's him. I still wonder if any of his children were conceived that way. Knowing him, his own private road.

Halfway through episode 3 and I’m certain this is a masterpiece. Their creativity is unparalleled.
I will probably rewatch this entire thing 10 times over the next month. There is so much going on, it requires multiple viewings.
